NCH was 2-19 the year before Mayo and Walker arrived. Other than for the years of Mayo and Walker, only the mothers of the players would have thought that NCH was "one of the top HS programs in the country". If it was "top" in anything it sure wasn't basketball. Huntington was a state power without Mayo. It is now a national power. Without Mayo, the LexCath game may well have ended somewhat differently. Patterson is good but he is far from being Mayo or, for that matter, Walker.

Excellent point. Do you suppose Smith forgot to tell Hanson that UK had "lost interest". As for the "drop off" in interest, I would suggest that it was because Smith finally got the message. However, I do agree that with your last statement.

I never realized that Smith confided in you. I imagine that any loss of interest in Mayo resulted from the fact that he never, ever showed even a remote interest in UK. Possibly, UK got the message. If not, they should have because it was a well known fact around Friendship Road. As for the one year reference, possibly the failure to get the best as do others explains Smith's inability to reach the final four in recent years. It sure isn't because of a lack of money and facilities.

They are an unknown quantity outside this area because they had not played west of Morehead. Even though the game was at Russell, this win should help. This is a quality win.

Ah, oldrambler, you know and I know that there is much more to a venue than size of floor and height of basketball goals. True, Rose Hill has won in far more intimidating arenas. However, when teams are of similar ability, the homecourt advantage tends to be the difference.

I have been reading posts on BGP for several years. However, this one gets the award as the most ridiculous post of all time. To say that Kentucky can't use Mayo because they already have guards compares with saying the Reds can't use Roger Clemens because they already have starting pitchers. I haven't heard too many NBA people mention Meeks, Jasper, or Porter as lottery picks, have you? What will Mayo be missing by not coming to UK? The obvious answer is "absolutely nothing". T-CAT4LIFE seems to think that UK had little or no interest in Mayo. The fact of the matter is that, even when Smith came to see him as a seventh grader, Mayo had no interest whatsoever in UK. That never changed. The smug attitude of many UK fans is beyond reality. UK doesn't need Mayo? Get real. The truth is Mayo doesn't remotely need UK. The Wildcats no longer strike fear in the hearts of the colleges of the nation as they did in the time of The Baron.

I'll go along with some others and say that these two could meet in the regional tournament. Hopefully, it will be in the first round.

I think your post reveals the crux of the problem. If this "assistant principal" is in a position of authority, is known by the students of his/her school, and has any respect or credibility, why did he/she not get any results from his first trip to shut up his/her students? Why were repeated admonitions necessary? And, since he/she obviously, being an assistant principal and all, knew at least some of these students (we are in the second half of the school year), will he/she carry through with some disciplinary measures when school reconvenes? Also, UKCATSFAN, my "eyewitness radio" comments were meant to be humorous and to illustrate that we all see games from our own biased viewpoint. On one side of the floor, it is clearly a charge. On the other side, it is a block. Finally, shooterx3 makes a valid point about the event that nearly changed the outcome. He suggests that it was a good move but, I'm sure in truth, he knows it was a cheap shot that, as with many cheap shots, worked for the perpetrator.

The posts on the game action are informative. However, this post by JFLDAD tells more of true importance than anything else to date. His observations shouldn't be so summarily dismissed by those trying to defend those at fault because that attitude is much of the problem. I watched the replay on television and conclude that Ashland had no reason to complain about the officiating. The better team won.

Excellent point, FBALL. I did, in fact, listen to 97.1 FM. As for the other issue, the radio broadcaster did mention that there were some "football cheers" being made although he say who was doing it. Since Russell reached the state championship game and Ashland lost along the way, I figured that the Russell people were doint the cheers. It sounds like I reached the wrong conclusion and that, actually, the "chants" were neither cheers nor appropriate. Stuff like that reflects poorly upon a school community. Too bad. But, in the end, the final score is what gives bragging rights.

Lady Vikings? Sounds good to me. I'll use it although there is nothing wrong with Vikingettes.

I don't have any statistics but eighth grader, Alex Malloy, hit four 3s in the first half. He has a fine future.
