The health of Kentucky high school football

Featured Replies

Classes are not the problem. Goes much deeper. Leveling the playing field so teams competing are apples to apples is THE issue. I rest my case.

You have just repeated exactely what I have preached in numerous posts on this site about this very subject. It is what i've said all along and got bashed over by others saying i was saying some chools cheated when I never said that at all. Schools follow rules while at the same time other schools may have stricter rules they follow etc. It's not "cheating" it's simply a different set of rules their school districts set.

I won't bring up other instances because it will be followed by the usual posts of "prove it" or "report it" so we won't get into that stuff. But I agree with what you said and it is the same thing i've said all along.

I rest my case.

The only way you will ever level the playing field is having every school confide to the exact same rules in each and every district across the state. That would mean they follow the same criteria that the public countyu schools follow. So not to get into an argument with those that will say i'm saying the trinity's of the world don't follow the rules, i'm not saying that at all, but I am saying that the rules the use might be a little less stringent than say Boone Copunty school district chooses to follow.

You're exactly correct, but it starts with the local districts. Not the state or the KHSAA. The district has to be willing to change before anything would be done. Each district makes the rules based on ALL their schools and ALL their sports. The people running these districts are not dumb and I'm sure they have good reasons for why they govern their districts the way they do...and the reasons may have nothing to do with football! Which I bet is the case. Schools are there for education first and foremost. It may work for some districts and not others. But it's up to educated andministrators to make those decisions.

I posted this in another thread and thought it was also appropriate for this one...Health of KY football not as bad as some may think.

1A Mayfield...won 2 of last 3 but Hazard proved last year that they can be beat.

2A NCC...top of the pile but close semi-state and finals show others are capable

3A Central...5 teams played them to within 6 points in the playoffs this year

4A Highlands...Lock no real discussion of challenger is possible

5A Bowling Green...Hook and Lateral away from not making finals...can be challenged

6A Trinity...Scott Co and X both had a chance to knock them off this year

Even though the same great programs that seem to always win, won again this year there is an opportunity for others to step up. But to quote a great man, "To be the man you gotta beat the man" and these 6 are "The Man" until others knock them off.

All classes except 1A and 4A could have had a different champion this year with just one or two plays going another way. Champions find a way to win those games...others gotta step up and take it from them.

After sitting thru 4 State Championship games this weekend, it became very clear why some teams are continuously successful and why others are a step or two behind the pack. It has nothing to do with classes and everything to do with coaching and the mindset of the players.

AMEN! And adding one more thing would be parent or community support.

I disagree. Lets take Cooper for example...Cooper was an excellent football team. If six classes didn't exist, would they have had a legitimate opportunity to play for a state championship? Coaching and mindset of players escalated their program to the high level. But this fortunate seeding in the 5A tournament allowed them to play for the championship. In two years, Cooper will most likely jump back up to 6A and that shot will decrease drastically. Too many bad schools make the playoffs and I am sorry, but I do not think it is in the best interest of KHSAA to continue the six class format. The question was asked before, will this fix the dominant teams? That question is obviously unanswerable at the moment but it does likely increase the competition at each class, with the exception of 6A.

Coaching has a lot to do with it, but there are also other things that also play into it aalso. Yes some things that for some reason people are afraid to talk about on here.

With that said, what I believe should happen is for everyone to stop talking about "ways to make it more competitive" because it will never happen and I will tell you why.

If every school district, whether it be a public or independent school district set the rules and were followed to a tee across the state such as zero enrollment to anyone that lives outside the district for example, that wouldn't stop people from doing what they do now, and if anyone says it doesn't happen they are either full of crap or as naive as possible, and that is use a relative or friends address that actually lives in a certain school district. ettc. There will always be schools that turn a blind eye to things that go on just so they may have certain athletes attend their schools.

Another reason it will never happen is because the rule could still be bent by private schools. Private schools which get tehir funding from tuition has to go outside the actual scchool district to bring in students etc. so they can survive and guess what wold happen if public and independendt schools actually did all follow new rules to a tee.....the private schools such as CCH etc. would then get all the top athletes because they could actually recruit them etc. openely.

So noting can actually be done to ever make it a level playing field. So enjopy the high school sports as it is and if you can't then just choose another hobby lol

The average combined score of each of the 6 championship games was 39.8 to 11.2. I would wonder how this compares to other states.

My belief is that the health and stability of football in KY are linked. Kentucky football classification is unstable because of the 6 class system. There are too many borders and no defined boundaries. The 2 year average of boys for the school year 2011/2012 at a few select schools show the following:

2A Bishop Brossart = 168 Boys

1A Beechwood = 190 Boys

1A Mayfield = 207.5 Boys

3A Central = 400 Boys

4A LexCath = 402.5 Boys

3A Bell County = 410.5 Boys

4A Holmes = 427

3A Bourbon County = 439 Boys

5A Franklin County = 505.5

5A Shelby County = 509 Boys

4A Johnson Central = 519 Boys

There are many, many more examples of this throughout the alignment. When we were in a 4 Class system, I am sure these existed, but not to the extent it is now. It is much easier to win a 5A title then a 4A title, but Johnson Central, who by enrollment numbers belongs in 5A is stuck in 4A. Brossart is in 2A while the Beechwood and Mayfield are in a 1A classification. The current numbers show LexCath should be 3A and Bourbon County should be 4A.

There needs to be defined boundaries and it needs to be aligned with the most current year numbers, every 2 years. When the last re-classification happened for the 2011 season, the KHSAA used enrollment numbers from 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 rather than the then current 2010/2011 school year. Right now, teams are basically going to play the 2013 and 2014 seasons with enrollment numbers as old as the 2008/2009 school year. Bourbon County was lucky enough to have low numbers 4 years ago and unfortunately for LexCath, they had high numbers. Both teams are out of class based upon the most current numbers. The current system is very flawed.

^ - One persons flaw is another persons agenda.

I am not one pleading for the little guy but to balance the system. More competition can be produced for the likes of Highlands and Mayfield. Trinity is on a different level and have been for quite some time. But we can't create a system to satisfy these few schools, it must be good for the state as a whole.

People don't want what is good for the state as a whole. They want what is good for them and their entertainment.

Again, who cares about other states?

Why would a school "look the other way" on transfers or new students? Wouldn't they be losing tuition money? I know the school that I root for does random administrative checks to make sure everything is legit. You must stay at that residence a minimum of 3 nights a week and you must show residency bills in the guardians name, etc. in fact i bet the sucessful programs are even buttoned up more than you think. They have to be because when you're on top, everyone is looking to take tou down anyway they can. So you better have your ducks in a row! It's not like these successful programs school administrators are focused on football only. If that was the case, they wouldn't be so successful in the classroom. And I bet EVERY school has kids in their system where they have used a relative's address to go there. Maybe not all for football, but for whatever reason. But you are right, nothing will happen.

Coaching has a lot to do with it, but there are also other things that also play into it aalso. Yes some things that for some reason people are afraid to talk about on here.

Why does everyone concern themselves with the private schools so much. I'd I'm counting correctly, 2 of the 12 team that played in the finals were private. If you even go back a week, I think that only adds one more private school and a lot of other public schools.

So when the term "private school" comes up, are you really just talking about Trinity???

People don't want what is good for the state as a whole. They want what is good for them and their entertainment.

I agree that is correct with 98% of the people. I do think there are some that would really like to see the competitiveness get better. Maybe that's for the entertainment factor, but I do think some that live near borders of other states would like to get a little more repect for the state!
