What Impact Could/Will Sandy Have On the Election?

Featured Replies

Is it possible we will not have all states able to have the election next Tuesday?

Is it possible we will not know who wins for some time due to people not being able to vote OR states not being able to accurately tabulate votes?

It will be a mess if power is still out in a lot of areas. MESS!

The campaigns have put their lawyers on high alert status...

Certainly it's possible that the election is delayed or altered because of the storm. The storm itself is supposed to be finished on Thursday, correct?

I do think I speak for most Americans when I say we embrace the idea of a few more days of TV ads, radio spots, spontaneous phone calls, etc.

The storm may end Thursday but power could be out for weeks.

Is one side or the other hoping for the larger turnout? I would assume the President would want a higher turnout but not sure that is correct. Most of the states being hit the hardest I am guessing are not of the toss-up variety.

So much for pure electronic paperless voting!

And here is another question...

Who is looking after all those 'early votes' in these devastated areas?

I work with a lot of people in the path over the phone. They all have lost or are planning on losing power by late tonight.

The common thinking is that bad weather hurts the Ds more than the Rs.

Virginia is getting a fair amount of this storm. New Hampshire will see it later on. History has shown us that weather sometimes will have an impact in voter turnout.

It may hurt voter turnout, but bad weather hurts voter turnout everywhere. Now if the power is out, I'm sure they have heard of generators for the polling spots.

Virginia should have no problem, they know coal works.

I'm guessing the east coast libs are finding out what it is like to have "green energy".

 "I'm Randy Parker, and I approve this message."

I've heard VA mentioned but it seems like the vast majority of the states affected are safely in the D column. I'm not sure how any kind of storm could result in that changing. If the storm does have an affect and Romney wins, can we all agree that it was God's will?

The only impact I see is it could help ensure Romney wins the popular vote, but it should not impact the Electoral College and the election results. The states in the path of the storm are all strong Democrat with just New Hampshire in doubt, so Obama is going to win those electoral votes. But if turnout is lower in those states, it will reduce the national vote total for Obama.

The one state that may be impacted which is crucial is Pennsylvania. I would assume the eastern part of PA is more Democrat and has been impacted more by the storm than western PA. Lower turnout there could help get Romney 20 electoral votes in a state that is currently a tossup.

Can an election be rescheduled? I know the Constitution sets the date as the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. I also understand early voting is allowed, which I believe is established by the states. But what about delayed voting?
