The health of Kentucky high school football

Featured Replies

Why would a school "look the other way" on transfers or new students? Wouldn't they be losing tuition money? I know the school that I root for does random administrative checks to make sure everything is legit. You must stay at that residence a minimum of 3 nights a week and you must show residency bills in the guardians name, etc. in fact i bet the sucessful programs are even buttoned up more than you think. They have to be because when you're on top, everyone is looking to take tou down anyway they can. So you better have your ducks in a row! It's not like these successful programs school administrators are focused on football only. If that was the case, they wouldn't be so successful in the classroom. And I bet EVERY school has kids in their system where they have used a relative's address to go there. Maybe not all for football, but for whatever reason. But you are right, nothing will happen.

Now you've let the cat out of the bag...All this time I could've been using a fake address? And no one told me about this?:ohbrother:

Not where your kids go to school...they'd catch ya!!! :)

And that's why we do the right thing.. Pay tuition. It's the 3, 4, and yes, even 5 round trips per DAY during football season that are killers. But, we wouldn't have it any other way. When you consider the alternative... I hate to think about it..

I agree that is correct with 98% of the people. I do think there are some that would really like to see the competitiveness get better. Maybe that's for the entertainment factor, but I do think some that live near borders of other states would like to get a little more repect for the state!

I hear you. At the end of the day respect from other states means very little. If they don't respect us now they never will and it wouldn't matter what we do.

I disagree. Lets take Cooper for example...Cooper was an excellent football team. If six classes didn't exist, would they have had a legitimate opportunity to play for a state championship? Coaching and mindset of players escalated their program to the high level. But this fortunate seeding in the 5A tournament allowed them to play for the championship. In two years, Cooper will most likely jump back up to 6A and that shot will decrease drastically. Too many bad schools make the playoffs and I am sorry, but I do not think it is in the best interest of KHSAA to continue the six class format. The question was asked before, will this fix the dominant teams? That question is obviously unanswerable at the moment but it does likely increase the competition at each class, with the exception of 6A.

Explain why it was against the best interest of the KHSAA that the Cooper players and coaches got the opportunity to play in a state game? Same with Caldwell County, Fairview, PRP and Collins? Frankly, I think it was great for high school football in those communities that their teams made it to the state championships. Caldwell hadn't made it there in quite some time, and I don't believe the other schools mentioned had ever been there before. I have to think playing in the state championship game did nothing but help build enthusiasm and support for the game of football in those schools. How will reducing the number of classes and decreasing the number of schools making it to the championship game be in the best interest of the KHSAA?

My belief is that the health and stability of football in KY are linked. Kentucky football classification is unstable because of the 6 class system. There are too many borders and no defined boundaries. The 2 year average of boys for the school year 2011/2012 at a few select schools show the following:

2A Bishop Brossart = 168 Boys

1A Beechwood = 190 Boys

1A Mayfield = 207.5 Boys

3A Central = 400 Boys

4A LexCath = 402.5 Boys

3A Bell County = 410.5 Boys

4A Holmes = 427

3A Bourbon County = 439 Boys

5A Franklin County = 505.5

5A Shelby County = 509 Boys

4A Johnson Central = 519 Boys

There are many, many more examples of this throughout the alignment. When we were in a 4 Class system, I am sure these existed, but not to the extent it is now. It is much easier to win a 5A title then a 4A title, but Johnson Central, who by enrollment numbers belongs in 5A is stuck in 4A. Brossart is in 2A while the Beechwood and Mayfield are in a 1A classification. The current numbers show LexCath should be 3A and Bourbon County should be 4A.

There needs to be defined boundaries and it needs to be aligned with the most current year numbers, every 2 years. When the last re-classification happened for the 2011 season, the KHSAA used enrollment numbers from 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 rather than the then current 2010/2011 school year. Right now, teams are basically going to play the 2013 and 2014 seasons with enrollment numbers as old as the 2008/2009 school year. Bourbon County was lucky enough to have low numbers 4 years ago and unfortunately for LexCath, they had high numbers. Both teams are out of class based upon the most current numbers. The current system is very flawed.

Seems to me like your issue should be with the KHSAA resetting the classes every 4 years. When they last did it, the schools were placed in their correct classes based on the enrollment figures available from KDE at that time. Since then some schools have shrunk; some have gotten bigger. Some would argue that perhaps we should re-classify every 2 years instead of 4. There may be other reasons to not do so, but as someone that was involved in the process twice, it is an immense amount of work when re-classification is done.

I don't think people understand just how much work and detail has to be done to classify football in this state. I wish more people could have heard Julian Tackett's interview Friday night. Regarding the KHSAA and how they handle football classification I am behind them 100%.

I did hear most of it and he did have some great points. But others I would challenge him on. I can't remember everything or what my arguments were when he was talking, but I wasn't buying EVERYTHING he said.

Can we get a hold of that anywhere and post the audio somehow?? I think it would be great for everyone to hear and make for a great debate on here.

I think your thinking is flawed by possibly your aggravation where your school is.

To say it's much easier to win a title in 5A than it is in 4A sounds pretty silly.

Johnson Central which I take it is your team, I don't think is better than a lot of schools in 5A. Just in the state rankings Johnson Central is ranked 40th. You want to take a guess at how many 5A teams are ranked higher? Maybe you are upset because you are in a class with Highlands. Try being in a class with Bowling Green and John Hardin along with several others. The top ten in the state are made up of 3 5A schools, Bowling Green, Cooper and John Hardin, doesn't sound like an easy class to me.

Just call Johnson Central's situation what it is - being stuck in a class with Highlands. They'll tailor any argument they can for getting the heck away from them. When they were both in 5A they petitioned to play down. Now 5A is their "natural" location.

Probably true, but I look at 5A and I don't see Johnson Central being any more successful with Bowling Green and John Hardin or Cooper or Conner or Franklin Co. or Harlan C. etc.

If they are tired of being Highlands punching bag, I don't think they could handle the other teams in 5A any better.

You are kidding, right? Rankings are meaningless.

Let's see who from each class has won championships on the field in the past 10 years regardless of classification.

4A = Highlands, CovCath, Boyle County, Lexington Catholic

5A = Bowling Green

And, I am in no way, shape, or form connected to any of the schools listed in the examples. Especially, Johnson Central.

You are correct that 2 years would be better. If we are doing what is best for kids, the amount of work should be irrelevant. The state used 2 year averages including numbers from the 2008/2009 school year for the last 2011 - 2014 reclassification. The senior kids that played football this year were in 8th grade during the 2008/2009 school year. That means that the 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons had and will have ZERO kids playing football that were actually counted during the last full reclassification.

This is a much bigger problem in 6 classes than 4 classes. With 6 classes, you have 5 dividing lines and school growth or shrinkage means a lot more teams are affected. I would say as many a 8 schools in 1A and 6A could be out of class and as many as 16 schools in each class of 2A through 5A. When you are talking about between 32 -40 schools per class, this is a very big deal.

Sorry, but you post actually makes it look easier in 4A, you show 4 different schools winning in 4a and only 1 in 5A, so what is your point?

I will put this in terms of Cooper. If Cooper were in 4A they would have had to beat Highlands and/or CovCath and LexCath and/or Boyle County just to make it to the Finals. All of which have won titles in the past 10 years.

In 5A, only Bowling Green has won a state title in the past 10 years.

Which path looks harder to you?
