What exactly is the rule (or rules) pertaining to the three seconds call in HS basketball? The reason Ia sk is that at the recent Mason County-Montgomery County game, I heard more than a few fans gently asking the officials to consider a 3-seconds call.:D

It was obvious to me that there were players with one foot inside the lane for extended periods of time (5 seconds or so at a time; happened maybe a half dozen times once I really started watching), but no 3-second calls were made. So I'm just curious as to the wording of the rule.

The actual rule says that any player touching the line or actually in the lane for 3 seconds is a violation.

Where I see/hear it misinterpreted by the fans is a)when a player is posted up in the lane while the ball is being taken out of bounds b)while the player is the lane and the ball is still in the back court or c)when there are multiple shots on offensive rebounds.

In A and B, the count does not start until the ball is in the front court. In C, the count re-starts EVERY time there is a shot.

I myself wouldn't be happy with a referee calling 3 seconds. That means they have been watching one player for 3 seconds and we all know there is A LOT that can happen in 3 seconds.

I'm guessing that it has to be really obvious to get called.

What? Each ref has an area they watch. One of them is watching the lane. Its not hard to see the lane area and notice one player camped out.

I might see it once per game. Maybe. I think a lot of refs will talk to the players while action is going on which probably cuts down on the number of calls.

True cshs. They will often say get out of the lane or something to that effect if they arent really effecting what is going on. If they still dont is usually when they call it. I think a lot of people dont realize that a player will get a little leeway on the call, like when they are entering and leaving the lane. It is really whenever they post or just stand down in there. A lot of refs will give you the benefit of the doubt if like half a foot is in the lane as well. Really a subjective call by the refs.

Additionally, the rule states that an allowance shall be made for a player who, having been in the restricted area for less than three seconds, dribbles in or moves immediately to try for goal. So he can be in the lane longer than three seconds if he is dribbling in or moving to try for goal.

Good point about the area the official is watching.

A 2 man crew may have a tougher time.

Baseline official can be counting and then ball goes to his side in corner he has to take on that play and backside official must then start count...

Do you get 8 seconds in the lane if...

-your posting your guy up in the lane (2 seconds)

-then you recieve the ball in the lane (4 seconds with ball)

-then you pass the ball away giving you time to get out of the lane (2 seconds)

If you are working the outside of the lane and "horse shoeing" it will hardly ever be called.... The only time I really have a problem with the 3 second call is when the outside (top) official calls it. To me it is a call for the baseline ref. There is too much going on from half court to the lane to be watching 1 guy for that long...

No. He doesn't get a new 3 seconds when he catches the ball. However, the wording is a little vague as it says "an allowance will be made...." There is no way they will let you have the ball in the lane for 3 or 4 seconds.
