There are a lot of solid players in the 2026 class, but if I'm starting a team and I can take just one, this is the guy I'm taking. I don't know if that translates to a Mr. Football win or not, but I've been a big proponent of his ability for a while now.

CAL travels to Rash Stadium on Friday to take on Owensboro with a 7 p.m. CDT kickoff. CAL is coming off a 45-7 victory over Pikeville. Conversely, Owensboro is coming into the contest off of a 38-7 loss to St. X. This will be the 3rd meeting between these two schools with the last 2 being wins for CAL the last 2 years. 2022 - 28-14 CAL 2023 - 27-17 CAL CAL essentially has a 2-headed monster at all offensive skill positions in the form of Brodie Pfeiffer and Jackson Burke at QB, Jeffrey Vezzana and Tyree Stoner at RB and Ja'Hyde Brown and Gaines Howard at WR. The CAL offense is tough to stop due to their ability to beat you a variety of different ways with a variety of different weapons. On the defensive side of the ball last week, Sr. Jason Hilliard anchored the line from his DE spot while Sr. Jackson Settle and Jr. Micah Newsome both finished with at least 10 tackles in the contest. Containing the offensive skill players for Owensboro will be a tall task for that group this Friday. Owensboro, on the other hand, is coming into this contest off of a lackluster effort against St. X. Sr. Evan Hampton and So. Kingston Dillard were largely held in check, which is a testament to the defense of St. X. RB Evan Hampton is a true talent and is capable of breaking a big play at any time. The same can be said or WR Kingston Dillard. Going off week 1 results, one might be led to believe this matchup could be a one-sided contest, but that would be a huge mistake. Owensboro has played toe-to-toe with the CAL the last two years, and I expect the same this year with a huge rebound effort from last week. This game will be won in the trenches as I truly believe skill positions for the two teams are extremely close to a toss-up. Who wins and why?

They didn’t exactly inform you incorrectly. Anyone in Jefferson County can go to Male, but it isn’t open enrollment & they aren’t a resides school where they have to take you if you live in their area. You have to be in the traditional school program to be guaranteed a spot (I.e. attend JCTMS, Barrett or Johnson MS although most Johnson kids go to Butler). After that, it’s a lottery for the non-traditional MS kids, but there are very limited spots that they accept.

Bullitt East simply looks outmatched on all fronts.

When did Male go to open enrollment? They’ve always been a traditional feeder first, mostly Barrett & JCTMS, and then a lottery after that for any non-traditional MS kids with limited open spots for that.

CAL played decent tonight, but not great. There were some simple mistakes that have to be cleaned up, like jumping offsides on a field goal attempt, which gave Pikeville a 1st down & led to their only TD, but it was just the first game, so I’m sure it will. There were still some things that have me shaking my head & questioning some things, but onto next week & Owensboro. I’m sure they’ll be looking for redemption after the last 2 years & then last nights showing against St X. Pikeville will be fine. They have a few solid players. Sorry, I don’t have names but 22 ran the ball hard, 3 is a pretty capable receiver & 50 played well up front on the DL for them. They’ll be in the thick of it for a 1 A title this year.

Do you have the field goal % & rebounding stats for each team? Did anyone foul out tonight?

My son played on team KY FBU & Battle of the Regions with Jayvian Meaux & against him in the middle school playoffs last year. It was a lot better playing with him than against him ?. I was happy when I saw he went to Danville because I knew he would be a big shot in the arm for that program. Glad to see him get his HS career off to a great start.

I knew Stone Perkins wasn’t playing & was cautiously optimistic Kellen Hall would play, but knew he probably wouldn’t.

CAL will be without Stone Perkins (Ball St commit) & Kellen Hall (#7 ranked 2028 national prospect) tonight.

Bullitt Central lost most of their production from a 2-8 team last year. They do return 3 of their top 6 tacklers from last year. Their offense starts and stops with their QB, AJ Lee. If they can find a receiver or two for him to throw the ball to, they'll be ok. If not, I would expect about the same season results as last year.

Which side of Shelbyville Rd though; west of the Watterson or east of the Gene Snyder ? In all seriousness, CAL has potential to be a top 5 team in the state. On their best day, they could go toe-to-toe with any team in the state, but that doesn’t mean they’re the best team in the state & maybe even not top 5. Could they play with and possibly beat Trinity & St X? Yes, they could. However, they don’t have to worry about that. All they have to worry about is beating Pikeville right now.

One has a chance to play, one is a toss-up, but more than likely will be out and the other I'm confident won't play. In fact, the one who won't play, I'd be surprised if he returned before CAL's game against Ryle, but we'll see. Kids definitely heal quicker than us old folks.

You’ll find that out Friday ?. Two of them didn’t play against Franklin County.

I believe they still are broadcasting both CAL & Trinity home games, but not 100% positive on that. I haven’t heard anything different.

I believe BE will be without what is by far their best defender. I believe he might be out for the season as well due to injury, which I hope is not true, but being told it is.

CAL did not. I believe they’ll be without 3 starters Friday, one of which is a D1 FBS commit & another is a high level D1 recruit. They do have very capable backups in their place however. And yes, always hoping for a clean, injury free game every Friday.

I think when you have the numbers that St X & Trinity have, plus get the caliber of kids they typically do, it’s easier to find 22 kids that can play, which lends itself to one way players. Not a whole lot of teams, especially in lower classes, but even in 5A & 6A, have either the quantity or quality of players to do it.

Although I believe CAL would running clock Franklin County in an actual game this year, that scrimmage score is deceiving. I don’t think this is close to the caliber of team we’re accustomed to Franklin County having as in recent years. As for Pikeville, you know they’re going to battle. They’re not going to roll over. CAL will have to work for this W. I could see a 7-0 or 0-0 first quarter and a close one late into the second quarter, but I think CAL wears them down after that & pulls away. An eventual running clock wouldn’t surprise me but one before the fourth quarter would. The other thing is CAL will be without a few starters, one of which is a D1 FBS commit, and that will help Pikeville greatly.

I saw them at 7v7 at EKU. Their QB could spin it a bit & they had some long, rangy athletes out there. It would be good for 3A if they have a good year.

Crazy to think, but last year, all 3 of those guys were at CAL.
