  1. He did finish and as far as I am concerned, was the toughest guy on the field. I had no idea it was coming, but was very pleased to hear Monty Wilkerson and Ervin Vanover announced as 1970 Captains and presenting the Robert Allen Yankey Award to Ned Stevens. I got to speak to Ned after the game. My Dad coached all three of those guys in 1970 and was very proud of them and their teammates. If we can get everyone well and play consistently as well as we did the first quarter, we have a chance to be pretty good. Good luck to Coach Smith and the Rebels the rest of the way!
  2. A wise , well-respected coach, has been very good for a long, long time attributed, at least the early season injuries, to the heat. I am in the minority.... but I would be open to starting our season the first Friday in September to move out of the worst heat. Keep the playoffs as is.... November is the best time of the year anyway. We get more kids out by starting later and eliminate some of the health issues that are connected to the heat. The schools that are always good will be fine, regardless of what we do. Moving out of the heat will help some of the schools that struggle so bad with numbers. I would hate to see schools begin dropping football. It is great for kids!
  3. We do not. We stopped toward the end because the jerseys didn’t have a good way to attach the name. When we did do it, was a big hassle. We did it to help us get kids.
  4. I am all for POSITIVE posts after those teams win! When we had that 7 game losing streak at Mason, I was not counting on purpose. Coach Ullery walks in and says....”You know we have lost seven in a row.” I said....”Thanks a lot for letting me know!” Lol.
  5. I hate this thread. We went through a 7 game losing streak at Mason. It was rough. The Wednesday morning(practice at 6:30 am before school) before we finally broke the streak, our water system quit working, humidity was near 100%, and my son says we easily did more than 100 up downs at that practice. Losing stinks, but if you continue to hold kids accountable, all that is left is kids that are totally committed to each other who are tougher than nails. When we got back from Highlands that season, those kids won two district titles, reached the quarterfinals in back to back seasons, and did not lose a regular season game until October, two seasons later. I will say this.... hats off to the kids and coaches who continue to walk through the door everyday and don't give up the fight. I have tremendous respect for you. On a daily basis, do the best you can. You will fight your way out of it. And, hopefully sooner than later.
  6. Love my old coach. Very proud of him and thankful he was my HS football coach.
  7. You didn't assume I was tweeting from the sideline?? Lol
  8. We have used this in our frosh/JV conference for over 10 years. The format was driven by the need to protect our kids and get them home at a decent time on a school night (Monday) . If there is a tie at the end of regulation, we have a coin toss for a 2 point play. The winner of the toss can choose offense or defense. Loser chooses end of the field. If the offense scores, that team wins the game. If they do not score, the team on defense wins the game. The tie is broken on one play. Sounds radical... but no more radical than eliminating kick off. For frosh/JV games it has worked very well. Does it have a place in HS Varsity games, college, or the NFL? Thoughts?

  10. I am a big fan of Daniel Barker and TJ Maynard. Regardless of who wins, those kids are blessed to have these guys as their coach.
  11. In 2003 we had a great team and no one wanted to play us. In 2004, our QB got hurt and we got stuck playing Middletown, OH(ever heard of Andre Amos) week 10.... we were 1-8 going into the game. I am sure Trinity will be fine, but the level they play, they have very few options. Scott County has done the same thing. Moeller and LaSalle? In the big picture.... huge compliment to the staffs and programs of both schools.
  12. You guys have a very good team. Good luck to you the rest of the way!
  13. I am biased because of my friendship with Coach McKee. I still think this is a landmark win and a testament of the phenomenal job he has done at Scott County HS over a long period of time. Congratulations to Coach McKee and his Cardinals!
  14. Chad Asbury takes care of our fields.... the same guy that did our field at Mason. This is the bermuda on the practice field for our MS & freshmen. Our varsity practices on the old Mercer gamefield and we play our games at old Harrodsburg HS. Chad does a great job with all of our fields. Our kids have a great place to play and practice!
  15. The first two weeks have gone well. We have plenty of work ahead of us and we are a work in progress. But, we are going in the right direction and our investment in culture over the offseason is paying off. Our overall team strength is also substantially better. Black Shoes and White ShoeStrings: Starting Year 27.... still growing and learning
  16. Sumo, Danny Weddle, and Ron Bailey would be great resources for this project. When I was a young assistant football coach at Paris HS, I was always impressed with the effort and ability of the Maysville HS & Mason County HS basketball players. It was fun to watch those kids play. When I became the head football coach at Mason County, post-merger, I was impressed with those kids and really enjoyed coaching them for 19 years.
  17. Suppose to be an announcement this afternoon.... and I am not playing games.... I really do not know who we are hiring.
  18. We have gone to one 3 hour practice each day, in the morning, to eliminate any rule/heat concerns. In the old days, we did 3-a-days, and our guys were ready for those hot, mid August bowl games played at 5 pm. Our schedule..... 8 am- 10 am Defense- full gear 10:50 am Gatorade 11:15- 12:15 Special Teams in helmets & shoulder pads 12:30-1:30 lunch 2:15-4:15 Offense- full gear unless it was too hot. Then it was helmets and shoulder pads. We had our conditioning test on Tuesday. Wednesday & Thursday were 3-a-days. Friday was one practice. Monday & Tuesday were 3-a-days. I do think the extra recovery time built in was good for our kids and helped to prevent any heat injury/illness. Tough days but good days. And, we were ready to play in the heat. With all the restrictions, my preference would be a later start date. We are not as prepared as we use to be for the heat in early season games.
  19. Here is Coach Jones returning a kick off for a TD against Tennessee in 2005. The KY All Stars won that game 41-27. Tim Masthay put every kickoff in the endzone for KY. TN put them all in the endzone but this one. David Jones got it on the one yard line and took it to the house. Photo credit to @theguru! Good luck to Coach Jones and his Phelps team this season!
  20. The great game I remember the best was 10/10/1969, Boyle 8, Danville 6. The Rebels won on a blocked punt/safety in the endzone at Centre College. Considering 0-10 seasons in 67 & 68, it was a huge win over an Admiral team that included Leonard Coulter. I can't begin to describe how wonderful the 1969 season was at Boyle. I can't begin to describe how horrific the 1970 season became after the death of Robert Allen Yankey. It went from a fairy tale to a nightmare. Robert Allen was a great young man and an inspiration to so many, and still is for many of us to this day.
  21. Coach Dan Haley was an offensive line guru. I am excited for Coach Wallace and his new challenge. He will do a great job at St. X!
  22. These are sheets from the banquet program, 1972. It's identical to pages from 1971 and consistent with the programs from 1969 & 1970... so this info should be accurate.
