Cov Cath is gaining on Highlands. Job number one to beat Highlands - have a running game with a great running back. It really is that simple IMO. If I am CCH, I look at Dressman at RB next year and start from there. If Dressman is your QB, then make sure he gets at least 10 running plays per game. I think CCH has a shot at Highlands next year if they can get all the pieces in the right spot.

 

Game plan wise, you have to slow the game down. Ryle showed everyone that thjis is how you can beat Highlands. Grind the ball. Control the clock. Reduce the number of possessions.

It hard to disagree with any of that, so what you are saying is it's all coming down to coaching decisions (some made in the offseason and during July workouts) and game planning. That's why I'll take HHS to continue to own CCH. Coach in place, system in place, scoreboard says it all.

Don't put words in my mouth, Krush. I didn't say it was over, or they're done. What I am saying is that Covington Catholic is turning the corner. they have the horses and the coaching staff to beat Highlands. Look at this years team. They were very capable of beating Highlands. I think that this trend will continue, so therefore, I think Covington Catholic will be able to not only compete with, but beat Highlands in the near future.

I believe it all has to do with reasonable expectations. It is the same way with any school. If Highlands had a reasonable expectation of winning the state basketball championship, and did not win, they would be disappointed. Whereas, Highlands has a reasonable expectation of winning the state football championship, so not winning would be a disappointment. Expectations may change in the future, or they may not, but they will most likely dictate the degree of disappointment.

Not so much the same on the basketball side unfortunately. Its hard enough to get some of the kids to stay with the sport let alone have the mindset that winning a basketball state championship is the primary goal. In hoops the goal is to win the 9th Region.

9th Region Titles in Basketball?

 

Come on Q, it was 2000-2001 season that HHS last won the 9th Region! CovCath won the Region in 2004 and went to the semi-finals of the Sweet Sixteen that year and again won the 9th Region in 2006!

 

I would think a fair comparison would be Baseball, as neither HHS or CovCath has won a State Basketball Title but CovCath has won a Baseball title!

 

Heck HHS hasn't even won a Regional Baseball Title since 1997, which BTW was the last year in which HHS beat CovCath in Baseball and those in Ft. Thomas think HHS has a huge advantage in Football over CovCath and look at 2006 as ancient history.

 

I mean if the fans in Ft. Thomas think 2006 was a long time ago, what do they say about 1997!

 

Lets face it Q, as you said, HHS is a Football school first, second and always and the other sports are just given second class status by the Ft. Thomas fans! Note I said fans and not the AD!
