I would be more than surprised if HHS won the next six in a row.

There may be some relative newcomers as "fans" to the Cov Cath football program who don't have a true grasp of the tradition behind the rivalry that would say to drop the game, but as far as I know, anyone with real stake in the Cov Cath football program would want it to stay without much question.

I can say as a CCH fan and player parent- yes I want to see Highlands on the schedule- even if districts get re-aligned. You get better by playing the best. Their district at present may be one of the most uneven in the state. I know Pendleton is going independent- but it's still a bizarre mix of two teams that could win the state every year and mediocre to poor programs.

 

CCH is slowly catching up- I firmly believe that. The days of the running clock blowouts are over- in the next few years I'd say we'll see something closer to a tight game through 4 quarters & a win by CCH.

 

I know Highlands has talented underclassmen- I also know that CCH does as well and that the middle school feeder program is aiding in this process.

CCH has a nice season. Conner had a nice season. Am I to say that Dave Wirth or Dave Trosper failed or that the Colonels or Cougars failed? Come on.

True, both schools had very nice years but you cant say those kids are not envious of the State Champs. You play to WIN THE GAME !!! ALL OF THEM.

All things eventually come to an end, and I think Highlands run of State Championships is definetly on the back nine.

Interesting fact: The 6 years prior to the 6 class system (2001 - 2006) Highlands and CovCath both had exactly 1 AAA State Championship a piece. During these years Boyle County won 3 titles, Lexington Catholic won 1 title. Enter 6 Classes with Highlands keeping stability in coaching, and CovCath having coaching instability and you have Highlands winning 5 Straight titles. Also, during 4 of these years Boyle County and Lexington Catholic were in a different classification. 6 classes could not have come at a better time for Highlands or a worse time for CovCath.

My point being, it is going to take time for CovCath to overcome that coaching instability. Coach Wirth is closing the gap and his teams improve every year. It took Dale 3 years to win his first championship and he did not have to compete with a beast like Highlands. CovCath was good at the time, but no where near the machine Highlands has become.

7-5 with two agonizing losses to CovCath? I don't think any player or coach walked away from that season regarding it as successful.

That's the problem with looking at W/L records. They lost twice to the state champ. Heck, they were probably the 2nd best team in the state that year. I saw it on the other end in 2004. My son's team lost twice to HHS (held them to a total of 27 points in 2 games). That team was anywhere from #2 to #4 in the state that year. Played a tough schedule. Lost to Elder and LaSalle. That team had a strong year. No way in hell I'm saying it wasn't successful based on W/L. Same thing I'd say about the 2006 HHS team.
