Same exact thing was said about Max Nussbaum his Freshman year. Doesn't play baseball anymore and plays basketball, but wouldn't say he is a star in the region.

 

I am pretty sure Max DOES run track .... and has been All State in multiple events ... in the past two years.

Not to mention a regional champion in the 100, 4 x 100, 4 x 200, etc ....

Pretty sure he is one of the better track and field athletes in NKY.

Absolutely a great season and a team that came a long way after graduating 20+ seniors including almost every starter. An excellent coaching job with many adjustments having to be made almost on a weekly basis.

 

As to the sick baby, when you have been treating the baby for 4 years and it isn't getting better, your treatment isn't working and you need to try a different treatment.

My point is he will not be focusing on football year round nor should he. I think if kids want to play all three sports they should and not be pressured into focusing on one sport. That's the beauty of Beechwood. Kids can play all three and still focus on the most important thing too...being a kid.

Or any other 1A school, Guhy is a muli sport athlete as was his brother who was qb before him. A good qb does not have to work at it year round. A smart qb goes a long way though. Guhy is not the best passer, not a run threat but he is poised under fire and makes smart quick decisions and is like a coach at the line of scrimage often seeing what is there and then calling a audible to put us in the best matchups. That is what makes a good qb. My view of the Bw frosh qb is that he is ahead of where Guhy was as a frosh.

Problem could possibly be solved with no effort from Beechwood, there is rumor that Mayfield could move up to 2A.

Will be interesting to see how the new enrollment numbers and alignment come out for 2015 season.

Bishop Brossart had patitioned KHSAA to play in 1A because it was a new program and they were turned down. KHSAA was holding to the alignment - very few changes were allowed.

In the last few years, Cody Elliot was the best Beechwood passer. The Kid had an arm on him. However, he was extremely quick and a great runner. Also, on that team they had some very good running backs in Bankamper and Tiepel.

 

The offensive play calling has been run dominant over the past few years to a fault. In an earlier thread I proclaimed my opinion how the offensive play calling is sub par. For example, against Newcath inside the 5 yard line there was 4 straight running plays with a result in 0 points. Newcath had just about every player in the box yet we still were trying to run every play. If Nussbaum can't get in, Idk who else can besides Jackson from Mayfield. There isn't any balance and it doesn't help when your O-line isn't your strength by any means. I also mentioned building consistency with particular receivers. A perfect example is Mayfield's #3 who dropped 2 or 3 passes in the game, 2 of which would have most likely been TD's yet #3 still ended up within 2 receiving TD's in the game. The reason I bring this up is because Beechwood hasn't had any issues with receivers dropping passes this year. So why not throw it more often? Why not establish a passing game and get your best receivers involved? It's not like Beechwood doesn't have receivers who can catch the ball? Also, the constant switching of about 7 different receivers, running kids in and out every play is obnoxious. Find a core of 4 receivers and get them involved in the game!

 

IMO, this falls on Rash and Hergott. Cameron Lane starts at QB beginning of the season. First few games Beechwood had a few passing plays some resulted in TD's but majority ended up in INT's. It was pretty clear Lane was going to hardly ever throw the ball if he was going to continue to play QB. Nussbaum returned and then Sucanek started getting some snaps at QB. He became injured and his run at QB was very shortened. Next Nussbaum starts playing QB, which isn't his natural position and it was obvious everything both offensively and defensively was going to go through him. Throughout this 3 different QB offense a respectable passing game was never developed.

 

It made sense to run but the issue was that the competition against the Ludlow's, Bellevue's, Dayton's allowed Beechwood to get away with it. However, against stiffer competition like Newcath it was tougher to pass and Newcath exploited that completely by putting everyone in the box and stopping Beechwood's running game.

