Newport Central Catholic 58 Bishop Brossart 0

Final.

Jake Elbert was at the helm tonight as Brossart's QB but went down in 1st half with a knee injury. Prayers go out to Jake. He is a great kid. Tough game to watch for sure.

Congrats to the Breds!! Could have been 100 to 0 from what I was told nice to see NewCath keep it classy and call the dogs off in this one. I am sure a few people are mad that the score could sway a few St. Joe and St Mary kids to the hill.

Nobody likes to lose 58-0, but evaluating the game coming in it appeared inevitable. Anyone who sincerely expected better was hallucinating. We HOPE we can compete, but when it comes to the nuts and bolts of where we are right now and where they are right now, things are grossly slanted towards NCC. They have 65 kids on their roster, 20 of which are freshmen. Brossart has 31, 11 of which are freshmen. We have no depth, are presently relegated to playing a 5'4" 120 pound freshmen quarterback, and then to make things worse, lose the one player we can't afford to lose, three position (quarterback, linebacker, punter) senior Jake Elbert with what appears to be a hyperextension of the left knee.

With that being said, NCC was already far in front and had established themselves as the superior entity prior to Elbert's departure, but we lost our ability to compete to any degree at that point. Congrats to Craig Pfefferman, the aforementioned freshman QB. The kid is a warrior, tough as nails, mean as a snake and his voice hasn't changed yet! He plays with poise and completed a couple of tough passes, and to freshman Logan Schoulties who did a great job running the football against the NCC 2s/3s, with whom we competed quite admirably throughout the entire second half of running clock.

As far as having this game's outcome influence kids from our feeders to go to NCC for football then so be it, but football isn't the only thing that Brossart does. We are more than competitive with the Breds in every other area including academics. If those prospective Mustangs/Breds were observant tonight they saw our freshmen nucleus group hold their own with the NCC nucleus freshmen group. NCC's Jacob Smith ran for a long yardage touchdown which would have proved to be the difference. As they say in the financial world, past performance is no indication of future results. Perhaps hitching their wagon to those Brossart freshmen and to the present Junior High Colts, they might find their individual football experience at Brossart to be superior down the road to that of being number 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, or 65 in the storied NCC program. Who knows???

Good job NewCath!

How is Elbert? I was able to see him play a few weeks ago & absolutely loved his toughness. Hope he is okay.

After NCC lost to SK I am sure they were looking for a redheaded stepchild to whip and Brossart was unfortunately that team.

Losing your best player doesnt help either. Keep your heads up Mustangs and this could be good for the Breds as they get closer to District play.

For all that this topic is discussed, I really don't think it's that big of an issue, at least from a St. Mary perspective. I can't speak for St. Joe's but Brossart loses more kids to Campbell County than NCC coming out of St. Mary. In the last 4 years, I can think of no more than 4 in each year that chose NCC over Brossart and most, if not all of those families were diehard NCC families so it was a no brainer. If you take out football, Brossart can compete with NCC on every other level so I just don't see the big swaying difference. It's going to take awhile in Atown but things did look promising in the 4th Q when it turned into more or less, freshman on freshman. That's the only time, I think Brossart was really able to move the ball. Logan Schoulthies did a great job! Sean Tieman also did a good job taking over Elbert's role as main ball carrier. He took some mean hits last night and got up every time!

IMO What Brossart needs is to keep developing through the Colts program and try to get more boys to come out for the team. So much wasted talent roaming the stands. I absolutely hate how high school sports has developed into a one sport career for kids. I miss the days of watching a 3 sport athlete excel in each sport.

What happened to the Pelgen kid at QB???

Mustang, i disagree with you on so many things not only in BGP land but in real life with the rules you try to get in place about forcing a family to spend their money at a certain school by what grade school they go to. BUT with that said I believe your post if a very respectable one. Maybe the only time you will ever get a like from me. If I am quick to point out the negative in someone its only fair I am just as quick to point out when that person change says something respectable.

Brossart hasn't always started the 5'4 120 Frosh QB, correct?

Pelgen was sitting out due to violating school school rules. He should be able to return next week.

A cousin of mine lives in Alexandria goes to St Marys has 3 kids . His 2 daughters attended Brossart , but his son wants to play football so he is going to NCC , wise choice .

Mustang, I agree with the first part of the post, numbers do play a big part, especially in football. As far as middle school kids thinking long term and seeing the big picture, well it's not going to happen. They see 58-0! Unfortunately some parents are seeing that also and in your circle that might not be coming out of their mouths but in other circles they sometimes do. Academics and other sports they are very similar but if you have a decent football player ofcourse looking at 4 years of getting pounded or 4 years of competing for a state title will be part of the conversation.

I certainly concur with your reasoning. I also think that something has to change within our football program in order for it to be an asset to our high school. In starting the program the thinking was that we would pick up some of those kids from our feeder schools who wished to go to school closer to home and that our program would eventually grow into a competitive unit, as have the rest of our sports, and that we would live happily ever after. However, we grossly underestimated what it takes to develop a successful football program, and that is numbers, with a core of skilled football players to build around. The 58-0 example shown last night says that this isn't happening. If we would have lost with a roster of 65 kids, then we could shake our head and say that we are simply a bad football program, but that is not the case. We have been in this business since 2006 and can no longer claim that we are in our infancy, and something must be done to increase our numbers in order to survive.

In my opinion, we do have a competitive freshmen group, and a good number of players participating in our Colts junior high program. They are the light at the end of our tunnel. We've got to keep these kids in our program to have any chance at all of being successful at football. If these kids get frustrated and fall by the wayside and if five years from now we are still losing to NCC 58-0 with a 20 man upperclassman roster, then I think that even the staunchest of Brossart football supporters will declare Mustang football a failed project.

The bottom line is that the kids we are losing to Campbell County, NCC, and possibly CovCath, are the same kids we would be losing to those schools if we did not have football, so we are really not out anything. It is our commission to make some things happen that will attract them to consider Brossart football, and right now the promise of a bright future is all that we can hang our hat on.

Jake Elbert is a perfect example of a kid who looked at both scenarios and still picked Brossart. He visited NCC and I know he had 1 or 2 sideline visits to Highlands when he was an 8th grader.
