  4. Caldwell loses Sindelar to graduation and doesn't miss a beat. The Burns kid has the makings of a good HS QB. FS couldn't stop the passing game. On offense FS had a few good long runs but it wasn't enough. Game turned on a disastrous 3-minute stretch at the end of the 2nd. and beginning of the 3rd quarter when Caldwell scored 3 straight touchdowns. Trailing 12-7, FS had sacked Burns on fourth down but a face mask penalty gave the Tigers a first down which led to a score and a 20-7 halftime lead. Caldwell scored in 57 seconds to start the third quarter, then FS fumbled the ball which was returned inside the 5 and Caldwell scored again. FS had 2 TD's called back on penalties and had a 50 yard run negated by a holding call on the other side of the field. Caldwell had several penalties too but they were able to overcome theirs. Caldwell defense is not getting much attention but they should. FS had trouble running inside on them. After several turnovers last week against Christian Co., Caldwell had none against FS, while FS had 2. Very sloppy game by FS but Caldwell is the real deal. Isaiah Hall was the standout for FS as he had TD runs of 47 and 75 yards. One positive for FS is that I think they had a few starters out on defense for various reasons, so maybe they can rebound from this.
  5. From looking at the thread of the Christian-Caldwell game last week, it seems like there were several turnovers by both teams. If Caldwell is turnover-prone, FS can take advantage. I'll say FS 27-21.

  7. SW was very impressive tonight. Their defensive front seven was swarming the ball all game long. Their running game was very good as well, as the QB had several good runs as did the RB. John Hardin had good athletes, but too many penalties and a costly fumble early which SW ran back for a score. SW is very well coached and disciplined.
  8. I had predicted 48-0 FS in the prediction thread. Ehhh, not quite. Portland was much better than I thought they would be. Their QB was really good running the read option, and they had a small but fast RB. Their linemen were pretty good as well. I think Portland will win more than one game this year, for a while I was afraid it might be this game. FS lost the turnover battle 2-0, with a stripped from behind fumble on a 30 yard run ending one drive and a bad decision on a pass that was intercepted ending another drive. Our junior QB making his first start played well, had one pass barely overthrown and the one pick. He made a beautiful pass about 30 yards downfield for the first TD of the game. Not many passes thrown tonight as the Cats stuck to the ground. Portland's defense played well, FS didn't get many long plays, but got a lot of 7-8 yard runs that seemed to wear down the Panthers. FS defense gave up 3 or 4 long runs and one long pass to convert a 3rd and 17. Portland fans should be optimistic, looks like things there may be headed back up. Officiating seemed good tonight for the most part, never can tell what you might get from the zebras in Tennessee.

  10. I have been watching FS football for about 30 years, maybe missed 10 games in the last 20 years. I didn't get to see Joker Phillips, Kerry Baird, Bear Stanley, and the rest of them from the glory years of the mid 70s to early 80s. FS has always been a run first team except for the early years of Coach Schlosser's tenure there. I agree with Macdon- Deberry and Perkins were probably the 2 best passers while Coach Schlosser was there. Caudill was impressive in the scrimmage, but it is a small sample size and we will see. I will say that I was glad to see open receivers getting hit in the hands with the ball instead of watching it sail 10 feet over their heads-- got me a little excited. Not the best running backs ever at FS, but the deepest collection of them.
  11. 15 years ago, Portland went 15-0 and won the Tennessee state championship in Class 3A in the midst of a 27-game winning streak. They were dominant back then, rarely having a close game. However, the departure of Coach Roger Perry a few years ago and the rising population and reclassification of the team to a higher class have led to hard times for the Panthers. I can't find their recent schedules just now, but I don't think they have even won a game the past 2 or 3 years, if they have, they haven't won many. F-S has more good running backs this year than I have ever seen, and more importantly, may have the most accurate passer I have ever seen at F-S. The Wing-T is still the offense of choice for the Wildcats, but expect to see more passing this year. Unless Portland has had a sudden influx of talent, this game will get ugly fast. Maybe a running clock by halftime. If Portland scores on the first string defense, I will be surprised. I'll say FS 48-0.
  12. F-S lost its QB, but has a junior QB who may prove to be even better. He played anywhere they could get him on the field last year and is a 3 sport athlete. They only had 8 seniors last year I think. F-S always has speed, the difference between their usual good teams and their great teams is size in the lines, which they don't always have. My nephew was the center on the 09 and 10 teams, and he was 250 lbs., the biggest one on the team. Hard for them to beat teams who have comparable speed but are also bigger in the line. Smaller lines can work if you pass a lot and pass quickly, but F-S doesn't do that. A really good team is going to be 3rd place in this district, and the 4th place team can make some noise.
  13. Tale of two halves. Madisonville fumbled on the first play of the game. FS scored in 4 plays. 7-0. Teams trade scores, 21-14 FS at the half. FS no turnovers or penalties in 1st half, Madisonville with the fumble and several drive-killing penalties. FS returns 2nd half kickoff to the Madisonville 32, but fumbles on the next play. Maroons take next play 80 yards to the house. 21-21. Teams trade punts, but FS muffs a punt which is recovered by Madisonville on the FS 12. 3 plays later, Maroons 28-21. Another fumble with under 3 minutes to go kills a potential game-tying drive for FS, Maroons score last TD with just over a minute to go. 2nd half- FS 4 turnovers, several penalties, Madisonville no turnovers and only a few penalties. I had said in the prediction thread that if FS played smart football with few mistakes, they should win. They did that for a half, but that's not enough against a good team. Madisonville has plenty of talent, not much of a passing game but should give Owensboro fits, maybe even pull off the upset. Good luck to the Maroons the rest of the way. Thanks to Coach Preston and the Wildcats for a fun season. There is a lot of promise for the near future of FS football.