 

Fieger pretty much became the QB out of default. It was clear Lane wasn't getting it done, Sucanek never became a viable option, and Nuss provides much more of a threat when running the ball rather than passing or playing QB. Then came the suspensions. I would have loved to see Rash give Fieger a shot much earlier in the season against the Ludlow's, Dayton's, and Bellevue's. If you knew the kid could throw, which he is clearly good at, then why not see what he's got. Instead it comes playoff time and 20 kids get suspended so your forced to start Fieger and then you roll with him during the playoffs. I completely agree that it was the best move to play him at QB in the playoffs but isn't that on the coach to recognize his talent and put the best kids in particular positions.

 

I think Beechwood had success running the football and sticking to a certain style of football for so long that they fell in love with it and don't really look to deviate from it. It almost seems like the mindset that we are going to impose our style of play on you regardless of the circumstances. This brings me to my next point about making adjustments in the second half. Beechwood's adjustment's in the second half have been miserable all year. The offense is non existent and the defense ends up playing the entire half. For example, SK, Newcath, and Mayfield. The only reason Beechwood beat Dixie was because Dixie couldn't stop Nuss on the ground and Beechwood just outscored them in the second half.

 

I think it's clear Rash needs to input a passing game and it's clear Fieger can be that QB. With that being said it shouldn't have taken this long to do so. There is failure to have a balanced offense and over the past 4 years it seems as if Mayfield has caught on to that. The talent is there, as it certainly was last year more so than this year. Should be interesting the next 3 years for the Tigers, because there is no question the talent is there to win State.

Truth is that the Rome they are use to is no more and will never be as long as Mf is in 1A but they Bw will continue to win titles from time to time. I do think that the hope pinned on the frosh again is great but I would be cautious. It takes several back to back classes in my experience to win titles and a little luck from time to time. Not to mention, Mf's young groups coming up are probably just as good as Bw's

We have 5 posters from Mayfield and 0 from Fairview. Pretty elementary.

Bechwood's frosh this year handled everybody they played. Including Highlands, CovCath, NCC, Ryle etc..This is probably the best class Beechwood has ever had in my opinion.

Sorry if that doesn't faze me, I have heard all this before (NKY frosh champs, best frosh group ever) and I know what we have in the pipeline very first hand and I believe it usually takes more than 1 class at a time to really make a championship team. No doubt though the Bw kids are going to be successful. I suspect we will still have the upper hand next year but 2 years from now when we are rolling out a new qb I would think Bw would be the team to beat granted I also think that maybe the year for Williamsburg if they continue to develop and who knows who else is out there that will come along. That being said I think this is getting away from the spirit of where this thread was intending to go.

I don't think there is any doubt that something has to happen offensively and it has to be in the passing game. You are right, the Beechwood offense is old school. Beechwood's best plays came when they threw the ball. Both TD's were on passes. There should have been more of it. Look at Mayfield's offense last night. Talk all you want about how great Jackson is, but he became much more effective in the second half when Mayfield finally got the passing game on track. You have to face the fact that football is a passing game today on all levels. I really thought the Tigers were going to open it up last night. Did they throw one pass on first down? Did they throw one pass on 2nd down and less than 10? They threw the ball when they had to and that is no way to run an offense. They couldn't run the ball last year versus Mayfield with great backs and an excellent line led by a tackle who is starting as a freshman for a D1 school. Yet they still seemed focused on the run. Pass the ball or get ready for more pain versus the top notch teams on the schedule.

 

Who is the freshman starting for a D1 school and where is he playing?

If they don't they will see a similar result, the Cards are also seeing a loaded younger group comming up the pipeline. I fully see more success with that group. Even the middle school program is over the top right now.

 

TP this streak can't last forever. As a former player and as a alum this streak annoys us in a nice way. This streak should have ended a long time ago but you have to give Mayfield credit they made the plays when they had to. I'm still amazed at the 95 title game. Beechwood knocks out their starting QB and Mayfield still wins that game. When Beechwood won state in 99,2007,2008 Beechwood beat the teams that beat Mayfield the next week.
