Question for high school coaches about theft

Featured Replies

How do you and/or how should you handle an internal theft on your team where one player steals an item(s) from another player?

I call for locker room justice!!

In my 4 years being associated with the fastpitch team this has not been an issue, but then again our girls don't use the locker room since home games are off campus and starting at 5:00 they either change at home or a teammates house. For away games they will change in the locker room and then put things in their cars or if they live close to school will change at home and come back to school.

If I were in charge I would make an example out of someone to show the rest that this will not be tolerated. Sad when you can't trust your own teammates. :madman:

Did something happen that you are bring this question to the masses??

Something did happen but I am going to leave that sleeping dog alone.

I am really interested in hearing what coaches do and/or what the masses think should be done.

So we can put L13 down for street justice.

Well, the player should be punished, but what punishment and by who? It would depend on the value of the item(s) stolen IMO.

For arguments sake lets say $100.

Tough call, I remember the whole team being punished and having to run when certain things happened. Only problem with that you risk upsetting the leaders and players that are busting their butts and doing things the right way. I guess if you're going to punish the team until you get answers let them know ahead of time what's in store if an incident occurs. Of couse I'm saying if you don't know who actually stole the item. If you do know, then make then run, do clean up duties and suspend them from playing for a while. Better for them to learn this lesson now than after high school when they could be facing prison time.

Also, assume the case is solved. In other words, the perpetrator was caught.

Was just being funny, but I could see that happening in some cases as kids well be kids.

Now you said, less then a C-note and perp caught. If I'm head coach, principal and parents get a phone call to know the situation. Then I explain to them that their son/daughter will be my guest on the bench for at least a week to hear my synopsis on this issue. They would also have to explain to the whole team what they did and ask to be accepted back. My feeling is you come down somewhat hard now and "nip it in the bud" before this kind of behavior goes any further and you let the others see the consequences for said offense.

Theft from a team mate? They are gone. Enjoy the season from the stands.

Sad part is that it may depend on how good the player is. Star player, runs a few extra laps. Bench player may get kicked off.

There is no excuse for theft.

I have been a member of a selection committee for both head football and basketball coaches. This question is one that we always ask. Almost all coaches say that they would kick the kid off the team. Whether they would actually do it or not, I don't know.

I don't care how good the kid is, you boot him. If he got caught, and its a surefire thing, you boot him.

If there is empirical evidence they are gone for the season. If it is an underclassmen they'd have to run into the soles of their shoes fell off if they wanted me to even consider letting them come back next year.

Without empirical evidence it becomes a little trickier. Especially if its evidence of the "he said, she said" nature.

Supposed the offender was caught "red handed" with the stolen item(s) leaving no doubt.

I should add that I gave my answer assuming there was definitive proof.
