December 27, 201213 yr Beatles created rock as we know it. Who took us to new places. Led took us on Trips. Stones made it fun. That covers 99% of the discussion. I'd like to throw out Queen who had 4 guys that could play a new fangled rock. And Pink Floyd who I still can't figure out what the heck they did--but it was awful entertaining.

December 27, 201213 yr The best definition of rock and roll that I can come up with would be the music derived from the amalgamation and electrification of the American blues, jazz, jump, gospel, and country musical styles. You could assign a small handful of names to those who did it "first" (Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, Big Boy Crudup, Jimmy Preston), but the first band to make a run of hits performing the style I described above would be The Rolling Stones, whose first album was released in 1964. The Beatles had already released their first album the year prior, but if you look at the songs on The Stones' self-titled debut included next to The Beatles' Please Please Me, it's pretty clear that The Stones were much better working the musical influences of rock and roll than The Beatles were at the time. Led Zeppelin is great and all...no doubt...but they didn't get an album out until 1969, at which point bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Kingsmen, and The Who had been working on perfecting the rock and roll form for a half a decade. Led Zeppelin built (very well) on a form that already existed.
