Yes it was and I did not know that till I read his book, which I highly recommend.

I think generally 95% of the coaches I have seen are that way.....and that is the way it should be. It is the idiotic 5% that give the rest a bad name.

That is exactly what I have always told my kids, and it has worked out, in that they have learned to work through problems and see that is about the TEAM not the individual. Most people who are concerned with the team help regardless of wether their child is on the team or not. Sometimes the kid will pass through while the parent is helping, but under no circumstances should the parent feel like he/she is owed anything, they are doing it for the team and they should not put the coach in a position where they put pressure on him to play the kid. It is wrong for the parent to think that because they are helping the program that they are owed anything anyway!!!

I think 4CHS has it pretty close. Whitley has earned its way there with a 9-5 record and they have played some pretty good teams close. After beating a good and athletic Clinton TN team in the Wayne Tourny they showed they are growing up, and may even deserve a higher (by 1 or 2) ranking. Knox Central, like Whitley ran into a buzz saw in the Wayne tourny, playing ST X from Ohio. Knox was worn down when they started the game, I would have liked to see them play them on fresh legs, like Whitley having to play Warren Central after playing a game just 4 hours earlier. The Top 2 are pretty solid in those positions and far ahead of everyone else but the rest are pretty even, in that on a given night I think if they play any of those teams could win. Till Lynn Camp beats a good team they really can't earn their way there. But they are close.

Whitley County advanced to the 5th place game beating Clinton (TN) 67-64. The Colonels led thoughout the game but gave up the lead with about 4 minutes in the game. With all their posts fouled out of the game and Jake Lowrie missing in parts unknown, Whitley went with 5 guards. Clinton had two big men in the middle, but Whitley did a good job with help side defense and made some nice plays. With Whiltey down by 2 and under 40 seconds to play they forced a turnover, then got fouled and tied with 2 free throws by Derek Lovett. Another forced Turnover and Jamie Lebanion made 1 of 2. Whitley with great defense did not allow a shot, but did commit a foul with under 3 seconds to play and held on the for the win. Yesterday, they ran into a VERY athletic Warren Central team. Whitley had already played one game on Thursday and Warren Central was fresh not having played. Whitley led after one quarter 15-13 but Warren Central pulled away wearing down the already tired Colonels. They Colonels fell from the Winner bracket by 28 points. In the morning game Whitley dominated a team that only last week they struggled with. Last week Casey County jumped out the a 21-6 lead. This time around it was the Colonels jumpnig out t the big lead and it was one they would not give up as the led by as many as 31 and ended up winning by 16. With the two wins and one loss the Colonels are now 9-5 going into the last day of the tourny in Wayne County.

Not to take anything away from Mike Deaton but he was only there one year....he may have given them some toughness....heck they had to be tough to last under him, but Baker has brought them together and has them believing in themselves individually and as a team. No easy task for a young team that at the high school level had not tasted much success. Make no mistake about, this is Chris Bakers team, and he has got them playing well, he has the respect of the administration, the parents and the team.

Rock played very hard and with alot of intensity. Their defense was VERY good and they did a good job of getting in the passing lanes. Their record does not do them justice.

Whiltey has been able to come back from some large deficits this year and I think that is due in large part to Baker being more positive in his approach to the kids than Deaton last year. Regardless of the situation he is positive and the kids are buying into that. They are getting tougher mentally and physically, Rock was very physical and the Colonels responded well.

Is Donnie McFarland still in coaching? His Dad used to send me to Creekmore's to get him a cold Pepsi back when I was a pup.

Casey Beat Leslie County pretty handly. South Beat North pretty easily.

Colonels get a nice win over a nice Rockcastle team. Jamie Lebanion had a break out game for him and Mike Storms had another nice game. Ben Prewitt did a terrific job handling the pressure from Rock and got the ball to guys in situations where they could have some success. Overall Prewitt maybe was the most consistant player thoughout the tourny for the Colonels. Rock played hard but looked like they got worn down as the game went on. Both teams had some nice defensive plays and some over the top offensive plays. Whiltey finishes the tourney at 2-2 with good efforts in the two losses. The Colonels continue to make progress.

Obviously you are a fan of the movie Stripes with Bill Murray.

You know I think that officials are not at the level they used to be and that is going to be a given...much like X in algebra..LOL That being said every game someone could gripe but look a it this way...play hard give it your all and let the chips fall where they may.....that way if you leave it all on the floor nobody can take that away from you.....and should you play well enough then the officials won't matter. BTW I was not at the game, but have heard several comments on officiating in all the games so far. Now I thought that there were some bad calls in the WC/SL game but Whitley put that aside and still played hard but lost, so be it. They did not make excuses, they saw things they did well and things that they did badly, but even with the bad calls had they done the things right they still could have won.....I was impressed with that attitude.

