October 23, 201214 yr For argument's sake, assume he got caught because he was wearing the stolen item(s). Zero percent chance he stays on the team.
October 24, 201214 yr Shamrock fan you know nothing about me. If you think coaching is only about wins and losses than there's no reason to debate. You can't, and likely never will, get it. You view a second chance as a "get out of jail free" card. I view a second chance as a way for those that can make an impact to get involved so the kid has a fighting chance once high school is over. If after a second chance you realize the kid is not willing to be helped, then the sport doesn't need him and he doesn't need the sport. I do want to apologize for saying you wanted to win more games. I shouldn't have said that. Still think you're being an enabler.
October 24, 201214 yr A kid with little, to none, parental guidance/support. I guess I'd need to know the motivation behind the theft in that scenario. And if the kid has stolen before. I need more info to give an honest answer.
October 24, 201214 yr My 2 cents, I know only 0.3 people care, lol. Every year I have to deal with this 3 and 4 times a year with the kids I coach, specifically in wrestling. Every kid will have a bag for their stuff, and when we go to tournamets all the bags get piled on top of each other in a corner or in the bleachers. Kids get in their bag, something falls out into another kids bag, kids grab the wrong bag and leave with out checking, it just happens when you have 30+ kids and all their stuff is together. Also kids will borrow other kids Ipods and stuff and just forget they still have it. We have a procedure for when stuff goes missing/stolen. First if a kid notices something missing they are report it to me. First thing I have them do is recheck their bag/car/house whatever make sure you dont have it. Second, (Item is still missing) we will announce it too the group, someone is missing item X, every body check your stuff make sure you dont have it by mistake (weather taken on purpose or by accident) if you do but it in the drawer---(we have a filing cabinet in our practice room that I put all the items left after practice in so the kids can get them the next day.) Hopefull at this point in a day or so the item showes up. Third - at this point someone stole the item - (Item still missing) I will make every kid dump their bags out an check everyones stuff. If it turns up (realizing if the theif was smart he doesnt keep it on them) kid is automaticly suspended from team, written up per school policy for theift and is dealt with by school. In the past 3 kids have been written up for theift, two received 3 day suspensions from school, one ended up being expelled because it turned out he was a habitual theif and had tons of school property in his home as well. My point here is that in our case, its not as simple as its missing so someone must have stolen it. Stuff can just get mixed up at times, and so thats why we give a short window for the item to "magically reappear" with no recourse. Now If I blantenly see a kid see something and believe me it happens, some will do it right out in the open. It immediately goes to stage 3 and a write up and suspension. It seems to work for the most part.

At least you have a policy in place.
October 25, 201214 yr Wow! I hope my kid doesn't end up wrestling for your school. Kids leaving stuff, kids getting stuff out of wrong bag, 3 kids getting "caught". At least you have a policy in place. 1. 3 kids have been caught stealing in a 7 year period. 2. Kids leave stuff after practice every night, tonight it was a small hoodie left after practice. 3. I didn't not say kids get stuff out of wrong bags. I said all the kids pile their stuff up together in the bleachers and stuff gets mixed up at times. The kids are always told before they leave an event/practice to look completely through their bag and make sure nothing that is not theirs is in their. When you have 25+ kids, all with the same blue and black bags, its easly to put something in the wrong one when you do it in a hurry.

Maybe if the punishment was more severe you may have only had 1 in 7 years?
October 25, 201214 yr You are proud you have ONLY had 3 thefts in 7 years? Maybe if the punishment was more severe you may have only had 1 in 7 years? Fair enough I guess, Considering the theived items were, 1 Ipod, a wallet that contained less than $10.00 cash in it, and a mini CD binder with about 10 CD's in it. How much more severe of a punishmet do you want. If suspension from school isnt enought than what is. The parents can press charges I assume.
October 25, 201214 yr I would think expultion from the team would go without saying, plus a suspension from school.
October 25, 201214 yr Serious question for those that feel like the hammer should be dropped on the student; have you raised any kids through high school years? Did they make mistakes? Did you have any regrettable transgressions when you were in high school?
October 25, 201214 yr Serious question for those that feel like the hammer should be dropped on the student; have you raised any kids through high school years? Did they make mistakes? Did you have any regrettable transgressions when you were in high school? Yes, yes and yes
October 27, 201214 yr Serious question for those that feel like the hammer should be dropped on the student; have you raised any kids through high school years? Did they make mistakes? Did you have any regrettable transgressions when you were in high school? These questions have bothered me, too. Some have said that your team is like your family. If that's true, what would happen if your son/daughter stole something from another one of your children? I doubt that you kick him/her out of your family. Additionally, I see my role as helping young people learn how to be good adults. Some kids come from very bad circumstances and they do what they see in their daily lives. Kick them off the team and they will only be part of that bad circumstance, not part of what the team can teach them. If they steal, yes, have very severe penalties, but I don't think that I could kick them off the team for a first offense.
October 29, 201213 yr For argument's sake, assume he got caught because he was wearing the stolen item(s). That is one dumb kid.

Sorry to keep asking a question that I can't get answered, but once again, what about the victim? What are you telling the person who had something stolen when you don't seriously punish the thief? What are you telling them about their worth? What are you telling them about their place on the team? What about their parents, who maybe worked hard to provide the item that was stolen? Why will no one address this question? Why focus on turning the perpetrator into the victim? Sorry, but I had to ask one more time.
