South Laurel 2006

Featured Replies

A lot of new face's and a few fimiliar one's for the cards this year. How does everyone think that South will do considering all the holes that must be filled? South graduates 14 starters from the team.

Personally I think that south will be alright but not the same caliber that the cards were last year. Then again I could be wrong. What is everyone's thought's on the 2006 season.

I will predict a winning season and go to playoffs. Who are going to be the key players besides Bowling and Brown?

If you mean Cory Brown, he was a senior last year.

Returning players who started or played significant time last year:

QB: Rick Bowling

WR: Kyle Cochis, Terry Bingham, Logan Baker, Ty Proffitt (?)

RB: Randy McQueen, Cody Quinn

OL: Phillip Hibbard, Jeff Ledford

DL: Randy McQueen, Phillip Hibbard

LB: Jeff Ledford, Chad Nolan

DB: Cody Quinn, Miles Keith, Terry Bingham

PK: Nick Ellington/Proffitt, P: Cody Quinn, SN: McQueen

Obviously, the OL and DL will be the most concerning areas.

SL will have to have some other players step up as starters and/or subs this year in order for the Cards to be successful in 2006. In addition to all the talent lost, SL lost a great deal of leadership in the '05 seniors. The talent is there, but the Cards will be inexperienced and young, especially at the start of the season. Look for some new players to have a chance to earn playing time. Proffitt returning to the team in '06 could make an impact in all three phases of the game. He could be a dominant receiver if he comes back out.

That is how deep their receiving corp was this year. They lose a stud like Marcum, another solid receiver in Philpot, aren't sure about Proffitt just yet, but still have 3 other experienced WR's coming back (all those named will be seniors). Plus, you know they have some younger talent ready to step up in 2006.

I think they will miss Brown, but not for long as Quinn showed some real flashes and by season's end, he will be very solid. McQueen is more of a big power back, but has deceptive speed for a big guy. Ledford will be the anchor on defense. Smart kid.

I agree that the line will be a concern early, but they will find a way to get it done. With the coaching staff being very non-transient, that will help in developing the younger kids to be ready to step up.

The wildest part is that the district will be wide open. Madison Central lost a load of talent and should be in rebuilding mode. They had their armor knicked with their first district loss in 3 seasons when many thought they were the favorite to win the region. GRC probably brings back a higher percentage of their talent than everyone else and will probably be the favorite to win the district. Lincoln brings back quite a few kids as well. North adjusted to their injuries, but did so late in the season, and the good news is that most of those kids who had to step up, will be back so they should be an improved squad in Abbott's 2nd season. Whitley lost a lot in Rider, but has a new coach and some solid young talent returning and will be in the hunt for another playoff spot. Coach Gooch still has an uphill battle at Montgomery, but they did show improvement in 2005, and should take another big step in 2006.

I know that last year when JC played South in the Cumberland Valley Bowl that and South was at full strength that they looked very impressive then South was desimated by injurys. The QB Bowling is a player and looks to have a very bright future in front of him. Does South return some of their recievers? I know that they had a very solid recieving core last year.

They lose Marcum, Philpot and Riley. But they do return Bingham, Cochis, Baker, & probably Proffitt. They will be fine at the WR position. The real questions are on both the offensive and defensive lines where the lost several to graduation. They will miss Marcum badly as he was the go to guy who could break a big play at any time. The other receivers don't have quite that ability, but they are very solid and should be able to spread the ball out to several different players.

Is Ty Proffitt even playing football this season? I just haven't heard if he is.

No. He's been concentrating on healing up nagging injuries from basketball, which kept him out of baseball this past spring, and focusing entirely on hoops.

Super, I just hadn't heard. Hope he heals up fast and gets it going this fall. Enjoyed watching him play against the NCH gang (circus) in Frankfort last season. Nothing but the best for him I wish. Showed those Cincy boys that they do play BB in the state of Kentucky

I watched the South game against Mercer. They are not close to the same team that they were last year. The biggest difference was in the line. The line did not play well at all. South's team from last year would have played Mercer a lot closer and possible won. Bowling is still impressive no matter who is around him.
