How are the Massey defensive ratings calculated? What factors go into the calculation? Not saying that these aren’t the top 3 defensive teams, but I believe they all play a very methodical style. Points allowed should only be one factor considered in determining defensive rankings. FG% against, turnovers, etc are much better measures of quality of defense than points allowed. Anyone know what the factors are?

This one featured a benches clearing brawl. It didn’t really have any impact on the outcome. At the time of the fight, the score was 70-46. I’m sure it will result in some suspensions for the next game. Highlands is now 7-0 but doesn’t yet have a win over a quality opponent (basing that on opponents’ results to date). Boyle is the only team they’ve played with a winning record at 3-2. My question for the 9th region folks is how good is Highlands? Do they have a shot at winning the 9th this year?

Hagen and Luke were much more than shooters. They could create their own shots. And Luke’s team was the last good Boyle team. I think his ability to not just shoot, but be their offense, was the primary reason for their success. I also think the Boyle teams under Adams and Webb have had very different identities. Adams’ teams generally featured basketball players and supplemented with football guys. During the Webb era, they’ve instead featured football guys.I know that one has to play the hand that they’re dealt and there is some truth to that. But Adams was effective at using his (football) athletes to supplement the more skilled basketball guys. As far as shooters, Boyle has had a few guys the past few years that could shoot the ball, I just don’t think they have effectively gotten them quality looks.

Accurate statements, but what did you mean by this game showing that?

Impressive win for Coach Jackson! They beat a much bigger team with their good guard play. Anxious to see how they progress throughout the year.

Agreed. They need to look to play a more up tempo style as the one advantage they will have most nights is athleticism. They are not at all well suited for a halfcourt game. As you said, outside shooting will be a challenge plus they are a lot smaller than the regional contenders. They struggled with the size of both Southwestern and Rock. Regarding Rock, their big kid played a great game. Scored and rebounded very well. Anyone have his stats (points and rebounds)?

It appears that Robbins has greatly improved (based on stats). With that and the addition of Fugate, I’m anxious to see if those 3 are enough to offset their lack of an inside presence. Especially given the size of the top teams in the region. It wouldn’t be the first time that Jackson has pulled it off.

I’m not familiar with Nations Elite. They have Calloway top 5. It doesn’t seem like their ranking is quite on par with the other two.

Definitely. He will also benefit from Brown’s return as he is most effective in an up tempo style of play, running the floor and crashing the boards in a fast paced game. The other issue is that after Driver, they’re pretty small. Smith is their next “big guy,” and he’s more of a 3 or a small PF. Tough spot for him to be expected to fill that role for Boyle.

Yes he is playing. My understanding is it’s a high ankle sprain and those can take a month or more to recover from. That is an injury you don’t want to try to come back from too early. Boyle needs him badly. His defensive pressure and ability to get them transition buckets will be critical for them to generate enough offense to win against top tier regional teams.

I agree on your assessment but we will agree to disagree on height. He is a little taller than Quisenberry. Regardless, even if they are the same height, if Quisenberry is a Power 4 player, no way Brown isn’t D1. Just no way.

From outsiders hating on the football program to locals hating on the kids that left. Wow. Inaccurate comments and assessments across the board IMO. Sorry outsiders. Boyle football will continue to be Boyle football with an elite coaching staff and plenty of talent to carry forward. This won’t affect the desire for kids from other schools wanting to play for Haddix and staff. There’s nothing wrong with the program just because a couple kids decided to leave Boyle. As one poster pointed out, those two kids are basketball first kids, having played that game long before football. No reason to try to make their departure about football. As it pertains to basketball, I wouldn’t have expected either of those two to play behind anyone on the current Boyle basketball roster. They would be on the floor 90% of the game for this Boyle team and would’ve helped make this team a handful. If I’m wrong, either the Boyle staff’s assessment would’ve been way off (not recognizing the talent), or they’re not that talented and it will prove a bad move for them because they both went to programs/teams with more talent and thus the competition for playing time will be a whole lot stiffer. Guess time will tell!

Yet he is a couple inches taller than Quisenberry. I get that Quisenberry is a unique talent but I don’t understand why there isn’t something there for Brown. You can’t convince me he wouldn’t do well at an FCS school.

I think Ateny has the ability to compete with Ellis for the best player in the region! The big fella has had a couple games now with strong stats. And this one was against a big guy from West. Speaking of him, how’d he look?

I think the fact that it was a technical more so than anything. Southwest had recently been down 10 and had already cut it to 2. Then Driver fouled the player which would’ve resulted in a tie game anyway. Instead, the technical as well and the kid hit all 4 free throws and that put them up 2. That completed a 12-0 run by Southwest, so they already had big momentum before that. The good news for Boyle is that they went on the road to play a team that is top 6-7 or so in the region this year, and had a real chance to win this game. Brown coming back will make a HUGE difference for them. So, like the last two years, I again think they have the personnel to beat anyone in the region. Probably can be a top 3 team if they live up to their potential. Southwest has some nice players at the F/C spots but appear to be challenged in the backcourt. Their bigger kids matched up well with Boyle’s inside players but they struggled on the perimeter. We will see if they have the pieces to improve that over the course of the season

Wow, this is surprising, especially with DCA not at full strength.

Southwest didn’t look nearly as good as I thought they would/should. They have upside for sure but thought they’d be farther along given everyone they returned.

So will they look to play Boyd off ball some this year? Do they have other guards capable where that could be an option?
