  1. You know, when people say that the younger generation doesn't know history I am quite surprised when I have someone of an older generation who would have actually known survivors of the previous major pandemic who fully dismisses something as "just the flu." 50 million in 1918 at the tail end of WWI dead not because of the war, but because of the flu. 3-6% of the world's population died in that Flu pandemic, more than died in the trenches of the Somme, Verdun, Gallipoli, Masurian Lakes, Belgrade, Jutland, etc. combined. 10 million died in the fires of the first industrialized war, 50 million died right after. I have 0 doubt that Covid-19 is not anywhere near as deadly as that one, which killed mostly the young and healthy. However if it is even 10% as deadly we'd still be looking at 5 million worldwide. It likely won't approach that, but the rate of infection is the concern here. But don't pull this "HYSTERIA NEVER SEEN BEFORE" malarkey. It was seen before in the modern era AND worse.
  2. Provided that you have insurance to go to a doctor, otherwise people may just keep working.
  3. That is a valid point and one of the reasons why many states have laws on the books regarding cell phone usage in cars.
  4. I'm actually with you on this one, continuing to fly is a bad idea.
  5. Why Experts Are Urging Social Distancing to Combat Coronavirus Outbreak | UC San Francisco So one of the things noted here is that the current average rate of reproduction (i.e. how many people a sick patient infects) is 3.3 whereas seasonal flu is 1.3. This is one of the biggest reasons until we are more familiar with treatments and the most accurate rate of reproduction. Furthermore there are effective treatments for the flu currently and even though tamiflu is borderline worthless it does have some level of efficacy if administered early enough int he run of the disease. Covid-19 does not have anything analogous currently. Your point is not completely fallacious, however there are details that you are hand waving based solely on death toll. By that logic we should quarantine fast food given the rate of death from heart disease in the US. If we had a flu epidemic spread at a rate like Covid-19 in the US then I would suspect that similar actions would be warranted.
  6. Death toll may be one reason but it appears that each infected person seems to infect twice as many as the average flu sufferer. No, Coronavirus Isn't 'Just Like The Flu'. Here Are The Very Important Differences
  7. I have been only a halfway adopter of mobile banking, now i am doing much more. I always did deposits in person before but now I use the check deposit feature on the apps all the time.
  8. That is a dubious statement, efficacy of the vaccine varies year to year depending on if they managed to figure out the most prevalent strains. Furthermore the vaccine is not meant to protect you from all strains of the flu, only the deadly ones. That is the reason why they focus so heavily on the elderly and those who are immunocompromised when it comes to the flu, herd immunity due to vaccine helps as well.
  9. For those of you who may be wondering why the 1918 pandemic keeps coming up this video is the first of a multipart series (each video is short) that goes into detail as to what happened 102 years ago. There are many lessons to take from that one.
  10. Extra History does a good job in their short multipart series in documenting the 1918 flu. The spread and reaction is the most applicable thing to the current situation. Obviously this pandemic will be highly unlikely to be remotely comparable to the death toll of that one, especially because that one killed the young and healthy more so than the older patients.
  11. That is a bit absurd, since any and all businesses will take cards.
  12. Downtown Louisville isn't really a ghost town. Of course my employer will not shut down during all of this and get busier. Our garage is full, but given the nature of what we do it makes sense.
  13. St. Louis managed to enforce some social distancing and cancelled events. St. Louis had 1703 total deaths from the Spanish Flu, Philadelphia 16000. At the time St. Louis was in the top 10 population wise in the US so it was not a matter of small population either. While Covid-19 does not look to have the same deadliness as the H1N1 strain that made its way across the globe at the time its incubation period and the length of time it is communicable is the biggest concern. Although until testing is more widespread in the US we won't know how far it has spread.
  14. Youth has always felt invincible, that is not new.
  15. The numbers I am quoting came across my BBC newsfeed in the last 15-20 minutes.
  16. FWIW I am still on the side of not panicking, I just don't think that the US is going to react quickly enough or thoroughly enough.
  17. However China also has 0 compunction with trampling on individual liberties and given the great firewall of China it is entirely possible that the numbers may be higher. Furthermore we are talking about the country of Tienanmen square so forcefully locking down a city is nothing to them. Also per BBC deaths in Italy are up to 1016, apparently 188 more have passed away in the last 24 hours.
  18. It honestly has been fascinating watching the growth and change of peoples' views on this subject just in this thread alone.
  19. Knowing that this is a fictional story makes this one easier for me. They used the USS Kidd for the shooting but the only thing is that the Fletcher Class DDs did not serve much in the Atlantic, they were much more prevalent in the Pacific Theater of the war. A Benson class DD would make more sense for this but none exist so using one that is semi-contemporary works. That said I have more faith in a Tom Hanks film being accurate to details than anyone else, so I'll see this one at some point.
  20. Having just watched the first 6 episodes as of now I have to say that this is the best Star Wars content since the original trilogy, bar none. It honestly makes me think of Firefly, but Star Wars.
  21. I saw this early this morning, very sad about this. Although I suppose we should be glad that only 2 of the original Pythons are gone.
