The actual rule says that any player touching the line or actually in the lane for 3 seconds is a violation. Where I see/hear it misinterpreted by the fans is a)when a player is posted up in the lane while the ball is being taken out of bounds b)while the player is the lane and the ball is still in the back court or c)when there are multiple shots on offensive rebounds. In A and B, the count does not start until the ball is in the front court. In C, the count re-starts EVERY time there is a shot.

The next time you're at a game and you get ready to yell the above, I want you to pause and then think about what you're actually saying. I'm always amazed at how often I hear people yell this at refs.

The "catcher's balk" is a misnomer. Its still a balk on the pitcher. However in #2 since it was not during an intentional walk, its a legal play by the catcher. On the "home to 2nd" distance, if you know your Pythagorean Theorem, you can figure it out.
