Senior Night at Bishop Brossart is always a nice but sad affair as you celebrate the careers of some of your finest athletes , but at the same time realize their careers are soon coming to the end. Of course hopefully that wont happen for three more weeks after the State Tournament. Tonight the Lady 'Stangs honored the careers of Molly Williams and Taylor Hardy in fine fashion. There is no better way to send off your seniors on Senior Night than to win and that's just what the now 23-11 Lady 'Stangs did in come from behind fashion to beat Notre Dame Academy for the second time this year 4-3. It marked the 8th time this year the pollsters have been wrong. Brossart has recorded 8 wins in 9 games against teams that are ranked ahead of them at the time. The only team ranked above them to record a win so far has been St. Henry. In that game even BBHS held a 2-0 lead after 5 innings before falling 4-2. Tonight marked the 10th straight year Brossart won their Senior Night game. The Pandas fell to 21-9. During one stretch the Pandas had won 19 of 22 games and all of their losses recently have been to top teams Ryle, Conner and now Brossart. Earlier this season Brossart also beat Notre Dame 7-3. It didn't look good early as a trio of Panda sophomores created havoc in the first inning. Laura Finke opened with a single to left and then scored on a stolen base and throwing error of the bat of Hanna Sullivan. Then Maria Schaefer unloaded a bomb over the left field fence and suddenly Notre Dame was on top 3-0. However that would be the end for the Panda attack. Brossart got on the board in the second when Karlie Shackelford reached on an infield hit and then courtesy runner Caroline Woeste later raced home on a Gretchen Trumbo sacrifice hit. In the third Erica Riedeman reached on an infield hit and then took second on a wild pitch. A sharp single by Maria Greis made it 3-2. In the sixth inning Allie Anstead reached on a single and then pinch runner Jamie Reis took second on another wild pitch. Shackelford singled again to push home Woeste and suddenly it was a tie game. Meanwhile Shackelford and great defense was shutting down the Pandas with only 2 hits the last six innings. A great throw by Shannon Kremer nailed speedster Laura Finke at third to cut down a rally in the fifth and a Shack strikeout of Jones ended a two on rally in the 6th. Brossart retired Notre Dame 1-2-3 in the 7th for their 23rd win. That set the stage for bottom of the seventh heroics when Senior Molly Williams opened with a single and advanced to second on a Greis groundout. When Williams attempted to take third a Panda throw past the bag enabled Molly to scamper home with the game winner. A perfect win on Senior Night with a team dinner following at Barleycorns. Tomorrow Brossart will shoot for their 9th win over teams ranked ahead of them this season when they travel to Hebron for their annual end of the year tilt with Number 2 ranked Conner. The Lady 'Stangs have played a tough schedule this week with Bourbon Co. Nicholas Co., Greenup County, Mason Co., St. Henry, Notre Dame and Conner to better prepare them for the post season. In the 37th District nest week a win over the Silver Grove/Calvary winner will send them to the Regional for the 22nd straight year. :ylsuper: Molly Williams

The Bishop Brossart “Defeating Those Ranked Ahead Tour” continued on Wednesday afternoon at Dixie Heights as the Lady 'Stangs won their 6th game in a row over teams that were ranked ahead of them in the polls. Somewhere above Rodney Dangerfield is looking down on the 20-7 team (7-0 in the NKAC) and thinking “I know how you feel.” Today's “Titanic Struggle” as Marty Brennaman might call it set a new Bishop Brossart school record for longest game lasting 11 innings and breaking last year's 10th inning frog strangler with Bracken County at NKU. Brossart looked like it was going to have an easy time with Dixie pitcher Bailie Spencer scoring three times and banging out 6 hits thru the first two innings, but Spencer settled down and locked into a good dual with Brossart freshman Karlie Shackelford. Shackelford allowed just one hit thru four innings and led 3-0. The Lady 'Stangs scored in the first when Erica Riedemann singled and came home on Maria Greis' grounder after Molly Williams' ground rule double to right. They tacked on two more in the second after Allie Anstead was hit and Taylor Hardy reached first after a strikeout. Those two came home on an error and a Riedeman infield hit and it was 3-0. Dixie Heights scored on a close call at first that should have been out number three in the fifth and cut it to 3-1. They added two in the sixth with two out to tie it 3-3 when Designated Player Haley Delaney delivered a clutch hit past just past Anstead and it was 3-3. That scored remained til the 10th when both teams were forced to go to the International Tiebreaker. Brossart first then Dixie executed it to perfection and entered the 11th with a 4-4 tie. In the top of the 11th Allie Anstead was placed on second and on the bunt raced to third where Dixie made a wild throw sending Anstead home with what proved to be the game winner. In the bottom of the 11th Dixie placed their runner on second and she advanced immediately on a wild pitch with no out. The next batter went to third baseman Gretchen Trumbo. Trumbo froze the runner and went to second baseman Molly Williams covering first for out one. The runner at third broke for home and Williams fired a perfect strike to home where firstbaseman Maria Greis was covering on the bunt rotation and tagged the runner out at home for out number two. Dixie then got two hits and with two outs had the game tying and game winning runs on second and third before Shackelford jammed Bella Lopez on a pitch she lofted into foul territory at first where Williams made the game ending running over the shoulder grab to end the game. Dixie falls to 15-9 on the season while Brossart has yet another 20 win season for new Head Coach Tom Baynum. Baynum is only the second Brossart coach to win 20 plus games in his first season and should be a leading candidate for “Coach of the Year” honors after the team lost several key players from last year's squad. We have played every game the last nine years and won 8 out of 9 NKAC Titles so we should. Anything other than that would be an upset then wouldn't it? We have beat Salzer and St. Henry three straight years.

