That's the problem with looking at W/L records. They lost twice to the state champ. Heck, they were probably the 2nd best team in the state that year. I saw it on the other end in 2004. My son's team lost twice to HHS (held them to a total of 27 points in 2 games). That team was anywhere from #2 to #4 in the state that year. Played a tough schedule. Lost to Elder and LaSalle. That team had a strong year. No way in hell I'm saying it wasn't successful based on W/L. Same thing I'd say about the 2006 HHS team.

Any way this is not about 6 years ago. It's about now. CovCath will at some time beat Highlands. I'm not sure when that will be, but I think it will happen.

Obviously, CovCath is going to beat Highlands at some time in the future. I'd say the odds of it happening with the current CCH coaching staff are much greater than then odds of it happening under the previous CCH coaching staff, so that is definitely a positive sign for CCH. It will be interesting to see if HHS and CCH stay in the same class after the next realignment.

 

As for the 2006 HHS squad, it was an interesting year. The 'Birds had a very talented junior class that year, and had some very good senior players as well. HHS suffered two very close losses to Cincy Elder and Columbus DeSales, and was beaten pretty handily by Louisville St. X at Paul Brown Stadium early in the year. And of course, there were the two losses to CCH. Those HHS juniors went on to have an outstanding year next year (2007), going undefeated, blowing out CCH in the playoffs and winning state. Given all this, I think it's hard to put an accurate label on the 2006 HHS squad. Had a few things gone differently during the season, HHS could easily have finished the year 14-1 or 13-2, but as it turned out the team finished 7-5. Coach Parcells once said that you are what your record says you are, and so I guess by that standard HHS had a subpar 2006 season (relatively speaking).

And hand grenades. Here is a question for which I don't have any answer. When was the last time Covington Catholic beat Highlands on any level? Hasn't been for a while.

The point of the thread really is to take a look into the future and see the direction these two programs are headed and the future players coming up the ranks. Not only that but the coaching staffs and where they may be 2-3 yrs down the road. Does Dale pass the torch to Weinrich soon? Can Worth build on the success? I think its great that the rivalry has been rekindled and the games are more competitive. When can the Colonels catch Highlands?

I know this is going to be hard for even your to swallow but I heard it straight from the mouth of player that was a senior on that team in 06 "We just weren't very good that year" LOL!!! To give my opinion on this thread. As long as Dale Mueller is head coach at Highlands and Covington Catholic is in the same district, it will be very difficult. I know he is very proud of what Dave Wirth is doing in Park Hills. And that coach Wirth is finally making the game competitive and bringing the Birds back to earth between these 2 football programs. However, if Dave Wirth and the rest of the CCH nation think they are gaining ground on Dale Mueller as a coach then you are sadly mistaken. Never question a "Mad" scientist. Ever since I saw the picture of Dale wearing a set of shoulder pads while teaching his class the 1st day of spring football 2012, I knew then and there that all is good with Highlands football and CCH has a while to catch them. Go Birds!!!

If it was AP Physics he needed to add a helmet. That was one tough class.
