June 12, 201214 yr This is a coaster I used to love when I was younger. I still enjoy coasters and The Beast is a classic. But, over the years, I have started to get sorta paranoid when riding it. :eek:After all, it is a wooden coaster. Wood deteriorates. Bolts loosen. Now, the cars shake and rattle like never before. Is it me or will it be anytime soon that a major catastrophe happens? I know they have maintenance personel walk the track every morning, but can they seriously see everything?
June 12, 201214 yr Good question. I have always loved The Beast. I'll probably be hesitant to ride it from now on. Thanks a bunch Amber Lamp. Seriously though, I haven't ridden it in about 7 or 8 years but I remember it wasn't as smooth as I had remembered and that took away from what was once a great coaster.
June 12, 201214 yr Author Ha Share my paranoia. I would feel better if they closed it for a year and did a thorough exam.
June 12, 201214 yr Ha Share my paranoia. I would feel better if they closed it for a year and did a thorough exam. That is probably a great idea given the age and use of The Beast. An all time great deserves to be preserved by any means necessary.

June 12, 201214 yr Funny how your body changes over the years. That ride now beats the crap out of me. Probably my biggest mistake this year was riding The Diamondback twice before riding the Beast. Diamondback is as smooth as a coaster can be and by comparative standards is like riding on a pillow compared to a 4 minute long mechanical bull ride. I too have always wondered about the long term maintenance of the ride.
June 12, 201214 yr I'm not a huge coaster guy but I love the Beast. The final section when you go thru the tunnel really beats the snot out of you.
June 12, 201214 yr I can't ride wooden roller coasters anymore. I'm not even that old but they beat the crap out of me now! Vortex as the Diamondback are awesome though.
June 12, 201214 yr Everytime I get off a coaster I feel beyond disoriented. My wife loves coasters so I feel entitled to give her a good time when we go but it's not easy when you feel queasy.
June 12, 201214 yr Haven't The Racers been there even longer? Are they still there? I haven't been in about 6 years. Also hasn't The Cyclone been around forever too? I bet a lot of the wood gets replaced each year.

June 12, 201214 yr I would be willing to bet there are a lot of safety checks and repairs done regularly by people who know what they are doing. As a youth, , I would have ridden any ride at KI. The bigger the better! Now just watching a commercial about it makes my neck hurt!
June 12, 201214 yr I am a roller coaster enthusiast, and worked at Cedar Point several years. If anything The Beast is safer now than it was when it was built in 1979. All of the fastening and breaking systems are much improved over what they were then. The Beast doesn't shake you anymore now than it did then. It just hurts more as you get older.
June 12, 201214 yr I would think that any significant maintenance is what happens usually from November to April while the park is closed to the public. Bingo! All the rides are extensivey checked and maintained during the off season from what I've been told (and I know some folks very involved at KI). Amber, you have a much greater chance of getting killed driving to KI than while at KI riding the Beast.

That's what I figured, lawsuits are a lot more expensive than day to day maintenance of these machines, not to mention the fact that an accident can really put a dent in revenue if people are afraid to ride the rides due to negligence on the part of the park operators.
