Great day at the ol' ballyard. The weather was perfect. Sun coming in and out of the clouds. Kids running around everywhere. Very cordial mix of fans from Cov. Cath. and Boone County.

 

I know the lights are coming but I will miss the Saturday afternoon games. Saw players, coaches, or fans from Simon Kenton, Beechwood, Ryle, Highlands and Holmes.

 

The Colonels didn't kick it in until the 2nd quarter but things were well under control from early in the 2nd on. The defense was smothering. The Colonels have a big strike vertical offense that is fun to watch.

 

I veered off the usual cheeseburger at Jack's charcoal grill on the visitor side at halftime in favor of a grilled chicken sandwich. It was darn good. All in all, a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

It will be different; since playing football back in my high school years, I have always made at least a game or two every season on Saturday in Park Hills.

Lol! Is that what they cal it. Last burger I had there was sprinkled with that world famous seasoning. Mmmmmm good!

 

Sounds like CCH's D is the real deal. They have come a long way from just a few years ago.

Casey Boston was the injured player. Boone has enormous talent. Moss, Diaw, Boston, Floyd and Marshall. That is an incredible stable of athletes. It is all meaningless in today's game if you do not have a commitment to a down field passing game. I feel for the kids and parents at Boone because this program has so little to show for such a stable of talent.

 

Floyd, Marshall, Moss ... not sure about the others ... are all too young to be much of a factor. Talent alone is not enough in varsity football. Young players may be able to help but it is rare that they can be a big factor in the outcome of games when they are facing players 2-3 years older who have been in the weight room and conditioning programs for those 2-3 years. IMO any team that has to count on their sophomores to make big plays faces an uphill battle because those sophomores just aren't ready yet.

I was told yes but I don't want to get into any specifics.

 

This is a specific but I'll ask anyway, do you know if he'll be back by September 21st?

Diaw is an 18 year old junior. Boston is also a junior.

No, I would say much more was expected from Boone. If you notice, they are still in the NKY coaches poll even at 0-4!

Random thoughts:

 

I really like Bir, he throws a great ball and he is the key to CovCath's success.

CCH pass blocks really well but I think they have an issue run blocking. I wonder what is going to happen in a tight game inside the 5 yard line?

CovCath looked a little flat to me.

If LaSalle and CovCath are about even LaSalle has to be way down by GCL standards this year.

Bottom line, CCH is good but they didn't look like anything special on Saturday.

Boone came out strong and pushed the CCH defense around like men pushing boys around. Of course, Boone self destructed and didn't get anything to show for it.

Boone changed QBs for this game. The new QB runs the ball nice but in my opinion if you look at Ingolia's (former QB) body of work and not just the Cooper game he is a better thrower.

The biggest problem for Boone County is pass defense, this game was worse than the Conner game where they forgot how to play pass defense. I realize CovCath has a nice passing attack but the Boone pass defense looked confused on too many plays to have a chance in the game.

I know this is going to sound crazy but Boone could win the next six games on their schedule or they could lose all of them.

Final thought, I realize this is just one game but I think Highlands looks a little better than CCH at this point. And let's face it folks, if CCH doesn't get by Highlands this year I am not sure they do anytime soon.

No doubt about it but I think Dressman comes in and brings the combo of the throw and the running of Erpenbeck from a few years back, next year, and they have a deep nucleus that will return from this team.

That will be a big loss. They have quite a few young guys in the pipeline that have the potential to do very well.

I know Dressman is a stud, I know Wagner looked great in the JV game but as punt said, its all potential at this point and Bir is the real deal.