South jumped out to a 14 point lead in the first quarter and Whitley faught back to a one point deficit at the half on the strength of a longer than half court shot by Ben Prewitt. Once again the Colonels came with a total team effort and played hard. Matt St. John was the difference in the game. When he was out Whitley could score and keep South from scoring, when he was in the game Whitley could score but it was much tougher and they could not keep South from scoring. Whitley showed that they are getting better every time out, and really are committed to getting better. Mike Crawford and Mike Storms played well with 22 points and 7 rebounds between them. Jamie Lebanion and Ben Prewitt played well leading the transition offense to several easy baskets against the press of South. Almost every player that dressed not only played but contributed to the Colonel effort in this game. Good competitive, physical game and one that was fun to watch!!!

South may win the game but it won't be easy, Whitley plays too hard and brings a ton of intensity every game to give up and give any team an easy win. I don't know about any officiating in the previous game but Whitley will play hard and give a great effort regardless of calls or the game situation. This team has some momentum and will give it all they have.

The Colonels get another nice win on the road in the Hoopin It Up in Laurel County. They came from 12 down in the first half and played a strong second half, using their defense to create turnovers and offense. Derek Lovett came off the bench and really gave a lift. Mike Storms and Mike Crawford had big nights on the boards. Ben Prewitt hit some big free throws down the stretch, and Jeremy Daniels had some big time steals and deflections. To say it was a total team effort would be an understatement. Whitley did not get the lead till late in the game and kept fighting and Jordan McCumbers hit one free throw with about 10 seconds left, but Whitley got the rebound off the miss (Storms) but turned it over with 1.7 seconds left, a shot a the buzzer missed and the Colonels move on to face the winner of South Laurel/Walton Verona.

I heard a "great" coach say "I want those kids to fear me, that way they would kill for me" I heard a "average" coach say "I want those kids to love me, that wy they would die for me" Great being defined by his past record. Average being defined by concensus since he was a new coach. I don't know which one was right but both ended up having the same amount of success, but the great coach is gone and the average coach is still there.

You know, that might be one of the most astute points I have seen on BGP in sometime, in that your regular season should expose your weakness so that you can work and get better.

I think that the schedule that they are playing is in line with the teams that they have had in the past. It is no secret that they have been bad and everyone has had several good laughs at Whitley and questioned why they were bad. Now that they are moving in the right direction everyone wants to say they are playing a light schedule. Really it is the same schedule that they have been playing for sometime, with the exception of the better tourneys that they are in. In some ways you could say that they have upgraded their schedule. Heck Lynn Camp dropped them, so they must be bad....surely they would have been kept on that schedule if they were better than a Berea or J. Frank White Academy, right? So we have established that they are bad, then why should they play a killer schedule?

Storms wanted to concentrate on baseball and now he is going to do both. He has made great strides in the past few games and is shaking off the rust. He really will be a major contributor by the time the district tourney rolls around. I disagree with it being a light schedule. Corbin twice, South Laurel twice, yes I know they have to play them, the Hoopin it up, the 5th Monticello back tourny where they could meet Warren Central, they have some good games in the new year, It is a challenging schedule for them at this time. One senior, a couple of Juniors, a bunch of sophs, and a ton of freshmen. They don't need a killer schedule.

That was the story I heard, and believe it to be true from everything I have seen and heard. Good ridence to blue rubbish I say!!!!

Blue was a color change for the Jackets., in the sixties and 70's Williamsburg donned the Orange, Black and white. With the arrival of Bob Rose, it went to straight orange and White. For some strange reason, Williamsburg added blue to the mix in the late 80's early 90's. So when you get right down to it, it is old school for the Jackets to wear orange and black and white. Most alumni really did not care for the blue with the orange, and are glad to see the change, or at least the removal of the blue and going back to the roots of Williamsburg.

I don't know if you can 5-2 piling up the wins, but it has been a while since Whiltey was at this point in the season with 5 wins. I thought Whitley played South really tough and had they made some of the layups they missed they could have made that game more interesting. You can't say how the game would have unfolded, but I would have like to have seen it. When the Whiltey offense is clicking it is really fun to watch. Mike Storms has been a solid addition to the team and Mike Crawford is starting to play better. Coach Baker just throws waves of players at you all at about the same level. I still think their learning curve is very steep and they will continue to improve as the season goes on.
