Far too many little boys were truly punished by the actions of those few. The simple reality here...

I agree with you there...I guess I just wonder who you're really punishing if the culprits are out of the picture.

Let me put it this way, were not the employees of Enron punished (loss of everything) by the actions of a few? World Com? I am not comparing the two acts, however, Penn state is nothing more than a company, who had leaders at the top, they did wrong, this wrong however, is millions of times over. Enron is gone, so should Penn State.

YES! ALL players should be able to go elsewhere without sitting out, heck give them an extra year. Shut the program down for two years. Let this be a wake up call to all colleges, they need to have control over their programs. Now manybe some people hate Penn St to begin with, but they will not shut down the college, but the football program deserves it.

Without question. If there is a "Lack of Institutional Control" chapter in the books, I don't know how this doesn't top the list. The institution lacked control in covering up the rape of children in order to maintain their "spotless" image. That is directly tied to the athletic department and football program. You can't possibly lack control of your NCAA institution in a manner worse than this. Death. Penalty...

So because 4 men made major mistakes in life everyone now wants to punish the everyone that has ever attended the university. I would say the university has produced way more positive things than this one situation.

This is not an Athletic issue. Sandusky is paying for his terrible actions. The Former AD & Pres. will get prison time and pay for their actions as well. Joe Pa I think is paid for his actions in his short time. No he didnt go to jail, but to die with this on his hands had to be painful.

I will not let this incident ruin my opinion of Joe Pa. However I will agree he is responsible for not help Sandusky go to prison.

Really? He covers up these horrid events, and you're ok with that. It was stated yesterday that at least 7 additional boys were molested after he mad the decision not to contact authorities on 2001. I don't understand how anyone support a man that makes those decisions.

At first, I thought absolutely no way death penalty. It wasn't a football issue. But you make a valid point above. It still doesn't feel like the death penalty is the appropriate punishment - not because of its harshness but because I see it as an institutional crime, not a football program crime. However, if I can't think of an appropriate alternative punishment, I may change my mind and agree with you.

I am failing to see how this is not an athletic issue. Sandusky used Penn State football to bring in children that he could rape. Penn State football - most notably Joe Pa - reinforced his actions to protect Paterno and the brand. Penn State is an institution of higher learning, technically. But Paterno and the football program ran the University.

Remember, the first incident came about in 1998. Paterno opted to do nothing. My theory is because his coaching star was starting to diminish and did not want this tarnishing his legacy. Then how does Penn State punish Sandusky, by nominating and Sandusky receiving the Assistant Coach of the Year award for college football. Yes, that happened after they were made aware of the '98 incident.

Yes really.

The man made a horrible mistake. Just like a lot of others did with this situation. If he was still a live he should be held accountable for that mistake. There were several more people to blame than Joe Pa. The media and talk shows are on him because of who he is.

Yes he is guilty of cover up. I am not someone that believes his intent was to harm these young men.

You are absolutely correct. His intent was to protect his friend, football program, and most importantly himself. You can decide where that falls on the egregious hypocritical scale for a coach and leader of his stature.
Yes really.

Doesn't matter if his intent was to harm them or not. The fact is he put his program's well being above that of these childern. I don't care what good Joe Pa did, this over shadows all of it. If he were alive he should go to prison.
Yes really.

Well he made this "mistake" many times. He knew what was happening. He knew what would happen if he did report it. He purposefully did nothing. He enabled the situation to continue. The buck stopped on his desk. How do you face the victims and their families, and say, hey we knew what was happening, I was in charge, and I made the decision to let it continue. Then you ask, why would he not report it? Joe Paterno allowed a very dark and sinister person to destroy young mans lives, in the vein of maintaing the reputation of Penn State, the football program, and himself. I cannot look past this. His legacy will be destroyed when this over. And I say rightfully so.

Ok here is a paragraph from an article.

The May 1998 complaint by a woman whose son came home with wet hair after showering with Sandusky didn't result in charges at the time.

Ok so if this mother went to the University and they did nothing. Then this mother is responsible for the cover up too.

Because if my child came home and told me he had showered with a coach and things happened then I wouldn't be quite until someone was dead.

So my point is this - I agree that Joe Pa made a terrible mistake. I am not sure what he was thinking at the time. But several other people made the same mistake. The difference none of them are as big as Joe Pa. This mother and Mike McQueary are two examples of folks that are also responsible.

OK back to the topic. I voted yes. Send a message to all institutions. This is something that is way beyond tolerance. Also, you walk a slippery slope when allowing one person to become larger than the institution itself.

I agree. However, those two aren't in charge. Not only did he allow it to happen but he made sure, using his power, that he still had a place to do it in even after Sandusky quit coaching. He gave him the resources, access to kids and facilities, to carry it on.
