Could you post some info about her...size, position, stats?

Having posted one year's assists and steals stats for Rebecca Gray (and would request career totals), I thought it proper to report Queen's and spent a few minutes myself researching some of the following on the KHSAA website. Here again are Queen's stats, with assists and steals added to the figures above, as well as one other interesting tidbit of info: '05-'06: 16.7 pts, 11.3 rebs, 2.5 asst, 3.0 stls '04-'05: 22.7 pts, 11.5 rebs, 3.0 asst, 3.4 stls '03-'04: 24.8 pts, 13.2 rebs, 3.5 asst, 3.1 stls With career totals of 2530 points and 1337 rebounds, she is currently averaging 24.3 pts and 13.4 rebs...a pace which, should she continue (and top 2900 points and 1500 rebounds), would place her in the top 25 all-time scorers in the state's history (something which the Cats Pause article pointed out to be the case with Gray, but failed to mention with respect to Queen) and in the top 10 all-time rebounders as well...something only three other players have ever done...two of which were named Miss Basketball (the third graduating the same year as one of the other winners). I've found all of this quite interesting and can honestly say that at this point, I'm more confused why such things aren't better reported than that Gray is thought of as the clear frontrunner with no close second by most who will have an opporunity to vote. All of this takes far too much focus off on one's team and what it takes to win as a team, but goals and one's individual performance are a part of what young girls think about when they are alone and working at the game they so enjoy and what coaches, moms, dads, friends and fans use to measure and encourage a player. I hope others find it as interesting.

In an attempt to edit my last post, I was timed out and chose not to contact the Administrator. Let me add this: Disregard the partial parenthetical comment on "assists." Such a qualification would have really stretched this discussion. I also wanted to cite one example of my frustration...the Cat's Pause article about the Miss Basketball selection. The writer stated that Rebecca Gray was the clear frontrunner...with no close second...and implied that the selection was a foregone conclusion. He then used her career scoring and rebounding figures as support for her being the frontrunner...which would be the proper thing to do except that Queen's numbers were better at the time...and remain so. I'm no journalist, but I think I would have demonstrated the gap between the numbers of the clear frontrunner and the others being given consideration. The implication was that Gray's numbers were better. The unfortunate aspect of this discussion is that I'm forced to appear that I'm arguing against Gray's selection. I am not. I applaud her accomplishments to date and will offer my congratulations should she be the choice.

Thanks. As regards your first point, I would again suggest that there at least be some attempt to measure such an opinion. For example...and it is rather simple to do...look at rebounds (clearly an indicator of work on "both ends of the floor"), steals and assists (I put this . These stats are kept by most programs. When the impact of rebounding on a team's ability to control the ball is taken into consideration (and how many coaches pull their hair out trying to get kids to make the effort), one can better measure, what I like to call, a player's game productivity. When one compares players, just compare their respective overall game numbers...if for no other reason than to reinforce why it is that coaches teach and coach all aspects of the game...and drill for every skill. Again, this is really overthinking...but truth be told, it takes more time to explain than actually make the comparison. With respect to North Carolina, I don't know what they "feel" and, as you stated, it doesn't speak to the question at hand. What is obvious by their selection is that they wanted a big shooting guard. One could just as easily assume that Middle Tennessee feels the same about Queen...which, by the way, they do...but that is no reason to vote for her over another player.

