Please excuse my lack of knowledge of Trinity assistant coaches but can you enlighten us as to Coach Coverdale and the comment of "we saw what happened to him"?

Does Coverdale have any head coaching experience? Maybe this would be a good step to coming back when Beatty leaves? Honestly, if ( and I mean if) the list of candidates to replace Redman or Beatty were Coverdale, Ty Scroggins, and or Coach X with state championships under his belt, who would you choose?

Officiating? There wasn't much there to call. Pretty clean game overall. Now you hit a nerve. Was it the contact below the waist call? Right call. Pass interference? right call. Late hit-personal foul- right call. Trinity jumping offsides? See my previous post about coaching.

I think the success at both schools would continue regardless of the coach based on a) the feeder system going into the schools, b)the facilities and weight rooms, c)the enrollment versus other 6A schools, d)tradition and success based habits being passed on. I will agree to disagree about Trinity being outcoached in 2009. Here is a couple of points that I saw in the final game. If you have a younger, inexperienced team, you may want to trim down the play book and take out the rush to the line and hurry the snap to cut back on false starts. Yes you want the advantage of not giving St X the time to adjust to the formation but if the personnel can't get set and execute, isn't that a coaching item? With the talent that James Quick possesses, you still need your WR to block on other plays. Starting a freshmen that can be described as one dimensional made the quick screens very defendable for Daylen Hall and other X dbs. T rushed for a zillion yards in the semifinals but they lined up in the shotgun for the first 4th and 1 in the final. Yes they made the first down by throwing a quick screen for a gain of 2. IMVHO, Trinity abandoned the running game WAY too quickly and threw their chances for success on the shoulders of Kragthorpe and trick plays on a cold night. Incomplete passes gave the ball right back to St X's offense. Shortening the game isn't sexy but you have to second guess what if?

Thanks for catching that but when the referee makes that "signal", do you think most fans think snap infraction, simulating the start of a play, or illegal formation? I would guess most think illegal procedure.

Thank you Ram for the question. I am no longer on the field but let me jump in about a couple of things referees look at in relation to the neutral zone. Definition: The area between the two lines of scrimmage, stretching from sideline to sideline. The neutral zone is also used a lot in determining scrimmage kick situations as to did the kick go past the neutral zone, forward pass limitations, illegal downfield penalties, and free blocking zone rules. Let me address some of the mechanics that some crews use in addressing lining up in the neutral zone. Many crews use the "from the ball out" way of splitting up the jurisdiction between the linesman and the line judge. So the line judge will call encroachment and illegal procedure and illegal motion and false starts on his/her side of the ball to the sideline and the linesman will take the opposite side. That way, the closest referee can see all the way to the ball. From the opposite sidelines, many times it looks like the WR is off or in the neutral zone. Our mechanic out wide is not to say if a WR is "good" but rather placing your foot on the line of scrimmage and saying here is the line since we don't know if he is supposed to be on the line or off of the line. That's where the punchback signal to indicate whether the wide guy is on the line or off in the linesman's or line judge's view. Now the wide referees can go through their series of checks, do we have 11 players, do we have late/illegal substitution, do we have 7 on the line, do we have any covered up inelgibles, etc. A couple of things that makes the view tough are fields that aren't completely straight due to manual marking off the yard lines, rain and mud erasing the lines, and the multiple sets that offenses are now using. When a team is using multiple shifts, motions, and unbalanced lines causes multiple things to watch. Add to that the offensive lines inability to line up straight ( airplane alignment) gives the appearance of a neutral zone. The center is on the ball, the guards may be a foot back but still breaking the plane of the center and then we have the largest people on the field, the offensive tackle still back further. Is he breaking the plane of the centers hips, yes, but he is another foot back from the guards. The defensive tackle sees the offensive tackle 2 feet back so he creeps up into the neutral zone. Yes he has the ball to line up against but he sees 3 yards of space between him and the offensive tackle. Remember that the tackle is usually the largest person and from the sideline, you may not be able to see the guard or the center. At this time you ( as the linesman) are counting helmets, knowing the snap is eminent, now the flanker goes in motion away so you are tracking him and a coach gets in your ear about the defensive end on the other side of the line is in the neutral zone. The coach gets little or no response and gets frustrated. The coach can now a) scream at the official b) ask the official to check with partner across the other side to see if he/she sees anyone in the neutral zone. My guess is b) would get you the better reaction.

