December 18, 201312 yr Just re-read Five Chimneys by Olga Lengyel. She was a Hungarian survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau. She survived primarily because of her meager medical knowledge as a trained surgical assistant. The book was one of the first published eyewitness accounts to depicting the horrible treatment and systematic murder of the Jews, Catholics, gypsies, political prisoners and and other "undesirables" committed by the Nazis in concentration camps. It is similar in length and style to Elie Wiesel's more well known book, Night. However, Wiesel seems to take slightly more time and effort to offer some reflective thoughts, while Lengyel simply lays out the unbelievable details of her life in Auschwitz and leaves you to do the reflection after you read.
December 18, 201312 yr In the process of reading Deadhouse Gates, the 2nd of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series, still. Very good, just very little time lately. Have Cormac McCarthy's Child of God on deck...
December 25, 201312 yr ^ Papa let me borrow his copy of this a couple of years ago, but I bought it a few weeks ago & started on it Sunday. Interesting to see some of the differences between book & movie, but also interesting that some of the movie's lines come verbatim from the book.

December 25, 201312 yr Is that one part of a series? Lincoln Rhyme. Pretty sure that book also introduces Kathryn Dance, who now has her own series.

December 25, 201312 yr Got "Five Days In Memorial" for Christmas. It's a book about a hospital and some doctors and patients that were stuck in the hospital during Hurricane Katrina. They had to make decisions on how to prioritize patients and medicines with limited supplies. Pretty interesting. I'll let you all know how it is once I finish.
December 25, 201312 yr Author Got "Scorecasting" for Christmas, about halfway through. Fascinating read.