  14. FS had their way with Greenwood, while Madisonville barely beat Greenwood. FS 2 sloppiest games all year (penalties and turnovers) were wins over Greenwood and Hopkinsville. If FS plays smart football with few mistakes as they have most of the season, they will be hard to beat. Madisonville has brought 2 teams with more talent to FS in '11 and '13, but FS won both games. I'll say FS 27-21.
  15. Truthfully, no matter what classification or playoff system we have, there will be people who don't like it. But I do enjoy the discussions about it, and apparently many others do, too.
  16. Of course, that solution would still have left the Fultons in the same class as Mayfield all those years, so it wouldn't be a perfect fix either.
  17. Good point. They should be in class 0A. A few years ago, I counted about 50 or 60 schools which were the only school in their county, that may have changed by now. If there are only going to be 30-something schools per class anyway, split these into 2 classes by enrollment, then make 4 classes out of the rest of the schools. Call it division one and division two like Tennessee, and the Fultons could still be class A division two.
  18. only schools which are the only high school in their county? Had this thought after reading the Beechwood-Bracken Co. thread. It explained that the two schools have roughly the same male enrollment, but Beechwood has about 50 more football players than the Polar Bears. One explanation for this is the city school has all its boys living close to the school, not involved in farming which keeps some boys in rural communities from playing sports. Also some county schools have students which live 15-20 miles from school which could hinder them from playing. It is also easy for schools like Mayfield, which is the seat of the geographically huge Graves County, to draw from a much larger county population which might choose to go to the city school instead of the county school. If teams like Ballard Memorial, Butler County, Hancock County, Todd County, etc., could compete against similar schools which are the only school in the county, it would be a more level playing field. How many of the traditional football powerhouses at any level in Kentucky are county schools? Not very many.
  19. The move to six classes was welcomed by us FS fans, mainly because it meant Bowling Green would be in a different class. The deep playoff runs of Warren East, Allen County-Scottsville and Franklin-Simpson in recent years likely would not have happened in the 4 class system because BG would have been in our district. I would like to see a 4 class system again if there were a provision for the more successful programs to move up in class after winning so many regional or state titles. In other words, classification could be based not only on a school's male student population, but also on the relative success of the school. With that being said, it is funny that a state with so many classes in football and so few schools in each class is still by far the biggest state in the country to have only one class in basketball, softball, baseball, soccer or volleyball.
  20. This sounds like the state title game in 09 for Lone Oak (same coach, basically the same program). Why let off the gas when the game is still in doubt? It's one thing to run up the score against a weak opponent, but Boyle Co. in 09 and Manual last night were far from weak.
  21. Final. Running clock with 11 minutes left in 2nd quarter. 48-0 at halftime. No injuries in the game as far as I know.
  22. I agree with you, Little Ram. The first round could be eliminated and teams could be allowed to play 11 regular season games. The #4 seeds who have to travel 2-3 hours to get destroyed could replace that game with a closer opponent they might have a chance to beat. The top two teams could advance to the playoffs like it was in the late 80's. With this in mind, the 6A super district should be broken up and dispersed among the weaker Louisville teams. The only drawback is that every so often there are really good teams in tough districts that wind up in third place, as I think Paducah Tilghman was when they won state a few years back. As far as FS is concerned, they will play a Hopkins Central team that hasn't won a game in three years, and their potential second round opponent, Madisonville, will probably beat the same Allen County team they have beaten in the first round for 3-4 years straight now. It will be a shame if someone on those squads gets hurt in first round games that are really foregone conclusions.
  23. FS rolled early in the game, scoring TDs on each of its first three drives. Hoptown could not stop the rushing attack early. Game turned when FS fumbled at its own 8, then Hoptown scored on the next play. FS led 20-13 at the half. Hoptown's starting QB left the game I think after the 1st quarter, after the game their coach said he injured his shoulder but could probably play next week. FS's #20, Jerry Billups, was injured and left the game in the 2nd quarter with a slight limp. He played a few snaps in the 4th but did not finish the game, didn't seem to be too badly hurt, hopefully he can play next week. Hoptown made adjustments at the half and took a 27-20 lead early in the 4th. FS made a long drive to tie the game at 27 with just under 2 minutes to play. Hoptown went 3 and out and ran out the clock to go to overtime. 1st OT both teams scored 7. Hoptown kicked a field goal with 4th and goal at the 5 in the 2nd OT. FS wound up with 4th and goal at the 3, and faked a run, QB rolls out to the right and hits a wide open TE for the game winner.
  24. Russellville's big #12, Desmond Quarles, did not play in the second half. The Panthers couldn't get much up the middle after he left the game. They hung with SW until the half and it would probably have been tied at the half but a Russellville scoop and score fumble return was called back for a holding penalty. Russellville kept the ball but was intercepted in the end zone. I don't think any team in Kentucky who only dresses 30-35 players could beat the Panthers. They have only lost to teams who have double the roster they do.
