  1. Whiltey escapes with the 3 point win. Williamsburg played hard and Whitley looked flat early but gutted it out and found a way to win. Cunningham played great for Williamsburg, while Jamie Lebanion picked up the Colonels on his shoulders in the second half. Ben Prewitt had another solid game, running the offense. Whitley could not hit shots early and Williamsburg did, they really out hustled the Colonels for most of the game, but in the last 3-4 minutes of the game, Whitley held their composure while Williamsburg paniced a bit. In the last 20 seconds, they dribbled for 15 seconds before Robinson called a time out. I was impressed with the fact that Whitley never seemed to panic, they just kept plugging a way and finally took the lead and held it. Sometimes you have to win ugly and win ugly on the road, which the Colonels did. Whitley secures the third seed in the district. Colonels get the 10th win of the season and Baker gets his 100th win as a Head Coach.

  5. Knox Central has a great starting 5, and Brown #2 off the bench is pretty solid offensively and really good defensively, but after that they are a bit shakey. I know that JBS is ranked pretty high but I have to go with KC on this one. The one problem I see that if JBS has a strong post, if could give KC some trouble, because the big guys for KC tend to float around the premiter and don't have true post skills.
  6. You probably right in that she may have been pushed but she was also out of control. IF she was being pushed it wasn't any different from the other stuff that had been going on from both sides the whole game. The refs can't change the way the call it in the last ten seconds. That is why I made the statement about how bad the officiating is in the 13th. In that respect if they refs had called it better the whole game who knows how it may have turned out. I saw refs from several other regions over the break and the differnce was amazing. To fair to the kids on both sides is all I would llike to see.
  7. I would agree that there were a LARGE number of bad calls during this game but I for one was not surprised. The officiating in the 13th both boys and girls is not what the kids deserve. The sad thing is that one person thinks you should get bad calls when you are the visitor because his team is going to get bad calls when they go on the road. I don't think that should be the way it is, it should be a fairly called game regardless. As for the call on Rogers, I honestly could not see the play but she was out of control and trying to draw the foul intiating the contact as she went out of my field of vision. Corbin did not do a very good job setting up the last play and it appeared it was just helter skelter. But in all honesty they let both teams play too physical, in fact I used to like girls basketball better because you actually saw basketball not shoving matches, but now it looks like girls ball is going the way of boys basketball. If she did charge I would have been surprised they called and if it was a block I would have been surpised they called it, as I don't think the refs had the inclination to settle the game. I give Corbin credit, they came back from a double diget deficite twice and made it a great game.
  8. Jackson County rode the play of the Brumback to the victory over the Colonels. He is a very solid player with a nice set of offensive moves, and the offensive really is set up to put him in a position to score and he delivers for the Generals more times than not. Whitley played hard and well at times but Jackson had the answers every time Whitley made a run. Whitley had the Jackson lead to 2 with about a minute to go but could not get the score they needed to when they needed. Free throws widened the margin and made it look worse than what it was. Both teams played really hard and you had to be impressed with the Colonels who were facing a team with ten seniors while they only had one. I think that this was a game that showed that on a given night the young Colonels can compete with most everyone in the region but there is still some work to be done.
  9. Jim Black is the head coach and is going to be the head coach. Regardless of the stuff that floats around, Jim Black is rock solid. The kids are in the weight room and getting bigger and stronger. Look for some changes on the staff, and in some other areas also. Whitley will be a year older and that should help, but maybe they can get over some the bad luck that they had last year. Losing your starting QB which you have worked with through passing camps and summer practice and to lose him in the fourth week, stunted the growth of the offense and hurt the team in several other areas. They are past that now. To get better they will have to continue to grow offensively. They were almost 50/50 run/pass in the number of plays and yardage. The line should be solid with four starters retuning across the front. They have to replace Jake Lowe at Center and Shawn Baird at TE but the core of the offense is still there. Defensively they return maybe the two best defenders in the district, Ed Lawson at cornor and Cody Jones at strong safety. The defense needs alot of work but they have some kids to plug in who can get the job done. Anthony Rider is turning into a really solid free safety. Spring ball should tell alot about just how far they have come in the off season. Alex Patrick (much to the chagrin of Williamsburg) will now be eligible after sitting out a year. He is an athlete who can help in several different areas. There are also several young kids who had a tremendous amount of success last year at the JV level who will be able to step in. All in All look for a much improved edition of the Colonels.
  10. It would appear that offensively that they are VERY good, but defensively they are VERY bad. If LC could play a little more defense THEN they could be a player in the region.
  11. Rock seems to struggle at times offensively but the defense that they play (very good) allows them to get by with a very average offense. As their offense comes around they will get more "W"s than "L"s.
