  1. Guru and I must have been thinking alike. From an earlier post: "As you mention, it's not like the KHSAA was not without detractors before this process. That being the case, doing the "blind draw" in private (even if conducted by a trusted employee) shows that they are either "tone deaf" or don't care what their "customers" and member schools think. Neither is a good result and both are emblematic of an organization that is "too big for its own britches." Given that we've just come from the televised NBA Lottery, I'm sure Riherds, BGP or some BGP sponsor(s) would have paid $ for the backdrop at the press conference wherein the #s were drawn out of a hat. It would be an opportunity for some press coverage in an otherwise "dead" time for the KHSAA and/or football. I suspect the papers would have covered and maybe even a quick video clip on the news in Lexington & Louisville. Missed opportunity in my opinion."

  3. When you say "No way" are you indicating that it is physically impossible for these results to have come from a blind draw? or are you simply saying that you think it is "highly improbable" that these results came from a blind draw? If the latter, "No way" is not the way I would describe it. There's enough controversy here without hyperbole.
  4. I may have missed it, but I got sort of lost in the "name calling" and skipped to the end. Ignore if it's already been suggested: What would be wrong w/ using the new format for RD 1 and RD 2 and then keeping the "random draws" in RD 3 and RD 4 (w/ current geographical limits in RD 3). Example: * - RD 1 & RD 2 determine Playoff District Champion * - RD 3 is randomly drawn before season for the 4 Regions in each 1/2 of the state. E.g., R3D5 (HHS/Cov Cath) could face R3D6 (Lex Cath) OR R4D7 (Rockcastle/Bell) OR R4D8 (Ashland), rather than R3D6 every year. However, R3D5 COULD NOT play the other 1/2 of the state (R1D1 [Hoptown], R1D2 [bG], R2D3 [bullitt East] or R2D4 [boyle]) in Round 3. * - RD 4 is completely random (and possibly neutral site since you can't EARN home field in RD 4 currently). This would allow R3 to play R1, R2 or R4 rather than playing R4 every year. * - RD 5 is 2 teams left standing. POSITIVES - changes things up; doesn't insure a X v. T finals each year; saves even more on travel $ because in RD 3 you stay in your 1/2 of the state NEGATIVES - stale, repetitive district matchups in RD 1 & RD 2; X v. T cannot happen in RD 3, but remains likely for RD 4 or RD 5; potentially longer trips in RD 4; possible mismatches/blowouts in RD 5 Thoughts?
  5. While consistency is important and even a keystone, I think mechanics & knowledge of the rules is just as important. Many coaches I know can live with an official making the wrong call from the right position/angle. What drives them crazy (& should) is the wrong call from a bad position/angle -- particularly if the official is in the bad position/angle because they didn't hustle to get to the right spot. A thorough understanding of the rules is also mandatory. While 99% of the calls are made pursuant to rules EVERYONE knows, you'd be surprised how hairy things can get in that other 1% - inevitably at a critical juncture of the game.
  6. Agreed on all counts. Appeared to me the JV coach was actually turning to the HHS cheering section and complaining about calls. The JV coach "chest bumping" with Ben G before every game is also an unfortunate "line-blurring" between coach and "fan."
  7. Appeared to me the NCC coach and his staff were asking for a technical foul on Ben G for slapping the backboard when he was attempting to block the made shot. Not sure if there is any HS rule which would mandate that, but that seemed to be their initial reaction. Regardless, 3-5' on the court and all the way down to the baseline in a hurry toward the ref will often result in a Technical. Why were there 3 officials tonight? Is that something the teams can ask for? The 3rd official was one of the 2 officials from the JV game.
  8. Tanner Johnson was in foul trouble much of the game, but when he was in, he was not a factor. With his size against smaller opponents, he has to play closer to the basket and want the ball more (like Ben G.). The offense also has to realize if they feed the big man, they'll get it back for open looks when the defense starts collapsing on him. Vories is very quick with a good shot and good moves. I was confused by the D by the 'birds in the 1st half. While it looked like man-to-man, they were switching on everything which made it look like a matchup zone. While the pressure on the ball was good, too often it allowed easy drives, dishes and backdoor cuts. If you're not quick enough to stay in front of a guy off the dribble, you shouldn't guard him so closely 25' from the bucket. Ben G. performs better than his talent warrants. He forces the action and takes the ball to the hoop. This usually leads to a decent shot or a foul on the defense. More of HHS' players should play this way. It will be interesting to see how they develop. If they improve as much as last year's team, they could be dangerous at tourney time.
  9. Congrats. I always heard that AFA had a height restriction which adversely impacted primarily their BBall team. I seem to recall that Ellison was a pretty good-sized kid. Seems to be a disconnect.
  10. What channel & is there any way to view online, get a DVD or otherwise get a copy of the stories?
  11. A Bardstown fan (Garnis Martin era) transplanted to Ft. Thomas, so I keep track of them only through BGP and the parents. Expect a heckuva game!!!
  12. 1981 -- the year of the "Georgia Pass" (hook & lateral). Steve Ritchie (QB) passes to David Potter (TE) who laterals to Barry Ballard (RB). I'm sure some of the Mayfield "faithful" remember it. I watched it from behind the Bardstown bench and can still remember it. Made for a much easier ride home. Best wishes to both teams and safe travels for the Bardstown team and fans.
  13. What was the deal with the # of fumbled Center/QB exchanges last night? 3 or 4 fumbles and at least as many juggled which threw off the timing of the play.
  14. Don't forget that the only real offensive threat for HHS last night was after #4 ran back the opening kickoff of the 2d Half deep in LC territory. Dale's theory is X # of times you do end up with worse field position, but Y # of times you have the chance for an explosive, game changing return. PS I said they should take the field position as well at the time, but I understand Dale's philosophy.
  15. I think this game comes down to % of possessions turned into points (and whether those points are 3 or 7). From what I've read, LC has quick strike capability which is great and leads to lots of possessions. It can also lead to lots of playing time for LC's defense and an inability to control the clock when ahead. HHS has a reasonable balance between run and pass, but not much of a short passing, ball control option. This gives HHS some options to limit the # of possessions for LC's offense and keep the HHS defense (other than those that go 2 ways) rested. Assuming some ball control by HHS, figure on each team having maybe 8-12 possessions. Every time you put it in the endzone, the pressure goes to the other side to do the same. FGs are a push to slightly negative. Every punt and turnover is a missed opportunity and they become even more important in these games than a defensive struggle where a fumble recovery can be negated by a 3 & out which follows. Field position & special teams may spell the difference as well. Should be a dandy!!!
  16. What was the deal w/ the FC fan waving the FC flag in front of the HHS fans, getting the flag taken away, jumping ugly with the police officer that took the flag and then gettin' dragged out by the elbow by the same officer? Also, nice tribute to the HHS Girls Soccer Team at halftime.
  17. Controlled pass rush would be the key. When the HHS pass rushers didn't stay in their lanes, they lost contain and that's when Franklin Co.'s shifty QB had time and the HHS secondary didn't stay with talented receivers.
