That is a pretty lame answer. So I guess you should only enforce laws that don't inconvenience you? After all, he was just standing there. I didn't know selective enforcement was an option (and yes, I know that is naive of me).

They added a smoking section to PBS now to hopefully prevent that. It was nasty walking through those ramps. Tons of smokers would go down that way.

I have a few friends who are officers and they said with a ticket, the person has to go to court and the judges in Campbell County throw them out. The judges are all smokers and they have been informed not to write tickets for littering with their cigarette butts. Pretty sad.

if they continue to fill the judges docket with tickets, they will eventually get sick and tired of facing them and change their stance.....

 

I bet most judges have a drink or two also.....doesn't mean they don't enforce the pi and dui regs.....

I've never met a smoker....or former smoker.....that EVER admitted that they did. It was always those other dirty smokers.

 

I'm a former smoker who threw pretty much every cigarette butt that I smoked out the window of my car. It irks me now that I did that...and when other people do.

 

Last night on the drive home, the overhead digital traffic signs on I-75 in Cincinnati actually said "Please don't throw cigarette butts out of your windows. It is a fire hazard in the dry weather." I've never seen that before. I'm glad they posted that though. I remember about 7 or 8 years ago, driving down to Nashville in late July and seeing about a 300 yard long swath of the grass median on I-65 south completely on fire from someone tossing a cigarette butt in the dry dry heat.

OK...if you still smoke these days knowing the consequences, your choice.......

 

However......I am sick and tired of driving behind someone and having butts hit my car because smokers think butts aren't littering. Keep it in the car........

 

Pull up to any intersection and while you are stopped, look around on the ground.......butts all over the place....same with in front of any store.

 

As soon as they name me Czar of the Earth (or at least my little corner of it)....if you get caught throwing a butt on the ground, instead of a ticket, you will spend 2 hours in 101 degree heat picking up the butts....BY HAND....you don't get to use those cool pick up devices.....

i would like to resurrect this thread - i agree with all of the above, except the punishment should be to eat the butts they pick up.

 

i will never understand the idea that it's OK to just toss your butt out the window. it's littering, pure and simple. i often think, would they toss their McDonald's bags out the window too, and sadly the answer is probably yes. pull up to any intersection and count the butts along the curb, it's way out of hand.

 

A whopping 45% of US smokers didn't graduate HS, with 47% of US smokers living at or below the poverty level. Since only smokers are littering with butts, it kind of paints a picture of who is doing this - poor, uneducated people who don't give a crap about themselves - or anyone else (yet they've got money to buy smokes)

Glyde, according to your stats. More than half of these litter bugs are educated and live above the poverty level ?

The majority of smokers I come across believe they are exempt from anything. There are NO SMOKING signs posted everywhere on the campus of the hospital where I work. Smokers ignore them all the time. They even gather right in front of the entrance to the ER. The security staff has to run them off all the time. They sure as heck aren't going to worry about throwing their butts out their cars.

I've recently quit, though. So I don't really count.

I hate everything about smoking. I hate mowing my yard and have cigarette butts that people have thrown out of their window in it.

 

Do new cars even have ashtrays?

I'm guilty. When I smoked I threw my butts out the window.

I can understand your skepticism.

 

All I can say is that Mrs. S would not ride in my car because the ashtray was generally always overflowing, as well as at least one pop can, with me working on another. Just because I didn't throw the butts out the window did not mean I was not a slob. I was. A disgusting slob, at that.

 

I'm still a slob. I just don't smell bad, now. Well, not like cigarettes, anyway.
