article 14th Region Week 4 Review: A New #1 Emerges and a First Ever loss

We’re in the middle of December, which means tournament time, holiday tournaments that is, meaning that few region games will be played. We saw two of the top teams go to war with each other last week as a new #1 emerged in the 14^th region.

 

 

1. Breathitt County (5-3): What a week it was for coach John Noble and his Breathitt County Bobcats as they picked up a big region win. Breathitt County traveled to Hindman to take on the Knott County Central Patriots in a 3 vs. 1 matchup and what a game it was, as it should be when two top teams go at it. Breathitt County would prevail 81-67 over the Patriots, leap frogging them to the #1 spot in this week’s 14^th region rankings. Breathitt County traveled to Rowan County to participate in the Rowan County KY Bank challenge, they would play West Carter. West Carter would pull out a thrilling 69-66 victory over the Bobcats.
   

 

Breathitt County will head to Freeport Florida to participate in the Hilton Sandestin Beach Blowout. They will open up tournament on December 27^th at 9 AM against White Plains Alabama.

 

 

1. Knott County Central (5-3): The Patriots had one lone game last week, in a heart breaking 81-67 loss to the Breathitt County Bobcats which ended up in movement at the top of the region rankings.
   

Knott County Central will head to London to participate in the Dribble Drive Challenge at South Laurel.

 

 

1. Perry County Central (5-4): Perry County Central had a rough week last week going 1-2 in the Prestonsburg holiday tournament. Perry Central was dealt their first ever loss to Johnson Central 78-68. Perry Central would play Shelby Valley the very next day and that would be a loss as well, 78-71. Perry Central would bounce back and defeat the host school, Prestonsburg 62-42 to pick up their lone week last week.
   

Perry County Central will head to Orlando Florida this week to participate in the Rock Holiday classic. They will open up with McGill-Toolen Alabama.

 

 

1. Hazard (9-3): The Bulldogs had a good week last week, going 3-1. They got thing started off with a 79-64 win over Leslie County. They headed to Gatlinburg Tennessee to participate in the Smokey Mountain Classic. They dropped a close one to South Greene Tennessee 59-58 but bounced back and picked up two straight wins over Bath County 54-36 and Central Virginia 51-40.
   

Looks like Hazard’s next game is set for January 3^rd at home against Cordia.

 

 

 

1. Letcher County Central (7-2): The Cougars had a good week as well. Picking up two wins including a 52-49 win over arch rival, Cordia. That was Letcher County Central’s first win over Cordia since 2016/17 season. The Cougars hosted Bardstown’s Thomas Nelson in their Pine Mountain Classic (not the tournament Pineville hosts) and the Cougars would come out on top 67-59. Letcher County Central has already matched their win total from last season.
   

Letcher County Central will head to Daytona Beach Florida this week to participate in the Sunshine Classic. They will open up with Breckinridge County on December27th at noon.

 

 

1. Buckhorn (7-4): The Wildcats are having a good season. They’re just two wins shy of last season’s win total. They should pass that with flying colors. With that said, they had a good ween last week going 3-1, picking up wins over June Buchanan 68-59, Berean Christian Tennessee 64-38 and Russell County 51-47. Their lone loss coming to North Forsyth Georgia 63-53.
   

Buckhorn will be at home this week hosting the Buckhorn Lake Christmas Classic. They will open up with the Corbin Home School team.

 

 

1. Cordia (1-10): The Lions are having a rough season, winning just one game which was a 67-63 win over Piarist School. Cordia has dropped 7 straight since that win including last week’s total meltdown. They took a 52-49 heart breaking loss to arch rival, Letcher County Central. They then took it on the chin in all of their games in the Prestonsburg holiday tournament, losing 85-33 to Knox Central, 69-62 to Johnson Central and 74-61 to Shelby Valley. One thing is for sure, with the schedule Cordia has, they will only have a few changes to pick up some wins.
   

 

Cordia will travel to Hazard to take on the Bulldogs on January 3^rd.

 

 

1. Wolfe County (3-6): Wolfe County continues to struggle getting things going. They picked up an 18 point road win at Estill County but turned around and was dealt to big losses in the Louisville Collegiate holiday classic. St. Francis 61-58 and Louisville Collegiate 84-66.
   

Wolfe County will be at home this week on Wednesday hosting another Louisville school, Holy Cross at 5:30 PM.

 

 

1. Powell County (3-6): The Pirates picked up three straight district wins, all three by double digits. Lee County 91-51, Estill County 73-51 and Owsley County 58-41. Powell County took to the road to Rowan County over the weekend to participate in the KY Bank Challenge. They would play Rowan County. It wouldn’t turn out like last season with a Pirate victory, instead it turned out to be the complete opposite as the Vikings rolled to a 63-46 victory over the Pirates.
   

Powell County heads down route 11 to Mt. Sterling to participate in the Gateway Holiday Classic this week. They open up with Middlesboro on Friday at 7:30 PM.

 

 

1. Leslie County (1-7): The Eagles and newly head coach, Justin Rice are having a rough season so far. They’ve dropped 6 straight since their win over Pike County Central, all by double digits. Last week they dropped 3 straight. 79-64 to Hazard, Middlesboro 69-41 and Thomas Nelson 77-61.
   

Leslie County will head back to Letcher County Central on January 4^th.

 

 

1. Estill County (2-8): Despite picking up their second win on the season, 76-27 win over Lee County, the defending 14^th region champions are still getting destroyed in their games, which is not a good sign.
   

 

 

1. Owsley County (5-4): For a school the size of Owsley, they are having a good year. They’ve picked up wins over teams that they lost to last season, including picking up a big win over Menifee County who defeated Powell County on the Pirates own home floor earlier this season. If they play their cards right they very well could be playing for a district championship and making a region tournament appearance.
   

 

 

1. June Buchanan (3-7): The Crusaders have played some tough opponents so far this season and have managed to slip in a few wins along the way.
   

 

 

1. Lee County (2-8): Despite picking up two wins this season, which is better than they had last season, they are still getting destroyed in every game. This year maybe a loss for the Bobcats already but 2019-20 season looks to be a promising year for Lee County.
   

 

 

1. Riverside Christian (0-0): Still no games so far for Riverside.
   

Just now seeing that they are all numbered 1 instead of 1-15. That's not right. Wonder what happened? They were numbered 1-15 on word.