Some great points in this discussion. I like the comments from the Cincinnati St X coach that gave the nod to Highlands in quickness on both sides of the ball. He would know. Comparing just the Cincy St X game is a little myopic IMVHO. X and Highlands had 5 common opponents. Boone County, Manual, Ryle, Cincy St X and Cov Catholic. Lou St X had a lot of success against the NKY teams but struggled against Cincy St x and Manual. Beating Cincy St X in a schedule of St Ig, St Eds, Moeller, Elder, Colerain, etc. From the Cincy St X point of view, could the one game in KY not at a college field, that you've had a great amount of success against, could the Highlands game or maybe Lasalle be the one game you overlook the opponent? Take a look at not only who Cincy St X plays but where they play. Highlands has a nice field but is it as good as Nippert? Overall, my heart agrees with the highschool sports 28-27 score. But Highlands went 2-0 against out of state and Lou St X went 0-1, Trinity went 0-3, Boone County went 0-1, Manual went 0-1, Cov Catholic went 0-1, Simon Kenton, Ryle, etc didn't play anyone out of state so on the basis of advancing KY high school football the most, my head votes for Highlands. But if HIghlands wants to maybe settle this in years to come on the field....Alan Donhoff's number is in the book.

The 6 A final was pretty clean. Pass interference call was pretty obvious and the blocking below the waist on the Trinity defense was a great call. The Trinity defender went at the St X blockers legs. I didn't get a good look at the personal foul penalty against T's defense against BB. I don't personally like the split crews between regions but they've been doing that for a number of years. They work the 3rd round together and then the state finals.

Then tell these seniors that it is okay, that the Bowling Green event is a part of life and growing up and sometimes they are going to fail. Sometimes it isn't about winning. There's a thread about Trinity being the team of the decade-no doubt- but so was Florida and the last impression of Florida is Tim Teboe bawling his eyes out. I hope that these seniors become better people than those with rings.

Funny, I only care about the kids and what they do after high school. Will they be life champions and be good fathers and husbands? I hope and pray that their life is not defined and determined by what happens on a cold night in December 5, 10, 20 years ago but rather by the people that touch their lives-some of them being Coach Glaser and Coach Beatty. There are many great people on both sides of this rivalry but bringing up 1968 as means of superiority seems a bit shallow.

Didn't see the gesture but Mike Glaser has been going out on the field for about 27 years welcoming in the scoring offense to the sideline. The Tigers were issued a sideline warning penalty during the game. Really, maybe the Rock players and Rock fans should of been watching the elgible receivers rather than the sideline. Ditto Xtiger but I will save my comments about Coach G for another thread. The game itself played out as I thought, Trinitys inability to run the ball after the first drive, turnovers, and special teams. I was impressed again by Brad Kragthorpes ability to avoid the sack and get out of pressure. Once again, I was impressed with Trinitys ability to get to the finals and Coach Beattys ability to will the Rocks back into position for number 20. Trinity runnning game:When you line up in 4th and 1 in shotgun, then you are conceding that you know you can't run for the first down so it became a 7 on 7. Trinity is credited with 27 runs but some of those are scrambles for 80 yards. The inability of the "best" athlete on the field to do the simple task of blocking allowed St Xs CB to come up and stop the run and the screens. That's why he is a freshmen. Make 1 good play, mess up on the next 3. He will be good if he continues to play FB. Turnovers Trinity 3, St X 0 The pick at 14-10 I think was the biggest as it was in St X territory with a chance to take the lead. Special Teams The KO returns back to midfield and the THS short punts put St X in short field situations in the second half. Yes the fake FG is icing but thats the second TD on a FG in a state game in 3 years so until Trinity decides to stop it, I am sure St X will run it again and keep it in the game plan. By the way, great venue. Keep it there not just because X won but think of Louisville being in the same position as Univ of Cincinnati yesterday and playing a Big East deciding game at Papa Johns. Can U of L say they won't ever host a meaningful game on that Saturday? I hope not. Congrats Tigers on the journey.

