Last time I checked close doesn't count either. When was the last sweet sixteen that Ashland won? Before most of us were born. Those that live in glass houses......

If it is a case where it is close I think most kids would like to hear why the decision was made instead of just being left to wonder and maybe even doubt themselves. If its a case where there was a big difference in talent then I think most of those kids understand why they were cut. Its a burden for a coach to make these kinds of decisions but it is something they should have known before taking a position where kids lives are influenced. That said the coach should use common sense and go on case by case basis. Even if it is difficult and time consuming.

Russell could win it all or they could go out early. Its a very difficult path to a championship. They could have consecutive games with Mason County, Breathitt County and Belfry. All of that before they would get to Louisville.

Basketball.

He could barely move the first time these teams played. Only a few plays on defense and that was mostly for leadership. Hopefully the week off has given that ankle time to heal up a little bit.

I just went through a situation where 40 kids were trying out for the 12 spots. The hard thing was it is a very deep class. No real super stars but about 25 kids that could actually play. It was very even. A very tough decision to make. When it came down to who to cut and who to keep I guess it just boiled down to size or what the coach thinks the team needs. All of this means some kids got cut that didn't expect it and could make a valid argument for why they should be on the team. Those last few kids cut really took it hard. They new they were good enough but there were only so many spots. In this case I think those kids at least deserve some sort of explaination instead of just seeing a list and finding out they didn't make it. If for nothing else, ecouraging them not to give up. Granted thats a tough thing for a coach to do but I think the kids that worked there butts off deserve at least that much.

Should be. Two pretty even teams and a bitter rivalry to boot. May be one of the most entertaining first round games in the state.

We used to play an 11 game season and have fewer teams make the playoffs until the change to four teams from each district in the early 90s. Its not going to happen again. Too much money being made by more teams making the playoffs.

Belfry, Breathitt Co, Russell and Sheldon Clark are the top 4 in the latest AP poll. You could make the argument that Louisville Central may be the top team in 3A though. So three of the top 4 are from the mountain region and Russell is in the northeast cornor of the state.
