  1. When did Sheldon Clark play OCath even once ?? :sssh:
  2. LOL... Betsy Layne has "played around" with football longer than Shelby Valley, Pike Central, and East Ridge have even existed... So, the "rubbing off" is going the other way... :sssh: :creepy:
  3. Agreed. The Cardinals should tough !! :thumb: I'm hoping Prestonsburg becomes a "forgotten" team. The Blackcat's "reality check" this past season have surely taken expectations down a few notches. They'll be NO deluding pre-season hype for veteran players to believe (its part of what happened last season). :sssh:
  4. No... He resigned. The exact particulars don't need to be discussed here, but a small group of veteran "players" did something that resulted in their being expulsed from the team. As the "something" came to public knowledge, some held that the coach's actions weren't enough. Long story short; it became impossible for him to continue as the Blackcat Coach amid the controversy. It was a very harsh time for Coach Letton and his family. 1995 was also a VERY rough time for Prestonsburg Football.
  5. The grass in Prestonsburg and Pikeville is looking greener by the day... I'm sorry to sound so flippant...but, the problems with football in Betsy Layne continue without end.
  6. To expand on Stick1's comments... The thing he had at Prestonsburg (and should also have at LexCath) that he didn't at Montgomery Co. is ... folks (players, parents, alumni, local businesses) who insisted on putting a quality team on the field on Friday. And more importantly, backed that desire up with financial and moral support of the program. (If it ain't backed up, it's just "lip service")
  7. They'll be a lot of second-guessing his offensive play calling if he tries to run Coach Sphire's offense (some are implying this might be attempted on another thread). Coach Letton's recipe for success at Prestonsburg was oriented around aggressive, technically sound defensive play and low-risk offensive play out of the I.
  8. Yep, you're right on the score (it hit me that I had it wrong just before I went to sleep last night...LOL). Mayfield rightfully tried for 2 after their final TD, but missed. Most all that saw the game would agree with your second paragraph (even the Danville players that were there rooting for Mayfield ), but it's just the way the game goes sometimes. If one team isn't head and shoulders over the other and can't extend a lead, crazy things CAN happen. That's the main reason I'm not a big fan of a "pure" ball-control running offense - it lets an opponent stay too close on the scoreboard regardless of one-sided stats.
  9. My friend, go to college and get your secondary school teaching certificate. That's, by far, the best vehicle to get you where you want to go...
  10. I agree with you completely... the Bulldog players from Blaine, Little Cat, etc. would have to be the MOST devoted football players on the team to give up so much to play. But you last sentence could be seen another way... Do you think there are many true 3A schools that can only dress 20 players ?? Sometimes I wonder if today's generation is less willing to give up so much to play the game... :sssh:
  11. For accuracy sake only, it was by 2. The final score was 14-12.
  12. As a long time Prestonsburg fan, I'd like to congratulate LexCath on making a superb decision in giving Coach Letton the job. Though you'll see less "flash" on the field, Coach Letton does an excellent job of teaching solid fundamentals on both sides of the ball. His teams will rarely "give away" a game. Congratulations, Coach. This kind opportunity has been long overdue. I couldn't be happier for you !! :ylsuper: :thumb: :ylsuper: But PLEASE, Knight fans, don't put too much pressure on him!! Keep in mind that last year's Title came about because of the incredible talent you had to run Coach Sphire's pass-oriented attack. Coach Letton is definately more the "win with your defense while not losing the game with your offense"- type coach. If he's forced to continue Coach Sphire's offensive style (unless the talent dictates it, of course), the wheels will come off, sooner or later, because it will over-work his defenses.
  13. I remember those ads. IMO, they're what galvanized the city's residents to keep their own school/identity. The downtown area (more than a bunch of attorney's offices then) and city residents became pro-active in preserving the Paintsville school system. :bunny:
  14. Lawrence Co. really only has '98 and '99 on which to hang their hats. These were the only two years LC would have been "Top 5" contenders in 2A (they were also 3A "Top 5" those years, though). Whether they could have defeated Caldwell Co. or Boyle Co. (the respective 2A champs those years), I'll leave to fans of those teams to debate. Please don't get me wrong, I like Bulldog football. But time time have a way of making the "good years" brightly color more years of the past when "recent times" have been tough. :bunny:
  15. What would have been wrong with SV practicing a "protect the lead" game... you know, moving the ball a minute or so before attempting a shot ?? (THAT sort of ball control practice could even benefit them later while holding the score down...)
  16. Outfield fence now complete. From last night's board meeting, the only field work to be done is to improve the surface in left field. Once that is complete (and the grass grows), the field will be ready for practice and perhaps Saturday afternoon games. Next up...lighting, dugouts, and bleachers...
  17. Sorry if I step on some toes...but I disagree. (To be fair, this can also be applied to Betsy Layne and many other schools with weak programs) The real answer is...the parents allow it to happen. If 20-30 parents were "motivated" enough to attend board meetings as a group and said what they wanted and kept it up, things would change. Since this has gone on sooo long...my take on the situation is...football is something the parents in Magoffin are largely indifferent about. :irked:
  18. I notice Central still has Paintsville on the schedule...so... Someone tell me again why the Apple Bowl needed to be discontinued ??? :sssh: Central being a "bigger" school and "upgrading" their schedule obviously had nothing to do with it seeing as how they still scheduled the Tigers.
  19. sml... There are insufficient numbers of officials now. If you attached those kind of requirements/responsibilities to it, you'd better dramatically increase pay !! Officiating is not a real job. It's really more a "hobby" (perhaps "labor of love") in which the official's pay is little more than the cost of keeping current (clinics and seminars), uniforms and travel time. My opinion is... you take the bad with the good and go on. Who else will do it ? :sssh:
  20. Since we're speaking in such generalities... From the basketball I've seen around the state, this is what I've seen (of course, there are a number of exceptions in each group !!): -13th Region: More emphasis on the outside game offensively AND defensively. -14th and 15th Regions: More emphasis on the outside game offensively and inside game defensively. -16th Region: More emphasis on the inside game offensively AND defensively. -Metro Areas: More emphasis on fast breaks and pressing (speed-based offense and defense). -WKY: ?? (I've not watched enough to tell) IMO, the real key for a given team to excel is to be able to do a couple things well outside of what's typically seen in an area. The first example to my mind is Paintsville's '96 Title team. That team had good inside defense and a couple good perimeter shooters. But then, so did many other teams in the 15th Region. The two things that set them apart was Vanhoose's inside scoring ability and the guards' quickness (that reduced other team's outside looks and breakout opportunities). That particular team lost 10 games, but everything fell in place when everyone concentrated on his role. :bunny:
  21. Agreed. The Eagles played solid defense most of the year. Brianne Daniels has been Central's only dominant pitcher. Surprising to some, she hasn't pitched in college. From info I've had, her motion was considered illegal at that level.
  22. This is even more sad than the Magoffin Co. situation... What I said in this thread, http://www.bluegrasspreps.com/showthread.php?t=83452, applies here, too... (just substitute "Pikeville" in place of "Johnson Central" and "Morgan Co.")
  23. Would someone who knows please post to let me know the team arrived safely ??
  24. If Coach Derossett can find someone who knows how to get open and catch the ball, Bobby Hughes at P-burg has one of the more accurate arms I've seen. Refreshingly, next year will be a fresh start for the Blackcats. :thumb:
