Well, luckily for your hypersensitive sense of justice, SL's sports teams don't lose as much as they win - by a long shot. Look at the 2004-05 school year: Boys state champions - basketball. Enough said. Girls V-ball, BB (Final Four), and SB state tournaments Baseball - Region qualifier Football: State Playoffs, 4A Boys Soccer: Elite 8 This year: Football 9-3 record, playoff win Basketball: Boys Sweet 16 again, 4th time this decade. Girls: Region semis Volleyball: Region semis (not sure about this) Boys Soccer: Elite 8 for 2nd straight year Who is your team? You probably don't have the guts to tell us. No matter - I am sure that school's fans are of about the same quality. Some have class, some don't. Some make excuses, some don't. I think you're just jealous of SL's success. Have a nice day.

Don't single out SL for that - every sports team that ever competed had fans that acted that way. KY HS basketball is no different, especially in the 13th region. I still hear complaints about the officiating in the 2004 SL-Corbin football game.

Well said, Les. Glaring lack of team play, I am not sure why. All of these guys are smart enough to realize they won't get very far unless they all are involved offensively. Defense is playing well, though, and that has been the saving grace for SL this season. They will see a great deal of zone come tourney time, in my opinion. Somebody needs to step to the front and lead this team back to Rupp. Go Cards!!!

For South Laurel, the following MUST improve and take on larger roles: Kyle Cochis - WR Miles Keith - DB Chad Nolan - OL/LB Logan Baker - WR Jeremy Armfield - OL/DL Brad Nolan - OL/DL Blake Fields - LB Wes King - WR/DB Phillip Hibbard - DL Jeff Ledford - OL I am sure there are others, these come to mind. Won't be long until spring practice!!!

If you mean Cory Brown, he was a senior last year. Returning players who started or played significant time last year: QB: Rick Bowling WR: Kyle Cochis, Terry Bingham, Logan Baker, Ty Proffitt (?) RB: Randy McQueen, Cody Quinn OL: Phillip Hibbard, Jeff Ledford DL: Randy McQueen, Phillip Hibbard LB: Jeff Ledford, Chad Nolan DB: Cody Quinn, Miles Keith, Terry Bingham PK: Nick Ellington/Proffitt, P: Cody Quinn, SN: McQueen Obviously, the OL and DL will be the most concerning areas. SL will have to have some other players step up as starters and/or subs this year in order for the Cards to be successful in 2006. In addition to all the talent lost, SL lost a great deal of leadership in the '05 seniors. The talent is there, but the Cards will be inexperienced and young, especially at the start of the season. Look for some new players to have a chance to earn playing time. Proffitt returning to the team in '06 could make an impact in all three phases of the game. He could be a dominant receiver if he comes back out.

My mistake on the M'boro game - was there another close game they lost that I was thinking of? Shelby Co., maybe?

About Whitley County - while there will be a transition period to the new offense and coaching style of Coach Gentry and his staff, the WC program is not that far down. In the past few seasons, WC has run the I, Power I, wing-t, and wishbone, but the offense has always been run-oriented. Moreover, the players know how to work hard and win (thanks to Coach Campbell), and everyone seems to forget that they were very close to an 8-2 record last season, losing close games to Breathitt, M'boro, GRC, and SL. If they win those two close district games, WC would have been the #2 seed and Coach Campbell might still be the coach. The margin between winning and losing can extremely small.

The last two off-seasons the talk on this board has been about all that SL has lost to graduation (remember people questioning how SL could replace Karr and Riley after 2004, or Lee after 2003?), and each year they have had very good seasons (7-4, 9-3). SL will surprise people this season as well. The QB Bowling and six other players who either started or saw extensive action last season return. The injuries SL suffered during the season in 2005 actually helped build depth and experience for 2006. On defense, Ledford, Bingham, Quinn, Keith, McQueen, and Hibbard are all returning starters - and Chad Nolan was a quality backup last year at LB. While it is unclear whether or not Ty Proffitt will play next year, if he does play, SL will have 6 outstanding skill players. Imagine Bowling's improvement after a year of growth, weights, and an off-season without splitting practiuce reps. SL will not have the depth on either side of the ball they had last season, and there will be questions on the OL, but the outlook is still very good. Young players like Blake Fields, Chad Nolan, Brad Nolan, Brian Roark, and Wes King will all have a chance to make a difference. Another fact that is lost on some people is the quality staff SL has. This will be the 5th season that virtually the entire staff is intact. The only changes have been the return of former assistants Chris St. John and Chad Hicks.

The 12th region favorite is now playing in the 13th.

No - you're not right. I am a SL fan - I was just poking fun at a certain basketball coach in the area and repeating what I have heard - you must have missed the extreme sarcasm in my post. The SL players won't make any excuses or accept those made for the team by others - that's why they are the state champs. This loss to MC is just a one game. South will be at the big show in Rupp come March and will represent the SL community very well, no doubt. BTW, I went to Hard Knocks U.

Blame it all on the SL football coach. If Riley and Proffitt hadn't played football, SL would be undefeated right now. Now that's a good excuse for SL. :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: p.s. The increase in gas prices this year is the football coach's fault too.

Randy Leger left coaching to enter administration and spend more time with his family - on his own terms. Get your facts straight before you use the phrase "got the ax" in reference to someone leaving a position.

We are talking about HS kids here - please be careful about personal or family related comments. The player in question is a great kid, still in school at SL, and is NOT the source of these rumors. It was an unfortunate situation for him last year that was not of his making. One other point - SL QB's are told to slide or get out of bounds by the coaches - neither QB is afraid to run over somebody.

Hibbard plays on the DL, not LB, but Ledford is the real deal.

Corbin Times-Tribune reported today that Mike Campbell is running for Juedge Executive in Whitley County.

Based on what was said by the players in the article, the resignation was not on his own terms.

HC kept their starters in and tried to score more points to get a running clock - hence the onsides kick up 43-18.

The KFCA member schools did vote for POY and COY to be announced at the state finals, but not until after the season do the coaches vote for all-district teams.

Coaches have voted in District 8 yet on All-District teams

South Laurel would have something to say about that.

As good as Rod Johnson is, his O-Line must be a lot better than "horrible" for him to rush for over 1500 and the QB to rush for over 500. You don't average the yards and points that the Devils do without a great offensive line.

I agree it would be an upset, but I believe the Cards are capable of it.
