Well, I have no real complaints and wasn't bored. I got to watch the Davis kid from Knott Co Central and was so impressed with his play and all he has endured.

 

I also watched a kid that was playing at the Y last year, and this year was playing in the state tourney and fulfilled a wish come true for him...."Taylor Howard".

 

Witnessed the gusty play of the Southwestern team.

 

Witnessed the GRC team that wasn't even supposed to win thier region, but did so with defense, unselfish play and heart.

 

Watched a sub, Thacker from Rowan Co, come off the bench and have a fanstatic game and tourney.

 

I got to watch some of the best talented Freshman the state has to offer.

 

 

Watched Dieudonne, and the whole Trinity team show why they had been ranked #1 all season.

 

These are some of the things I will remember from this state tourney. Won't remember the music or between game entertainment..not what I come to see.

What's up with all the complaints? With attendance down, NCAA tournament conflicts, the program sucks, lack of entertainment, stale atmosphere and overall lack of talent this year, lots of blowouts: sounds like Kentucky has the "Greatest Show on Earth!"

I'm a little confused on this one. It's federal law that the boys' tournament almost always goes second or that they're supposed to take turns? Or that they're supposed to be during the NCAA Tournament? The boys' tournament has been played second (and thus during the NCAA Tournament) for the last 6 years and after next year's hiccup the subsequent 3 years (and probably longer - that's just the furthest they've put dates out). I'm not really sure how Title IX would play into this one.

 

The current rules found here state this:

 

Girls - Board of Control policy as of this date is to play this tournament, unless venue conflicts exist, during week preceding the NCAA Mens’ First Round Tournament Week

It's my understanding the the state had been in violation of Title IX for a number of years, by allowing boys regional tournaments to have their semi-finals and finals on weekends, Friday and Saturday. Forcing the girls regional to be played on weeknights (usually Monday and Tuesday). Thus, they were going to have to move the girls to the weekend format for a number of years to regain compliance. Perhaps that's the reason for what you found in the Board of Control guidelines.

 

The guideline you mentioned is obviously a new one, relatively speaking. As the boys regional tournaments were played first and state tournament first for a number of years.

 

I'm basing all of this on things I was told several years ago, by reliable but not golden sources. Sorry for the length of the post, but I'm trying to tell you where I think the whole thing stems from. If I'm wrong, my bad, but based on what I was told way back when, Title IX is at the root of the scheduling matter. Let me know what you find.

I feel the overall complainig was a result of the lack of overall talent playing in this tourney. I have been going since 1986 and i do believe this was as down as i have seen it. Hope we see things pick up in the near future.

 

 

I'll have to agree with this. Where are the Rex Chapman's, Wes Unseld's, Allan Houston's, Kenny Higgs, Winston Bennett's, etc...? Seems like there were more talent in the Sweet 16 back in the day.

They're playing for LSU, Western, Louisville, Butler, UC. They're all over the place. We often dream back to perceived glory days and we have guys like Hickey, Justice, Behannan, Zollo, Guyn and others who are still playing at the highest level.

Agree, and you are not going to get that talent every year, but there is still lots to enjoy. Seeing all the grandparents wearing buttons of thier grandsons, or shirts with thier names on the back, and proud as a peacock. All 16 teams so filled with pride when they take the court that they are the select few that made the tourney. And lets not forget..... Coaches working the refs....

I walked in when Davis was at the line at the end of that Friday night game and it was very exciting. Then I watched about half of the Scott Co/John Hardin game before me and a couple guys heard Duke was about to get beat so we high tailed it for the Hyatt Bar and watched that awesome spectacle.

Talent was there, it was young though and with the way the game had gotten so physical on defense, less mature kids have a rough time.

Good post. This year's tourney was a little down but I suppose the talent in the past few years has been there more than what I was thinking. I tend to live in the distant past too much sometimes. It's an age thing.

Was told today old programs cost $7.00 to produce and was being sold for $5.00.

1. The new programs are a real bummer. I usually get one every year and keep them like old yearbooks. This year the programs seem to mirror the programs that UK is now using for their games. The new ones are a waste.

Regarding the "stale atmosphere," would it help to move it back to Louisville in the YUM for a few years? I believe UL will be hosting an NCAA Women's Regional or Subregional in 2012 so that could be a conflict. I imagine, though, it is too late to move 2012 and maybe even 2013 or beyond. The YUM needs the money or at least to cut expenses, per newspaper articles.

If it goes back to L-ville it will really be a stale atmosphere because they crowd will really be down. I know that I won't attend it. No offense to L-ville but every year that is was there the crowds were really down.
