DNA Test Results - The Federal Database is growing
PepRock01 replied to theguru's topic in Controversial Issues
I did one about a year ago, but in my case I had no knowledge of my own genetics. I did it for the sake of having an idea where I came from. While I have no interest in knowing who gave birth to me or who donated the other half of the genetic material I was curious as to the genetic markers and where my ancestors came from. -

I am still horribly upset over the fact that I couldn't make it to Kansas City for the centennial of the end of the war in November. I want, so badly, to go visit the WWI museum there. It will be some years before that happens though with the twins on the way. -

If you look at the numbers a higher percentage of combatants were actually killed in WWI than in any other war in history. The total numbers obviously slant toward WWII, but if you look at percentage killed of those who fought the numbers are way worse for WWI. On top of that you had the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 immediately during and after the end of the war that ravaged so many. Yet we forget... -

I have spent a lot of time on WWI in my life and I get viscerally angry when I see people not give it the respect that it deserves. Most of that, in the US anyway, is lack of knowledge and education on the subject. It was a long drawn out war of attrition where there were no heroes and no real villains. There is no movie where you can watch it and not feel sorry for everyone involved in the hopelessness and horror of a modern war just coming into its own. Some of the most jarring and unnerving images of war in the 20th century are the weird juxtaposing of the old ways of war with the new while looking at the pockmarked moonscape that no-man's land became. -

There is also a YouTube Channel that breaks down WWI week by week called "The Great War." It is long and dense (hell I haven't finished it, I am still in 1916 on it), but it is a good thing to watch or listen to in the background. Martin's "The Great War," is a good book for WWI. It was our textbook for my WWI class at Bellarmine. His bibliography is a great resource for finding all sorts of details about the war. -

You're in the same boat with most Americans. Truly sad that we more or less ignore it in our history classes, to the point where many of our memorials to the men who died in WWI are now crumbling and in disrepair. I don't blame you for it, it's just the nature of how we cover it. It's less cinematic and there is no one that really fits the narrative of cartoonishly evil bad guys like the Nazi's in WWII so it is harder to cover. Americans may like an anti-hero but we have traditionally struggled with not really having a villain when telling our stories. -

No, pay as much as needed! His boys need to go to Trinity. :lol2: -
Meh not interested really, despite living less than 10 minutes away. Then again I find most decorations superfluous and unnecessary. Considering who I am married to, this has obviously caused problems in the past.

I feel almost guilty for laughing as hard as I did at these 2 posts. :lol2:

I honestly am not the kind of person to usually harp on that, but that is pretty indicative of the T-Ballard rivalry. T-X is our biggest rivalry, but T-B is our nastiest. There is no love between those teams at all.