I think that there are a few other people that work behind the scenes really hard to make the broadcast a top notch program. The research that both of those individuals do during the week separates them from the normal high school volunteers sometimes scanning multiple websites throughout the country. Another thing is they are not afraid to call it as they see it, whether it is a penalty call for the Tigers that is unjustified or that the Tigers are bein outplayed.

Are you talking about the Trinity stat page from previous years? I loved it and it showed alot of good stuff. Is it gone now? It was as good as any college stat program out there, if fact, I think it used the same software. THS did a great job on that site. I thought they had a site for pictures of the game also. Greenwood Gators had a listing of their games on their site that you could watch the video on every game this season if you wanted. Pretty impressive but back to the thread

Yes he did, maybe more. But he is a senior and he kicked in the regular season game and he kicked in the playoffs last year and he kicked in the playoffs in 2007. If you go back further, he kicked a field goal at St Martha in the playoffs in overtime to beat St Gabriel in 8th grade. No one besides the Scott County kicker( wow!) can match up. If you look at that X will move the ball and Trinity will move the ball and everything on O and D is even, then turnovers, field position, and special teams decide this game. I believe that Scott County came very close to a couple of punts. Trinity has had a long line of established kickers including Tydlacka and Bironas. If the kickoffs don't reach the endzone, then look out for Mcmurray and Hall. I have seen a lot of teams and playing on turf with Mcmurray and Hayden and Hall have just All in all, this will be a classic and I look forward to it. I look forward to playing at WKU and hopefully St X can come out on top.

How is this thread related? One thing not discussed is Trinity's running game against X's run defense. In the regular season game the running game was non-existent and believe it or not, Trinity became one dimensional. Brad Kragthorpe had a great first half, something like 18 for 20 for over 200 yards but TRAILED? Can you expect him to have a better game passing? Better than 18-20? Will Coach Beatty abandon the run like he did against the Indianapolis team, Cincy St X, Lexington Catholic, and Lou St X? As Coach Pitino says, Tim Philips isn't walking through that door. Here's the thing- I have watched teams throw against Lou St X but you have to run the ball into the end zone. Or kick the FG.... Which brings up another point- replacements at both punter and kicker midway through the season and lets also remember that WKU are college goalposts. Wyatt Gray has at least kicked at Papa Johns goal posts for 4 games that I know of, possibly more. No one at Trinity has ever even attempted a field goal post in a game at 18 foot wide posts, not the 23 foot 4 inches of high school. That could be pivotal in a close game.

Super You bring up a great point. It is the game that the Tigers need. Had it been Scott County or Henry Clay, St X wouldn't have the same emotion. But it is Trinity, the bully on the block. I wouldn't agree with the term "mauled" describing the regular season matchup but I will admit not a lot of Trinity fans saw the end of the game. Here's a few things to consider as I look at this game- 1) Trinity went 2-3 away from the friendly confines of Marshall Field including lackluster performances against Ballard and Lex Catholic. 2) With a couple more votes, Trinity will be the favorite, an unusual position for the Rocks. In years past, it was higher than 60% in the St X favor 3) In previous years, Coach Beatty and staff were able to put in wrinkles for the finals because he had a senior led team. With a talented team but full of underclassmen, the adjustments may not be as plentiful. 4) Kragthorpe is on fire completion wise and Bishop had a monster game last Friday. Trinity has shown its ability to run or pass to win a game. Trinity's inability to run the ball in the regular season game led to their downfall.St X has shown its ability to run. 5) St X has seen a pretty impressive list of players along the playoffs, with MIles Simpson of Simon Kenton, Trenton Fugate of Ryle, Mkente of Greenwood. Keeping players under wraps will be important for both teams. 6) Trinity's defense has not given up more than 14 points since the regular season matchup against X. 7) turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Whoever has the least will win. St X had 7 fumbles last week and 3 were lost unofficially. 8)Trinity has never beaten St X in Bowling Green. Okay they never have played St X but it will be a different scenario for the state. With change in venue comes possible change in outcome!
