A good game between to very even teams. Breathitt made the big plays late in the game and moves on. Congratulations to the Bobcats Russell kids should be proud. Sometimes it just doesn't go your way.

That is true. The cushion was there because of the zone coverage. The cornor having the deep third. Mason County did a good job with formations and motion dictating what the safties could or could not do. I do believe that Mason ran a more wide open offense in this game than they did the first time the teams met.

Russell ran no man to man coverage There was always one safety deep and sometimes two. The reason the slant worked so well was it was thrown when Russell was blitzing and there was no one dropping off from the inside and somtimes Mason got them out of position by formations. Sometimes you pick your poison. Russell shut down the Mason running game but did so at the risk of giving up yardage through the air. Cox through the ball well and made the right reads. An example of the coverage was the first TD that Mason scored. Mason ran motion and overloaded a zone against Russell. The CB bit and came up on the short route when he should have had a deep third. Result was #17 was wide open for the TD. Russell never went to man to man coverage.

With replacing as many starter as they had too I would think coach McGlone would be in the running as well. I believe the last three times these teams have played Breathitt has won a state title. I know alot of Russell fans that were around for all of them feel that Russell should have won two of those games. (02,96) Both of those are years when Russell could have had a another state title. Should be another good game this year.

Back to Russell and Breathitt. Two good teams with opposite approaches to the game. It should be interesting to watch.

I never said they don't hit. What I meant is that they are rather small on the line and are not just going to push anybody around. They use speed and quickness to their advantage. I don't think the the argument that they are as big and physical as Russell will hold any water. Just for comparison reagardless of how hard Raceland's back think anybody hits. I do believe Russell held Denton and Carver to fewer yards than LCA and also beat them by three TDs with all the starters playing.

I don't know who the girl was but I finally just gave her a hug so I could watch the game. I think they were having some kind of contest to see who could get the most hugs. Oh well, at least they were friendly.

Russell's style is not flashy. They don't have the big-play RB that they have had for the last several years in Gross and Clark. They do have four guys in the backfield that can all run the ball very well. Not flashy but very effective.

You beat me to that one. Fairview only lost to LCA 21-14. LCA is not nearly as physical a team as Russell.

Russell's offensive line has been very good.

Mason's running game had been a strength for them. They hurt Russell with it the first time and that is what you saw the Russell defense geared to stop IMO. If Mason was going to win they were going to have to pass the ball to do it. Cox is a very athletic QB for them and Pollitt and Thompson although not big backs, run very hard. I think Mason County has been underestimated by almost everyone all season. They returned alot from the previous year when they were in the same class AAA district with Johnson Central in Ashland. They were a very good team this year.

I'm not comparing teams. I'm comparing situations. Russell breezed through the regular season and the playoffs until that point in 2004. Having some tough games under your belt does nothing but help. I think it will be very tight. I hope it ends differently than the last time though.

The "fan" was very closely associated with the Greenup County team.
