  1. Coach Gruneisen use to say things are never as good as they seem, or as bad as they seem. Maybe another run for the Birds is right around the corner and things are not nearly as bad as some of their fans think.
  2. I believe this is simply an idea. I do not believe it has ever been presented to any entity as a proposal. My understanding, the 3-4 seed would play for a bowl championship.... not to be considered as a “state champion.” It is an attempt to move back the season, a week out of the heat & eliminate the 1 v. 4 blowouts. I’ve also heard support for your plan as presented here & what you sent to the advisory committee.
  3. Looks like some schools are blessed with very good coaches. It is refreshing to hear about the good things these coaches are doing at their schools. Thank you for the responses and please keep them rolling in.
  4. The only program I remember with "Super 8" video back in the early 70s was Frankfort HS. I enjoyed watching those games in color. Every other school's video,at least the ones I saw, Boyle's opponents during that time, used 16 mm. Glad to see someone else out there is as old as I am! My guess is that both teams in this situation have all the video they want on each other.
  5. Different perspective: What schools have a really good coach and the school/community needs to provide more support.... funding, facilities, staffing, etc. ?? What schools out there, if we are honest, the wheels come off if the head coach walks out the door and they better work to keep him? I am biased, but when a program struggles, everyone looks at the head coach when more than likely it is other issues or simply a lack of talented players. And, to be clear, Mercer County Schools & our community supports our program and I am excited to be here. I hope they keep me! I didn't want anyone to read anything thing into this. Lol.
  6. Kevin Brown became the head coach in 96 when I started at Mason. Wonderful man , very good friend, and outstanding football coach. He has done a great job building that program. I have missed seeing him every October since coming to Mercer. I am thankful our paths crossed.
  7. Another thing that is tough to measure, it helps if the coach is a great fit at his school. Not all coaches fit as well at each school. Yes, some coaches are better than others. But, some coaches are more successful if they are a fit at their school. Coach Stonebreaker is a great example of this.... he is a very good coach, but is an exceptional fit at Casey County. They are really different when he is there. Saban, Arnsparger, Holtz, Spurrier.... GREAT fits at Alabama,LSU, Notre Dame, Florida.... not as successful in the NFL.... but absolutely GREAT coaches. "Fit" is a big deal, but really tough to figure out.
  8. When I got to Mason County, I was told if you just write "Coach" on the envelope with the address, "Maysville, KY", it would be delivered to Coach Feldhaus. I enjoyed the times we got to visit, usually at the end of the season at the H&W Show, hosted by Kenton Station Golf Course. He was always encouraging and willing to share his thoughts to make me a better coach, but also understand a little better how things work in Mason County & Maysville. A legend but also a down to earth guy that would help others. There are too many blessings to count during my time at Mason County. Without a doubt, one of the biggest was getting to know Coach Feldhaus.
  9. Our injured player is fine and should be back soon. Thank you for the comments and checking on him. The Rebels have an outstanding football team. Our football team was much better last night than the team we put on the field against Taylor County. I am pleased that we have just finished the best two weeks of practice through out the entire season.... and some of our practice issues have been getting more of our guys healthy. I was pleased that especially early in the game we competed well and executed our game plan well.Obviously we need to be more consistent and do that for the entire game. If we can keep stringing together good practices, that will improve as well. Good luck to the Rebels the rest of the way!
  10. Both the Grant & Mason staffs are maximizing their kids and what they have. I was able to attend the game. Both teams played hard & were well-coached.
  11. I have mixed feelings about that. We weren't that bad at Mason, but at one point were 1-6 in 98. We got through it, and turned the corner at the end of the season. But, I was really concerned about losing our team/program. I will agree though that after fighting through it, we came out a substantially better football program. But, it was a very tough stretch.
  12. My first year at Mason was 96. We were in a tough district with Russell, Lloyd & Newport. Lawrence got added in 97 AND East Carter had a very good team at that time also. I thought, “good grief...what have I got myself into!?”
  13. Bill Botts. Rudy Tassini. Roy Lucas, Jr. 3 of my favorite Juggernauts. We had some great battles with them when I was at Mason between 1996 & 2004. Glad to see them having success!
  14. Mike & Ann loved Royal athletics and poured their life into those kids.
  15. Yes, that was a great rivalry and I loved playing in Flatwoods! I miss seeing Coaches Ivan McGlone & Garry Morris. They always had great gameplans for us and it was a big challenge to play the Red Devils. Tremendous people & coaches. Black Shoes and White ShoeStrings: Destination: Flatwoods
  16. Super proud of Coach Thomas, the staff & players. Good luck the rest of the season!
  17. Jim McKee has been a good friend of mine for a long time. The job he has done at Scott County has been incredible. He has most certainly had a large and positive impact on KY HS Football. And, you don't have to read his mind. He tells you exactly what he thinks. Go Cards and best of luck the rest of the way!
  18. Congratulations to Coach Thomas & the Royals!
  19. Mike Murphy, our baseball coach at Mason, very good friend, use to work in landscaping. Even in Maysville, Ky, on the Ohio River, he said they could dig down a foot to try to dig out bermuda but could not kill it. It has spread to our baseball field at Mercer and drives them nuts. We were able to bring back our old bermuda practice field at Mercer after 10 years of little to no maintenance. Just killing the crap brought back 80 % of the field. It is labor intensive, but we have done field repair often using sprigs and sod from around the edge of the game or practice field. Didn't cost a dime other than spending a day working on it. If it were not for bermuda and being south of the Ohio River, I would be more for synthetic turf. Farther north, it is tougher to have an answer outside of synthetic turf.
  20. Based on my experiences, grass can be maintained relatively inexpensively if it is bermuda and you are south of the Ohio River. The farther south you move, the cheaper it is to maintain. Rye/fescue is tough to keep a uniform surface and more expensive.
  21. We have had nights on Bermuda fields that looked awful. Rinse off the mud & roll them, you will be surprised how much grass is still there.
  22. His heart is into football... but he loves basketball more. He loves football and plays very hard. Very similar to Chris Lofton.
  23. For the first time in 26 years as a head coach, & with some really good players, Trevon was my first guy that Notre Dame came to visit. No offer but very interested. Trevon is the one who must do the work/practices. This is his life and he wants to play basketball. I support that 100%. He would be great in either sport.
  24. Jessica Batey, Mason County, 2007 thru 2008: 84 extra points, 2 FGs.... 90 points scored in 2 seasons.
