I haven't seen Heaton play, but I'm very familiar with Hope Brown. If Heaton was that good against Brown, she is a player. Is she a senior? If so, were will she play next year?

I don't have a clue. I here she has a bunch of softball scholarships available as well. But have no clue where.

Scott County's Rebecca Gray. Most likely she will win and she would be very deserving, but it does appear that it has been a foregone conclusion in the minds of many for some time and that there has been very little careful and objective consideration given to others.

Scott County's stud. She signed with N.C. as a sophomore. She has definitely had a great career at a great program. I think girls like Heaton are held back and passed over because they don't have tons of help around them year after year. But it should be looked at stat vs. stat, year by year, with many considerations about schedule, teammates, etc.

She is a very solid player but to say she made Hope Brown look average is mistaken. She scored 27 points for a team that got beat by 30 and she got a lot of those with Brown on the bench after the game was sealed. Also, there may have been 2 or 3 possessions when Brown was guarding Heaton. She had a very good night but she did very little, if any, of it against Brown.

 

Does she have any schools after her for basketball? If not, there should be a school somewhere that can use a smart player who has a nice shot.

If Rebecca Gay gets Scott County to the Sweet 16 over Lex Cath in the regional tournament, then this is a no-doubter.

Not so fast. This game was neck and neck other than the 1st quarter which is about the only time Hope or most of their starting five were rotated out for any real amount of time. By the way, thirty is a respectable loss at North Hardin this year, especially when you look at them playing 10-12 players and pressing practically the entire game against a team that has six players with one doing most the work. She was bringing the ball up the floor against the press, setting up the offense, constantly moving to get an open look, and then hitting six 3's while being the only person the entire defense knew they had to stop. Lets not forget, this kid missed 6 of 8 free throws and still scored 27 points. And by the way, I know Hope is a great player. I'm just making sure people open their eyes about Heaton too.

I am sure the forementioned player/s are great players but Gray has been one of the top 10 players for the last 3yrs and is the best player this yr. People have been talking about her for her entire V career. A player just don't come out of nowhere in a season and win this award. There will be several players who have outstanding yrs but not outstanding careers.

I believe the award is Gray's to lose and she has done absolutely nothing to do so. She is a great player on a great team and has been for several years. She deserves the attention she receives.

 

As for the Caldwell-North game, boatman, you stated Heaton made Brown look average. I was simply correcting your view. She did have 27 points and she played 32 minutes. Hope played 20 or so. I would expect her to outscore someone who played 10-12 fewer minutes. Hope is a great player and she does what her team needs her to do. She is not out there to outscore the opposing players. She is there to defend, run the offense and make her teammates better. She does that as well as any player in the state. Talk up your players and they deserve it but don't do it at the expense of some other young athlete.

I agree. Everyone knows that R. Gray has already won the award (it just isn't given out until April) and she has had a super stellar career. Everyone also knows that the Miss/Mr. Basketball award is as political as the Presidential elections too. People start promoting their guy/girl the day they put on a varsity jersey and they are almost always from a school near one of the larger cities in the state. Lets be honest about it, it wouldn't change the Miss Basketball winner if someone from a small school statistically destroyed Rebecca Gray this season. I'm just putting someone's name in the race who unfortunately isn't from a big winning program, who is ridiculously underated because her team has struggled the last several years due to youth, and who toe-2-toe so far has statistically whooped up on five highly ranked players this year. I don't expect her to win but she shouldn't be overlooked based on how many points she has had in her career and how many state championships she has won. Because about 90% of the teams in the state don't ever have that much talent at hand and it is supposed to be a personal achievement award. What do you think is tougher, leading a team of young kids that miss lay-ups under the basket to a 15w/15l season or having a wealth of talent and depth and contributing 20 points a game. It is a shame that very talented kids like Heaton have to play way above the others to even get a mention. Fortunately for her, recruiters don't just read media guides to find their ballers. I hear from good sources that she is receiving attention from a couple D-1 programs. That is extremely impressive considering she has never played summer ball, never been on a state championship caliber team, and only attended 1 or 2 individual basketball camps in her life. She was busy winning softball tourneys all over the map in the summers.

How does one begin... A number of kids have been ranked "top 10 players for the last 3 yrs." Apart from the obvious that those rankings are themselves usually put together by those who operate summer camps and who have not seen all those about whom they render judgments, there still is very little in the way of objective standards by which to measure different players...and I realize that can't be avoided. Likewise, your own statement that Gray "is the best player this y[ea]r" is without any way to verify or disprove (and I realize I am really overthinking this here, but I'm trying to make a point). Even more telling is your point that "people have been talking about her for her entire V career." Did you really mean to say that? What possible difference could that mean?

 

You do approach some objectivity or at least provide an opportunity to inject some objectivity, whether or not that was your intent, when you deny that there are none with better careers than Gray...which may well be the case. However, the only way to know is to compare careers. I am obviously quite biased...and allow me to remind you that I have already stated that Rebecca Gray would be a fine choice...but I would suggest that Rose Hill's Emily Queen has had as good or better a career as anyone in this year's senior class.

 

Look at her numbers:

 

'05-'06: 16.7 pts, 11.3 rebs

'04-'05: 22.7 pts, 11.5 rebs

'03-'04: 24.8 pts, 13.2 rebs

 

After 9 games this season, she maintains a 24.3 pts and 13.4 rebs pace.

 

For her career, she has 2530 points and 1337 rebounds...and has helped lead her team to a state Runner-up finish at the Sweet Sixteen...a team which, by the way, used only 6 players (the point of which is to point out the kind of effort required to stay on the floor for 32 minutes).

 

I started another thread in an attempt to compare such statistics and hope there will be some response. To date, there has been none...and it is a bit surprising to me.

 

Even stranger still to me is the fact that, in the case of Queen & Gray, there have been no attempts to match them up. Rose Hill and Scott County both participate at the same venue on two occasions this year (the Shoot for the Cure Shootout and the KY-WV Challenge), but in neither case are the teams matched against one another. What a missed opportunity. It will still be great to see both kids play (as well as Rose Hill's Laura Terry...in my view, the best 3pt shooter in the state), but how nice would it have been to see them go head-to-head.

 

Until and unless there is some minimal attempt to objectify the process, let's be honest about what takes place in the selection of Miss Basketball...it is a popularity contest. It comes down to "people have been talking about her for her entire V career" or those who are fortunate enough to play on the best AAU team during the summer...if they play at all (let me say here how much respect I have for Miss Heaton for what she accomplished during her summers) or who sign "big time D1 scholarships."
