The biggest complaint I heard was that very, very few of the games were entertaining.

I have heard many, a sample of some -

 

1 - Programs, small, doesn't include all the records like previous and cost $5.

 

2 - Time/date - some have mentioned there is no need for The Sweet 16 to be played at the same time as the 1st Rd. of the NCAA. It hurts attendance BAD.

 

3 - Highlight video before title game. I see some peoples point. Video is meant to pump you up....this year just added to the boring/mopy feel of the tournament.

 

Anyone agree/disagree or have any others?

 

1. Keep in mind the cost of ink/printing has absolutely skyrocketed in the last 12 or so years. The biggest reason newspapers are struggling to survive has less to do with internet sources, than it does with the cost of buying ink, and then possibly printing. I don't condone the smaller program, but I can understand it.

 

2. Is a Title IX issue. It's Federal Law, you can't mess with it. Girls tournament has it's turn going first, next year will start a cycle of boys tournament going first.

 

3. I didn't see them, so I can't comment. This is the one that seems most likely on the KHSAA to me, just based on what I've heard.

The KHSAA has spent way too much on that state of the art building and hall of fame that they occupy. Had to cut costs somewhere.

 

Building has been paid off for at least a couple of years so it has no impact on today's annual revenues/expenses of the KHSAA. State of the art? Certainly not the case now and I question whether it was state of the art at the time it was built. Nothing fancy or extravagant at all in the building from my perspective. As for the Hall of Fame, if I recall properly it is not financed at all from the KHSAA's general revenues and accordingly plays zero role in any need for the KHSAA to cut costs elsewhere.

The games were boring. However, Sweet 16 needs new promotion or sponsors. It hasnt changed at all hardly in last 15 years(shooting contest, Army man, Flavorich, Shooting t-shirts). No music, during TO's or between games. I would have loved to seen fan cam on the Trinity student section. As a fan in between games is boring for 25 minutes. I would love to see the tournament in the YUM Center at least every 3 or 4 years. Dont think it would work every other year but The sweet 16 needs new promotion.

I'm a little confused on this one. It's federal law that the boys' tournament almost always goes second or that they're supposed to take turns? Or that they're supposed to be during the NCAA Tournament? The boys' tournament has been played second (and thus during the NCAA Tournament) for the last 6 years and after next year's hiccup the subsequent 3 years (and probably longer - that's just the furthest they've put dates out). I'm not really sure how Title IX would play into this one.

 

The current rules found here state this:

 

Girls - Board of Control policy as of this date is to play this tournament, unless venue conflicts exist, during week preceding the NCAA Mens’ First Round Tournament Week

OK. I thought you were being serious and didn't want false info out there. Dues vary based on the size of the school. I think this is the current structure:

 

0-400 students - $800 per year

 401-610 students - $1,000 per year

 611-899 students - $1,200 per year

 Over 899 students - $1,400 per year

None of the membership dues goes to the Hall of Fame unless something has recently changed. Dawahare (the family) still contributes financially towards the HOF banquet and there is some special revenue dedicated to the Hall of Fame Museum, although I can't recall the source off the top of my head as it's now been a while since I was on the BOC. I know that the KHSAA solicits contributions specifically for the HOF. I don't think there is a specific amount set aside every year for the HOF Museum. More a matter of what is available and what needs to be done as I recall. By the way, Mr. Dawahare is a fine gentleman and a class act.

 

The building itself was supposed to have some hvac/electrical work done to it to make it more energy efficient. The energy savings was supposed to cover the cost of the renovation in a relatively short recapture time period. Don't know if that's what you saw. The Hall of Fame area did have some new flooring put down but that's been done for a while. It looks like the boys state tournament will be played march 6-9, 2013. It also looks like the SEC tournament will be played in Nashville on March 14-17. If this is the case then the state tournament will be played during the last week of the college regular season. Is it odd that the NCAA tournament will be starting that late in March? I guess it would start March 21, 2013.

Oh, and by the way, I did not like the condensed version of the Sweet 16 program. Had and awesome time though!

I agree with all the complaints regarding the Sweet 16. Lots Lots more could be done to make this an attractive and interesting event to attend. Need new new ideas and updated ideas and more more give aways during the games. And better entertainment inbetween the games. There are some very very talented students in our state that I think could be showcased between the games. I don't have the ideas of exactly what or how to do this, but I think there is a LOT that could be done to improve the atmosphere at the Sweet 16. I have attended the tournament for years and yes...it seems to be less and less interesting each year.

 

I agree even the fan cam and the video highlights were boring boring and music was boring boring this year.

 

I think new promoters must be brought in to revive this tournament and bring new life to it.

Well, I have no real complaints and wasn't bored. I got to watch the Davis kid from Knott Co Central and was so impressed with his play and all he has endured.

 

I also watched a kid that was playing at the Y last year, and this year was playing in the state tourney and fulfilled a wish come true for him...."Taylor Howard".

 

Witnessed the gusty play of the Southwestern team.

 

Witnessed the GRC team that wasn't even supposed to win thier region, but did so with defense, unselfish play and heart.

 

Watched a sub, Thacker from Rowan Co, come off the bench and have a fanstatic game and tourney.

 

I got to watch some of the best talented Freshman the state has to offer.

 

 

Watched Dieudonne, and the whole Trinity team show why they had been ranked #1 all season.

 

These are some of the things I will remember from this state tourney. Won't remember the music or between game entertainment..not what I come to see.

I feel the overall complainig was a result of the lack of overall talent playing in this tourney. I have been going since 1986 and i do believe this was as down as i have seen it. Hope we see things pick up in the near future.
