USA Today Pre-Season Coaches Poll

My point is college basketball is very weak this season.

It certainly seems that way. And I think the NBA Draft will be incredibly weak too.

NC State is still coached by Gottfired. Expect underachievement...

I realize they are in the MAC but how is Ohio not in the top 25? Sweet 16 team that was one possession away from beating North Carolina last year away from the Elite 8 and has everyone back.

I wasn't aware that they had everyone back. If so, it would be hard to disagree.

New coach is the only thing I can think of.

I know I'm an IU fan but with their depth and guards, I think they are a massive letdown in the tourney away from a Final 4 this year.

The last time they were preseason number 1 in this poll they went undefeated. Just saying....;)

This is why I love NKY. 3 of the top 4 teams can be seen within a 1.5-2.0 hour drive. And Indiana is not that bad of a drive.

Yep...and all of the top five are within a +/- 4 hour drive.

I didn't think the USA Today poll was around in '76.

I recall IU being ranked #1 in preseason in '79-'80 maybe. They were #1 when they came to Rupp and UK beat them.

I look for a lot out of the Hoosiers and they are pre-season favorite IMO.

Maybe it was the Coaches Poll.
Missouri is better than 17th

Should they be 14th? Does it really matter?

The Big 10 is going to be strong again.

Zeller is going to be a challenge to handle.

If they are better than 17th then they should be able to prove it pretty quickly as their only "tough opponents" prior to the start of league play are an unranked Stanford team and UCLA which is ranked 13th preseason. FWIW Lindy's Sports preview of College Basketball that's sitting on my desk had the Tigers @ 19th in their preseason rankings.

The last time IU was ranked #1 at any point was 1992, according to one of my bosses who played for Bobby Knight in the 80's.

.

Correct. USA Today started in September of 82 I think.

Maybe it was the Coaches Poll.

UPI and AP had polls in '76.

I still wonder if they were preseason #1 going into the '80 season. I know they were #1 in early December when UK played them at Rupp. Isaiah Thomas was frosh that year and the next year the Hoosiers went on to win the title.
