  1. There was an Anthony "Ace" Wales that played at Louisville Central and went on to a standout career at Western Kentucky. I would say this is who they have hired.
  2. I doubt they could go past June 30 without some type of rule amendment. July 1 is the beginning of the new school year and any senior from the previous year would likely be ineligible. And you have to factor in the last week of June is the dead period, although in an extreme circumstance such as this that could probably be modified. I think the best hope for the spring is playing at best one week of regular season games, meets, and/or matches and then starting the postseason. But I would be very surprised if anything was played.
  3. And only five have even made it to the largest class championship game: DeSales in 1981, Southern in 1982, Ballard in 1984, Manual in 1988, and PRP in 2012.
  4. That would mean losing about four games off the top of the season (and no preseason games). Do you push the entire season back or just go with a short season? They went down to 15 games in 1987 and 9 games in 1982 due to players strike so there is precedent.
  5. Agreed. I think they'll be fine, but I also didn't have a problem with them asking for a donation. I do hope that the crowds are big at every state championship event during the 2020-21 season. Hopefully people will realize what they've missed and won't take it for granted.
  6. Off the top of my head, I think 1961 was the last season with a third place game. Breathitt played Wheelwright.
  7. True. The third place game no longer existed in 1967 so technically they advanced farther in 1961. But your point is correct.
  8. I’ve got them mid-30s. Apollo is a very young school in comparison to many others and therefore don’t have as many district and region titles. That shoved them down a bit.
  9. I've posted a few articles over the years about best programs in the state, best to never win a championship, etc. With it looking more and more like basketball won't crown a champion in 2020 it seemed like a good time to look at the best programs in our state's illustrious basketball history to never take home a Sweet 16 trophy. Note 1: I did use a formula to rank the top teams and to develop this list. I'll give my opinions along with it. You're welcome to disagree and/or add thoughts of your own. Note 2: Prior to 1927, region tournaments were called district tournaments and the district champion advanced to the state tournament. I've not included those championships in the stats list. 10. Highlands Stats: 33 district championships, 10 regional championships, 9 state tournament games won Last Trip: 2001; lost to Russellville in first round Closest: Second place in both 1924 and 1997. The 1924 team lost to Lexington, who was winning their fifth title in seven years. The 1997 Bluebirds lost to Eastern, one of the most underrated champions of the last quarter century. 9. Monticello - closed in 2013 Stats: 15 district championships, 9 regional championships, 16 state tournament games won Last Trip: 1987; lost to Paintsville in first round Closest: Second place to Flaget in 1960, which capped a streak of four trips in five years. Trojans also finished fourth in 1958. 8. Breathitt County Stats: 35 district championships, 11 regional championships, 8 state tournament games won Last Trip: 1996; lost to Lexington Catholic in first round Closest: Fourth place in 1961. Lost to Lexington Dunbar in state semifinals by one point. 7. Newport Stats: 27 district championships, 11 regional championships, 14 state tournament games won Last Trip: Surprise visit in 2010 was first since 1962; lost to Christian County in first round Closest: Runners-up to St. Xavier in 1935 and Inez in 1954. Early Kentucky basketball power but haven't won a game at state tournament since 1955. 6. Central City - closed in 1990 Stats: 34 district championships, 15 regional championships, 9 state tournament games won Last Trip: 1989; lost to Bryan Station in first round Closest: For years the winningest program in the state, the Golden Tide were runners-up to Ralph Beard and Male in 1945. Central City also recorded a fourth place finish in 1950. 5. Oldham County Stats: 36 district championships, 16 regional championships, 11 state tournament games won Last Trip: 2018; lost to Covington Catholic in semifinals Closest: The semifinal round has been a hurdle for the Colonels, falling in 1963 (Seneca), 1985 (Hopkinsville), 2012 (Scott County), and 2018 (Covington Catholic). Three of the four teams that beat Oldham County would win the state championship. 4. Pikeville Stats: 43 district championships, 11 regional championships, 13 state tournament games won Last Trip: 2018; memorably knocked off undefeated John Hardin in three overtimes before falling to Warren Central Closest: Third place in 1957, falling to Lafayette in semifinals before beating Russell County. 3. Madisonville-North Hopkins Stats: 57 district championships, 16 regional championships, 9 state tournament games won Last Trip: 2019; lost to Warren Central in quarterfinals. Maroons had qualified for 2020 before tournament was canceled. Closest: For such a great program their state tournament resume is a bit thin. Lost to Logan County in semifinals in 1984. Seven other times they've won their opener but lost in second round. 2. Danville Stats: 50 district championships, 12 regional championships, 15 state tournament games won Last Trip: 1990; lost to Clay County in first round. Closest: Another early basketball power, Admirals were second to St. Xavier in 1926 and Ashland in 1934. Danville has only two state tournament wins since World War II, the last coming over Bowling Green in the first round in 1973. 1. Paducah Tilghman Stats: 60 district championships, 23 regional championships, 14 state tournament games won Last Trip: 2010; lost to Shelby Valley in first round Closest: Runners-up in 1953 and 2002 by almost identical scores. Lafayette whipped Tilghman, 84-53, in Memorial Coliseum in 1953 and Lexington Catholic rolled the Blue Tornado, 83-53, at Rupp Arena in 2002.
