November 7, 201213 yr From an economic perspective, the stock market reaction to the election says it all? Didn't help that the director of the European Central Bank went on the record this morning to say that the Euro Crisis is starting to affect Germany for the first time. The "economy" -- whatever it is -- and any issues associated with it have extremely high causal density. There are a lot of issues going into any movement in the markets and pinpointing them is very difficult to do in the moment. The Shanghai and Nikkei are both only slightly down and my guess is that the movement in EURO STOXX and the FTSE 100 have more to do with ECB announcement than with the American Presidential Election. All of those have great impact on our own markets.
November 7, 201213 yr Morgan Housel @TMFHousel A gay couple with preexisting conditions in Washington can now buy insurance, marry, and smoke a bowl in celebration. God bless America. I'm pissed that Obama won, but the tweets like above are fear mongering. What does it matter if a gay couple gets married? If affects the US economy negatively how? The preexisting condition w/ insurance is the only thing that worries me, in how it is being forced on health care companies. The smoking a bowl??? Is it any worse than smoking a pack of cigarettes while they split a fifth of vodka?
November 7, 201213 yr People are worried, that's what the stock market is saying. We can debate all kinds of reasons but the obvious one is the election results. Give it a little time and see what it does. People tend to overreact, then settle down.

At least the pot doesn't have list as long as your arm of chemicals added to it.
November 7, 201213 yr I know that was a serious tweet by Mr Housel, but I thought it was hilarious. I didn't know it was a serious tweet but I still thought it was hilarious.

I read this week that history shows the winner of the election has not impact on the stock market past the initial few days.
November 7, 201213 yr from: Mashable US & World News NATE SILVER CORRECTLY PREDICTS THE WINNER IN 50 OF 50 STATES Barack Obama may have comfortably won re-election in the electoral college, and squeaked a victory in the popular vote. But here is the absolute, undoubted winner of this election: Nate Silver and big data. The Fivethirtyeight.com analyst, despite being pilloried by the pundits, outdid even his 2008 prediction. In that year, his mathematical model correctly called 49 out of 50 states, missing only Indiana (which went to Obama by 0.1%.) This year, according to all projections, Silver’s model has correctly predicted 50 out of 50 states. A last-minute flip for Florida, which finally went blue in Silver’s prediction on Monday night, helped him to a perfect game. A caveat: Florida has not yet been called officially, but Obama is in the lead with 98% of precincts reporting. If anything, Silver’s placing of Florida on a knife edge makes him look even more prescient. No wonder one of the night’s more popular tweets suggested that he was actually from the future, working from old newspapers.
November 7, 201213 yr It was a good night for Nate Silver. However, I also read that had you simply picked states based upon 2008 you would have gotten 48/50. Where Nate did well was in regards to taking all of the polls with their wild variations and make sense of them.
November 7, 201213 yr I read this week that history shows the winner of the election has not impact on the stock market past the initial few days. Until he gets back to work. But you're right, after the initial reaction it tends to trend back where it was.

Give it a little time and see what it does. People tend to overreact, then settle down. The market was going down regardless of who won, but how far it bounces back will probably be measured a little differently I think.
November 7, 201213 yr I didn't know it was a serious tweet but I still thought it was hilarious. I only thought it was serious because of the "Tweeter".
November 7, 201213 yr I only thought it was serious because of the "Tweeter". Oh. I don't know who that dude is. I thought he was a comedian.