How does one begin... A number of kids have been ranked "top 10 players for the last 3 yrs." Apart from the obvious that those rankings are themselves usually put together by those who operate summer camps and who have not seen all those about whom they render judgments, there still is very little in the way of objective standards by which to measure different players...and I realize that can't be avoided. Likewise, your own statement that Gray "is the best player this y[ea]r" is without any way to verify or disprove (and I realize I am really overthinking this here, but I'm trying to make a point). Even more telling is your point that "people have been talking about her for her entire V career." Did you really mean to say that? What possible difference could that mean? You do approach some objectivity or at least provide an opportunity to inject some objectivity, whether or not that was your intent, when you deny that there are none with better careers than Gray...which may well be the case. However, the only way to know is to compare careers. I am obviously quite biased...and allow me to remind you that I have already stated that Rebecca Gray would be a fine choice...but I would suggest that Rose Hill's Emily Queen has had as good or better a career as anyone in this year's senior class. Look at her numbers: '05-'06: 16.7 pts, 11.3 rebs '04-'05: 22.7 pts, 11.5 rebs '03-'04: 24.8 pts, 13.2 rebs After 9 games this season, she maintains a 24.3 pts and 13.4 rebs pace. For her career, she has 2530 points and 1337 rebounds...and has helped lead her team to a state Runner-up finish at the Sweet Sixteen...a team which, by the way, used only 6 players (the point of which is to point out the kind of effort required to stay on the floor for 32 minutes). I started another thread in an attempt to compare such statistics and hope there will be some response. To date, there has been none...and it is a bit surprising to me. Even stranger still to me is the fact that, in the case of Queen & Gray, there have been no attempts to match them up. Rose Hill and Scott County both participate at the same venue on two occasions this year (the Shoot for the Cure Shootout and the KY-WV Challenge), but in neither case are the teams matched against one another. What a missed opportunity. It will still be great to see both kids play (as well as Rose Hill's Laura Terry...in my view, the best 3pt shooter in the state), but how nice would it have been to see them go head-to-head. Until and unless there is some minimal attempt to objectify the process, let's be honest about what takes place in the selection of Miss Basketball...it is a popularity contest. It comes down to "people have been talking about her for her entire V career" or those who are fortunate enough to play on the best AAU team during the summer...if they play at all (let me say here how much respect I have for Miss Heaton for what she accomplished during her summers) or who sign "big time D1 scholarships."

I didn't actually speak to the scorer's table. I was making the announcement myself and laughing with several friends who have monitored our give and take on BGP. We all wanted to meet The Walrus.

Two observations, apart from the obvious fine performance of Rose Hill... 1) Dakota Euton displayed incredible maturity this evening, as he was mauled...and that is no overstatement. I saw him get hit three or four times, with elbows, a player coming down on his shoulders with both arms, etc...and in each case, Dakota simply continued to play, turned and hustled down the court and just played the game. What a fine kid with a great career ahead of him. 2) Don't ever wonder again, GoRadio, why people get on officials. I saw the most self-conscious ref I've ever seen this evening (while tonight's performance tops all others, he is always this way). He thought the game was about him. Every call and every antic on his part was a pose. He preened constantly. Rather than quietly tell a kid (the most mild-mannered kid on the court) to leave the court for having his shirttail out, he grabbed the ball, stormed onto the court from behind the basket and yelled the length of the court to the player's coach to "get me another player out here..." When the kid did return to the court and shortly thereafter go to the free throw line, the ref followed him down the court, stood at the foul line and lectured him on why he had to keep his shirt in. Not once did he call out the opposing players for constantly grabbing the kid's shirt and pulling it out of his shorts. The ref sent the player out of the game 3 times during the course of the game because of his shirttail. He was singularly responsible for agitating both the player and the fans for his obvious obsession with one kid's shirttail.

Hey...there you are. I tried to get the announcer to call you to the scorer's table today, but no such luck. Didn't you hear me? I was actually calling for you...when Emily hit the floor!! Today's game was in my view the best that the Emily and Luara have played...together. Laura scored all her points in the 1st quarter and then dished out 7 assists. Emily's 32 and 19 was the kind of game she should have had against Minford. Today's effort was the best use of our size thus far against a team that handled Boyd County's size and strength quite well.

I don't know who she is, but we were able to spend a few minutes with several Minford players (one we've known since she was 10 years old) and they are a good bunch. Not only are they a fine basketball team, but a group of personable and polite young women.

In light of some of today's discussions on other threads, I would like to ask about those players who have or are averaging a double-double. Rose Hill's Senior Emily Queen's career scoring and rebounding stats are as follows: '05-'06: 16.7 pts, 11.3 rebs '04-'05: 22.7 pts, 11.5 rebs '03-'04: 24.8 pts, 13.2 rebs After 9 games this season, she maintains a 24.3 pts and 13.4 rebs pace. For her career, she has 2530 points and 1337 rebounds. I am curious how these figures compare to what others in her class, past players from the state and even younger players have done.

Scott County's Rebecca Gray. Most likely she will win and she would be very deserving, but it does appear that it has been a foregone conclusion in the minds of many for some time and that there has been very little careful and objective consideration given to others.

I haven't seen Heaton play, but I'm very familiar with Hope Brown. If Heaton was that good against Brown, she is a player. Is she a senior? If so, were will she play next year?