  10. Every part of this is correct... A 6'9" point guard was just non-existent. Magic averaged 17.1 ppg and 8.4 assists. We take for granted today the ability of big guys to handle the ball but for 100 years prior to this Magic would have played center. Championship game definitely wasn't Bird's best game but he averaged 28.6 ppg, 14.8 rebounds, and passed it beautifully. It is usually stated that Indiana State was a bunch of stiffs, which isn't exactly true as they were undefeated and had Carl Nicks who averaged 19 ppg. and was drafted in the first round by Denver. This is definitely true. Bird had already been drafted by Boston and was seen as a savior of the Celtics while still playing in college. Magic would go to LA and win a title in his first season. Both would dominate basketball in the 1980s. While Michigan State/Indiana State might not have been the absolute best basketball game, there was so much around it and so much that came from it that it must be considered among the most impactful games in college hoops history.
  11. Every description of the Coronavirus is exactly the same as my co-worker had in the late fall. She missed two weeks of work, ended up in the ER, they basically said she had some type of flu although she never tested positive for flu. She said she never thought much about it until they started talking about the symptoms on TV, etc. I'm not saying she had it, but it does make you wonder if there were earlier, perhaps different, types of strains that have been floating around for some time.
  12. NC State/Maryland in the 1974 ACC tournament. Likely the impetus for the NCAA abandoning the one team per conference rule for the NCAA tournament.
  13. I'll start by saying there are lots of miles between Fulton County High School and almost every school in Kentucky. So here is a travel breakdown of their schedule: Average Miles Between Fulton County and... 3 District Games: 160.7 miles 3 Non-District Kentucky Games: 63.7 miles 4 Tennessee Games: 41.6 miles
  14. Interest from some big name schools seemed to wane this year. Stansbury has been able to pull in some pretty high level recruits while in Bowling Green.
  15. Agreed. As with elderly people who have various ailments but ultimately die of pneumonia, I think this virus will unfortunately finish off a lot of folks with existing illnesses. The lack of testing will likely mean they died of their illness and not coronavirus. So it could be a kind of a chicken/egg issue where we never really know the answer.
  16. Any reason? Back to back district titles and a 21 win season this year. Pretty good numbers for a tiny, rural school not used to that level of success.
  17. The easternmost school in the state. Far, far eastern Pike County.
  18. I ordered from Ticketmaster a few weeks ago. I’ve received two emails about refunds. The first said 7-14 days, the other said 14-21. I bought with credit card so I’m assuming that money will go back on my card.
  19. Started watching Versailles on Netflix last week. I've finished the first season. It can be a little over-dramatic at times but I'm looking forward to seasons two and three.
  20. Best guess - and with no knowledge - is that if everything returns to normal in a few weeks (which could be a big if), I could imagine an abbreviated regular season (10-15 games, perhaps) and a regular postseason of district, region, and state. If things do not return to normal by the middle of April, I suspect the season will fall by the wayside. It is likely too early to tell.
  21. Congratulations Hazard but I really wanted to see Wolfe County in Rupp. The good news is they return almost everyone next season.
  22. Correct. Sheldon Clark was a consolidation of Inez and Warfield back in the 1970s. Really cool to see Martin County make it to Rupp. That school/county has been through quite a bit over the last few years. Glad to see them have success!