  12. Certainly a shame that Barton has left the team. He is a fine you talant. On the bright side he is only an eighth grader and can still salvage his basketball career. Would not surprise me to see him in a Corbin uniform next year.
  13. Whitley survives Corbin in a game which saw the Lady Colonels get an 11 point lead in the second half but squandered it with bad shots. Corbin to their credit kept coming back but Whitley helped the Corbin cause by missing free throws, lay ups and just generally not playing very well. The most disappointing thing was the less than sportsmanlike play from Corbin, which at times was border line dirty, in particuliar a charge call on 24 who threw a fore arm to the chest of a Whitley player and a foul at the end of the game in which the Corbin player pushed to the ground a Lady Colonel. This coupled with the Corbin girl kicking a Whitey girl when they played at Corbin is very disappointing from a fans standpoint. In any event it was a hard played game and one which saw Corbin more than likely fall to third in the district seeding.
  14. I heard that Barton had left the team for Williamsburg.... Corbin by a LARGE margin.
  15. I think Whitley deserves to be number 10, they have played a tougher schedule than Bell and 8 games in 10 days is tough. Casey and Rock are both in the top 10 in the 12th and Whitley hs beaten both of them. I would like to see WC/KC both on fresh legs, KC may still win becuase that present some match up problems for the Colonels but to say that the score in the Wayne Tourny is represtative is a bit premature.
  16. Yes it was and I did not know that till I read his book, which I highly recommend.
  17. I think generally 95% of the coaches I have seen are that way.....and that is the way it should be. It is the idiotic 5% that give the rest a bad name.
  18. That is exactly what I have always told my kids, and it has worked out, in that they have learned to work through problems and see that is about the TEAM not the individual. Most people who are concerned with the team help regardless of wether their child is on the team or not. Sometimes the kid will pass through while the parent is helping, but under no circumstances should the parent feel like he/she is owed anything, they are doing it for the team and they should not put the coach in a position where they put pressure on him to play the kid. It is wrong for the parent to think that because they are helping the program that they are owed anything anyway!!!
  19. I think 4CHS has it pretty close. Whitley has earned its way there with a 9-5 record and they have played some pretty good teams close. After beating a good and athletic Clinton TN team in the Wayne Tourny they showed they are growing up, and may even deserve a higher (by 1 or 2) ranking. Knox Central, like Whitley ran into a buzz saw in the Wayne tourny, playing ST X from Ohio. Knox was worn down when they started the game, I would have liked to see them play them on fresh legs, like Whitley having to play Warren Central after playing a game just 4 hours earlier. The Top 2 are pretty solid in those positions and far ahead of everyone else but the rest are pretty even, in that on a given night I think if they play any of those teams could win. Till Lynn Camp beats a good team they really can't earn their way there. But they are close.
  20. Whitley County advanced to the 5th place game beating Clinton (TN) 67-64. The Colonels led thoughout the game but gave up the lead with about 4 minutes in the game. With all their posts fouled out of the game and Jake Lowrie missing in parts unknown, Whitley went with 5 guards. Clinton had two big men in the middle, but Whitley did a good job with help side defense and made some nice plays. With Whiltey down by 2 and under 40 seconds to play they forced a turnover, then got fouled and tied with 2 free throws by Derek Lovett. Another forced Turnover and Jamie Lebanion made 1 of 2. Whitley with great defense did not allow a shot, but did commit a foul with under 3 seconds to play and held on the for the win. Yesterday, they ran into a VERY athletic Warren Central team. Whitley had already played one game on Thursday and Warren Central was fresh not having played. Whitley led after one quarter 15-13 but Warren Central pulled away wearing down the already tired Colonels. They Colonels fell from the Winner bracket by 28 points. In the morning game Whitley dominated a team that only last week they struggled with. Last week Casey County jumped out the a 21-6 lead. This time around it was the Colonels jumpnig out t the big lead and it was one they would not give up as the led by as many as 31 and ended up winning by 16. With the two wins and one loss the Colonels are now 9-5 going into the last day of the tourny in Wayne County.
  21. Not to take anything away from Mike Deaton but he was only there one year....he may have given them some toughness....heck they had to be tough to last under him, but Baker has brought them together and has them believing in themselves individually and as a team. No easy task for a young team that at the high school level had not tasted much success. Make no mistake about, this is Chris Bakers team, and he has got them playing well, he has the respect of the administration, the parents and the team.
  22. Rock played very hard and with alot of intensity. Their defense was VERY good and they did a good job of getting in the passing lanes. Their record does not do them justice.
  23. Whiltey has been able to come back from some large deficits this year and I think that is due in large part to Baker being more positive in his approach to the kids than Deaton last year. Regardless of the situation he is positive and the kids are buying into that. They are getting tougher mentally and physically, Rock was very physical and the Colonels responded well.
