Alternate helmets in high school? I thought that was reserved for the ESPN "reality show" schools like Bishop Gorman. The NFL claims it has abandoned alternate helmets for "safety reasons". The reason that makes the most sense to me is that by using one helmet for one season it is easier to capture data on the concussion and what role the helmet played or may not have played. Stated another way, it takes out a variable (how new or old the helmet was) when trying to analyze concussion data. On the other hand, why wouldn't you want to rotate helmets whose shells take a beating? Isn't the helmet shell and internal padding weaker at the end of the season than at the beginning? Instead of using one helmet for one season, maybe the NFL should get a sample group of players who rotate into new helmets once every four games.

Ryle by 10 as well. Pull away with free throws at the end. They have four legit scoring threats. It is really hard to keep all of them locked down. The college court is also a big advantage to Ryle. Plus, I know its the Sweet 16, but Schwartz and Scherr have both played, and are comfortable, on the largest stages. The x-factor to me is Niece. Great to see her back. Ryle hasn't played SK with her in the lineup and it sounds like every game she is more and more comfortable.

I am disappointed posters... seven pages of a thread and not one mention of Chuck Smith??? Back in the old days, we would have have had 10 Chuck Smith jokes by now about how he could coach Boyle County with one arm and take the Bowling Green job with the other arm. Very disappointed in all you !!! :lol2:

Wow !! What a hire. Congrats to Coach Woolf and Campbell County. Campbell County boys better buckle those chin-straps a little tighter for summer practice... and then the rest of NKY better buckle them up for the season.

I wish Cooper nothing but success. This district might actually be the toughest in the state. The only reason I mentioned feeder programs is that it is my personal opinion that as football numbers continue to decline or hold steady that the pool of great athletes for football will be more shallow. That puts a premium on feeder programs to create the pipeline. And, compared to the other schools in this district Cooper is currently behind in this regard. Look, Cooper has everything a kid could want. New school, great stadium (although its ridiculous they don't have field turf), good coach and parents that care. All the tools are there.

I will agree with one comment. It is all about varsity wins, but if you think that the current state of the Union Jags/Little Jags/Cooper feeder is anywhere close to that of the NKY Bandits or Union Raiders I got nothing for you. A kid can sign-up as a Raider or Bandit in kindergarten and play for that feeder/high school until they graduate. I have no idea how that will translate at the high school level the next two years, but it WILL eventually translate. Ask CovCath what they think of their feeder program and the impact it has had.

They actually have teams at every level from K-8. Cooper does not. And Conner's teams (Bandits) are regularly playing for Super Bowl titles usually against Union. Cooper's lower levels (K-4) had to combine with Boone just to field teams.

Conner's feeder system is "light years" ahead of Cooper's. It might not show the next two high school seasons, but eventually it will. Now that everyone is basically NKYFL and then middle school ball is taking over in 7th grade, Cooper's feeder problem will become more evident.

Man... have to say I was rooting for the Lady Owls here. Things don't come easy in Owsley County. Best of luck to Macie Gibson. It's going to be fun seeing how the three Murray girls and Macie lead the Racers in the future.

I really hope there aren't any crazy upsets in the regions and we get a great Sweet 16. It could be a wild tournament. Hope both of these teams make a run !!

The draw could give us Mercer County and SHA in the state final !! Not taking anything away from Murray... they have a great team... just not as deep as Mercer County.

For the purposes of football only, Ryle is NOT similar to any other program in Boone County. In grades K-8, they have 3x's as many kids in their football feeder programs as Cooper, Conner and Boone. In fact, I would be willing to guess that Ryle has more kids playing pee-wee football than the other three schools combined. To be clear, I have no problem with this and am glad to see successful programs and kids wanting to play. But, the BOE, central office or whoever it may be should recognize the disparity and not force the other schools to play up just for the sake of having all the county schools in one division.

Congrats!!! Wofford will be perfect for him. Outstanding education and Coach Ayers made a 30 year career out of finding out how to use guys with his skill set. I doubt that philosophy will change with the new coach.

If its possible to say a D1 commit is underrated, then Lexi Held fits that mold. She doesn't get as much press as some of the other, but she is fun to watch. Same could probably be said for Coach West's coaching ability. Not much press, but the guy can coach.

Ryle has the best stadium. Ryle has enough kids in its pee-wee programs to have TWO full programs. If you include the Hawkeyes they have enough for THREE full pee-wee programs. Conner is next best with numbers, but Cooper and Boone don't even have enough kids for their own pee wee teams... they had to merge. Ryle should be 6A. Boone, Conner and Cooper should get to play 5A (or whatever division they are supposed to play) until they have enough school population to play up. Anything else is cheating the kids at those schools. Football is (and always has been) a numbers game. The bigger the numbers the more likely you are to find 22 kids that can play. Here's an idea... if the BOE makes the other schools play up then they should immediately install field-turf at the three schools who don't have it.

Definitely best Cov Cath team ever. The schedule was the schedule. You play who's on it. They beat every team for the first time ever. That should really end the discussion. But to further the point, to me, the teams that always stand out are the teams that physically impose their will on you. Inevitably, that usually means the faster the team plays in relation to its competition the more memorable the performance. '87 Miami '93 Florida State '95 Nebraska '04 USC '14 Ohio State Alabama... pick one You remember these teams because in relation to their competition they just simply stood out. That was CCH this year. Its impossible to compare teams of the different eras, but do you really think for a second that the '87 CCH team could cover any of the offensive weapons CCH had this year? Don't kid yourself. And if you think the '87 team could line up and knock CCH off the ball... think again...Madison Southern tried that.

I know there is always a lot of politicking for these spots, and I am not advocating for any single player. Any of the 7 girls nominated could have performed at a high level for this game. My problem is that Texas received 7 selections and the Kentucky girls out played the Texas teams on the national stage all summer long. The Commonwealth deserved at least one spot.

Amen !! Brossart has a good team. Young, scrappy and they compete. They will be better in the future. Having seen Brossart play, I guarantee their girls wouldn't want anyone to take their foot off the gas. Competitors never do. CC is just "other-level" this year and its also the way they play. They are going to speed you up, they are going to force turnovers and obviously it is serving them well. I really hope CC makes a run in the Sweet 16.

Then he missed on Butler and Mayer. QB's are a different animal and you never really know how it will turn out see Barker, Drew. But, Butler is a two-year starter for the Boilers if they ever offered.

Originally I thought Mayer, but on second thought I’m going against the grain and say Kam Butler. Kid dominated every single game he played in and got very little press for it.
