  1. Which side of the ledger does Cecil scrambling with the ball go on? It was often a pass play, but ended up in a run (often a very effective run). Better question would be "what % of plays were a pass (attempted or completed) of 7 or less yards (swing pass, quick out, TE dump over the middle, drag, curl, etc.)?" I'm guessing less than 10%.
  2. What schools will participate and what grades do they represent?
  3. I heard a rumor that the new CC youth league was only open to public school students. Anyone know if that is true? If so, I'd be interested in the reasons behind that decision.
  4. Interestingly, the story has a KY connection: http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/birthday.asp
  5. 3 of 'em at my house for 2 hours made the filling of 50 bags full of dirt & old mulch and spreading 40 bags of new mulch (bought from and delivered by the Highlands Soccer team) much easier. Good work for a good cause. LN -- tell them there's an additional donation if they'll drop by WED night to drag the 50 bags from the garage to the curb for the Rumpke guys who are going to be thrilled with me this week!!! NOTE: While this was hard work, the coaches were clearly also using it as a "team building" exercise. A coach dropped by during the project to check in and find out specifically what the mentees (underclassmen) had learned about the mentor (upperclassman) and vice versa.
  6. 1981 AA state semi-finals, Bardstown @ Mayfield. The legend Garnis Martin calls a "Georgia pass" (aka "Hook & Lateral") for a Bardstown score in the last few seconds. Few people remember that Bardstown was an A school "playing up" in that era. Bardstown goes on to beat Somerset the next week at Cardinal Stadium.
  7. Anyone have a good link to an accurate summary of Prop 2 as enacted.
  8. Just to clarify...Keith was the QB coach at NCC when he was a teacher at Woodfill elementary school. When Keith accepted the assistant principal job at the middle school for the 2006-2007 school year, he gave up his coaching job at NCC. He was not the QB coach for this year's state champs.
  9. In case you were wondering, it is 271 miles from Hopkinsville to Ft. Thomas. Considering the time change, kickoff should be around 9:30!
  10. Just a question. Under the old playoff format, if teams with the same seeds faced in Week 3 (Regional Final) (e.g., #1 in District A facing #1 in District B), home field was determined by alternating years. If different seeds played in Week 3 (e.g., #1 in District A facing #3 in District B), better seed got home field regardless of the alternating year (in this example, even if it was District B's "turn" to host if both #1s made it to the Regional Final, #1 in District A would host this game). How is home field determined under the new playoff format? Is it straight alternating without regard to seeds? Just wondering. Disregard -- mods, please close this thread. Answer can be found by simple search using "playoff brackets" Sorry for the extra work.
  11. Not sure how you got "sour grapes" from my post, but I commend your creativity.
  12. Presumably happened during or immediately after it.
  13. Keep it to the game, per The Guru Critical Plays: 1 - With 1:06 remaining in the 4th Qtr., HHS gets 1st & Goal at the 1. Clock stops for the 1st down. Once ball is spotted, HHS has 25 seconds to snap the ball. They snap too quick and 0:51 is left on the clock when they kick off. As this game showed, 10 seconds can be a lifetime. (Some would argue that you take a knee for a down or 2 to run clock or make CCH burn TOs. Try to score on next play or 2 and, worst case, kick tying FG on 4th down. I disagree, but the theory is with this strategy you control things with either a later TD or tying FG.) 2 - 2d play of CCH drive, HHS rushes only 2 and drops 9 into coverage. Somehow HHS actually gets pressure on QB and almost sacks him. Somehow with 9 people in coverage against 3 or 4 CCH receivers, Bovard gets open for the big gain. 3 - 3rd & 2ish for CCH on final drive. Quick out to Bovard for the 1st down. Viewing the play live at the game, it looked like Bovard caught the pass with his left knee on the carpet. Upon reviewing using TiVo to get Slo-Mo, it looks like the knee is down, but a lot closer than I thought it would be. he gets up and is able to get out of bounds to stop the clock. Granted, the clock stops for the 1st down regardless, but with the ball out of bounds, CCH can set up as normal rather than having to either burn a TO or rushing to the line of scrimmage to call a play quickly. Couple of seconds could have been very important. Great game. Great setting. Hope 2 weeks is as good a game with a different result. P.S. I certainly hope HHS sends the repair bill for the broken and bent bleachers in the CCH student section to CCH for payment. Didn't necessarily look like anything intentional, just exuberance & lots of jumping up & down during the game I expect.
  14. Sloppy, yes. Horrible, no. Interception, fumble, turnover on downs once or twice, TD called back on penalty, other penalties (ALL in the 1st HALF) qualify as sloppy. Defense lost intensity on the 1 drive where MC scored, but otherwise, played very well. Also, what was up with the door to the locker room being locked so that MC spent the entire halftime in the endzone rather than locker room? It was oppened pretty quickly, but they stayed in the endzone. I guess they wanted to watch the homecoming festivities?
  15. Anyone else notice that this game feature the Dons v. the Cavemen? How bizarre? If you're playing against this team, I guess you tell your center to stand up & block (i.e., no hand on ground) after the long snap AND make sure the officiating crew knows NFHS Rule 2 Section 21 cited by LangerCat above!!!
  16. Good to see the "Georgia Pass" is still in the playbook at Bardstown. It was run to perfection in the closing seconds at Mayfield on the way to the 1981 State Championship. Very possibly the greatest play in Garnis Martin's esteemed coaching career!!!
  17. Sustained Drives: HHS - 2 (10 pts.); Elder - 1 (7 pts.) * - notice that both of HHS' drives were the 1st of the half? * - Elder drove when they went 2 TEs rather than 5 wide; not sure why they didn't stay with that more TOs: HHS - 3 (-14 pts.); Elder - 1 (0 pts.) * - Elder's TO was immediately given back by HHS, so that's a wash * - 1st TO was on JK for not screaming to his WR to get away from the ball; 2d was on JK for trying to do too much; he had already let one go that was downed inside 10 yd. line and didn't want to do it again; was not in good position to field the punt, but wanted to make a big play for the team; still a great player, just 2 critical errors in judgment Better Team Won: You can't take only the good (OL play, Defense, etc.) and claim you're the better team. Your mistakes have to count against you (forced or not) in that analysis. HHS didn't deserve to win b/c they didn't execute in important areas of the game. Elder may not have impressed offensively outside of their 1 drive, but they made only 1 crucial error (fall on the ball already) which was cancelled out by a HHS crucial error on the next play. Attendance: Slightly disappointing. Not sure of the total, but there were plenty of seats between the 20 and 40 on HHS' side. Student section was full and 40 - 50 looked pretty full. Didn't get a chance to see the Elder side, but looked pretty full. I have to believe no one was turned away. Weather certainly played a role. Given that the goal is a state championship, this loss certainly moved HHS closer to that goal than either of the 1st 2 wins. I suspect St. X next week will be a stiffer test, but what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Go Birds.
  18. Agreed. Just looking for some additional data points for this discussion. JLo was Mr. Football Derek's Senior Year. Who won Mr. Basketball that year? P.S. Still looking for where Bush finished in both polls (and Tim Couch for that matter).
  19. Will Dale stop the QB draw this time? I seem to recall Elder used this play with great impact at PBS. (Of course, personnel changes on both sides.)
  20. Where did Bush finish in Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball voting? I know Smith was runner up in both. If you look at it mathematically, Bush would have to have either won both or won 1 and was runner up in the other to oust Smith. Consensus seems to be centering on these 2.