:deadhorse:LOL Just FYI Coach Baynum and the Lady 'Stangs offered to go to St. Henry tonight and play them after our game with Dixie Heights and they declined. When they forgot to put the tarp on yesterday they emailed and said "lets play Wednesday". We agreed but they said no now so there you go. :ohbrother: Remember it was St. Henry who forgot the tarp and cancelled not us.

:deadhorse: LOL The suspension was up at 1:55 and we didn't get the email, yes email, til 1:58. We actually learned of it from the St. Henry Website. We get out of school at 2 and we also have 5 8th graders at three different feeder schools. It's kaos. The Coach said they forgot to put the tarp on after their road game with Cooper the night before. With one week to go and Senior Awards Dinners, Graduations, Senior Night end of the year banquets and both schools with a lot of big games it may be hard to find a mutual date. Worst case scenario its Co-Champs since both schools have played all their other games and are both 7-0. I know we have 10 games between tomorrow and next Saturday in addition to the set school activities. Next week we are without 3-4 of the younger kids too because of a play. We are looking at some dates.

How good is Greenup County what are they like?

Lawnboy must have fell off the bucket and hit his/her head. If St. Henry had remembered to put the tarp on last night at St. Henry we could have found out today. However since they didn't the game was cancelled as we read on their website and didn't get a call. :ohbrother:

It's a wide open tourney. I like how they say it will be seeded based on how everyone does on Friday yet no one has seen that "seeding formula."

We play no one who starts varsity. Ultimately those who do hurt themselves in the long run because their younger kids don't get the experience.

It's always good when you don't have a particularly good day hitting but still find ways to win. That was true today as Bishop Brossart's highly productive middle of the lineup managed just a 2 for 19 hitting day but Brossart still defeated Newport at Newport 6-1. The Lady 'Stangs managed solid defense and timely hitting to win their 19th game and topping a much improved 14-6 Lady Cat team. The win enabled them to remain undefeated in the NKAC. They are now 7-0 with one game remaining. Tricia Kramer got things rolling in the first with a single and a stolen base. She scored on an infield hit off the bat of Erica Riedeman and a throwing error. The game remained 1-0 til the fourth as Brossart left 5 runners on base in scoring position. Taylor Hardy singled with two out in the fourth and moved to second on another Newport miscue and then raced home on a single by designated hitter Emily Greis. Perhaps the big hit of the game was in the fifth leading 2-0. Molly Williams tripled and Maria Greis reached on an infield single. Then, with one out, Allie Anstead drilled a single to center to score both runners and make it 4-0. They tacked on two more in the sixth on Erica Riedeman's single and Molly Williams ground out to make it 6-0. Meanwhile, freshman pitcher Karlie Shackelford retired the first 15 Newport batters and had a 19 batter no hitter before Tyler singled thru the hole at short to lead off the seventh. Raleigh's single to left plated Tyler with their second hit and only run. Shack finished her 14th win against 6 losses off with a two hitter and struck out 6 while not walking a batter. The varsity is now 19-7 and will take a long weekend off before doing battle with St. Henry and Dixie Heights next week as well as the Bourbon County Invitational. The junior varsity team defeated Newport 21-1 in just three innings. Mary kay Reilly tossed the two hitter. 8th grader Riley Orth went three for four with 4 rbis, sophomore Jamie Reis went 3 for 4 with 3 rbis and a triple, and 8th grader Amanda Graus was 2 for 2 had two walks and 4 rbis. Over all Brossart won their 10th game banging out 17 hits. They play Cooper and Notre Dame tomorrow in the JV Tourney. Allie Anstead Pic:

Ryle is tough at home with that hard infield, but they are coming off being shut out 10-0 by Scott County. Conner is playing better than most right now. Id pick Conner at Conner but going with Ryle at Ryle

I vote yes of course softball should have it's own thread. After all more college scholarship money was granted by the NCAA to softball than any other sport. Plus you get to see more of all your favorite softball "personalities." :eek:

Death Valley at Highlands High School has been more like “Boot Hill” for Bishop Brossart fast pitch teams over the years. The games have always been close and a couple of times the Lady 'Stangs lost there. That was not to be today as freshman pitcher Karlie Shackelford not only held the Lady Birds to five hits but had a monster game offensively with three hits and five rbis to lead her team to an 8-2 win at Highlands. Bishop Brossart is now 18-6 while Highlands falls to 5-13. The win also keeps Brossart undefeated in the NKAC Division II race. The green and white jumped on the board in the first with Erica Riedeman and Maria Greis banging out two of the team's 15 hits for the game. Then with two outs Shackelford drilled a pitch to center for a two run double to make it 2-0. In the third Erica Riedeman and Molly Williams smacked singles and then with two out it was the “Shack Attack” once again as she smacked another shot to make it 4-0. Later, after Highlands closed the gap to 4-2 when Brossart made both of their two errors of the game, they roared back again in the fifth. Tricia Kramer lined a single and Molly Williams doubled to plate Kramer. Then for the third straight time Shackelford delivered to make it 6-2 with her fifth rbi of the game. Brossart snuffed some early rallies to shut down Highlands and picked up two more insurance runs in the seventh. Williams led off with a triple and then scored on a Maria Greis single. Later, with two outs again, Allie Anstead plated Greis with a laser to center to make it 8-2. Graybill had two big hits for Highlands but a nice play in the field by thirdbaseman Gretchen Trumbo stopped a rally in the 5th to retire the excellent eighthgrader. Trumbo went to her right near the line on a knee straightend up and made a strike to Greis to retire her. The game ended on a strikeout with Graybill on deck. Shackelford, who improves to 13-5 on the season, walked noen and struck out 2. She finished with 3 for 4 and 5 rbis along with a pair of doubles. Molly Williams also pounded out 3 hits, while Erica Riedeman and Allie Anstead had two apiece. In a shortended JV game because of the weather, Brossart beat Highlands 13-1 as Mary Kay Reilly won her 9th game. Amanda Lloyd had three hits and 4 rbis along with a double, while Riley Orth had three hits as well. Lauren Cookendorfer, Caroline Woeste and Amanda Graus each had two hits. In the easy win. It was a “Homecoming” of sorts for junior Tricia Kramer and freshman Karlie Shackelford as their Lady 'Stangs traveled to Campbell County High School for a big District seed game with the rival Lady Camels. Both had once played at Campbell County. In the end it was their new home that led the parade. Bishop Brossart controlled the game all the way in an easy 12-4 win. Campbell Co. in the Recorder last week talked about a “signature” win against someone like Brossart. That will have to wait til another opponent. On the day before Prom, a focused Brossart jumped out to an 8-3 lead and tacked on 4 more after Campbell County had closed to 8-4. Shackelford limited Campbell to just six hits over seven innings as she ran her record to 12-5 on the season. Kramer, meanwhile, scored 3 runs had two hits a base on balls and an rbi. Brossart improves to 17-6 overall while Campbell County falls to 6-8. The Big Green Machine fired it up offensively scoring 12 times on 12 hits following their 18 run production against Holmes the day before. The win was a decisive one for the District giving Bishop Brossart the Number 1 seed for the 37th District Tourney and a bye. Brossart finished 4-0 in seed games. They will play the winner of Silver Grove and Calvary Christian. Campbell Co. will be the three seed after falling to Scott 14-8 last week. A balanced attack led the Lady 'Stangs. Senior Molly Williams had two hits including a double and three rbis, Maria “Mama” Greis kept up her laser hitting finishing 3 for 4 with a double and two rbis. Gretchen Trumbo chipped in with two hits also. Seven BBHS players made the hit column. JUNIOR VARSITY In a game, this time that was completed, the Bishop Brossart junior varsity also traveled to Campbell Co. and after a slow start and trailing 5-0, they roared back to had the Lady Camels a 9-5 loss. The Lady 'Stangs scored 7 runs in the third inning and added one each in the fourth and fifth. Earlier in the year Campbell Co. had led Brossart in a suspended game Emily Greis had a great game for the Lady 'Stangs playing solid defense and collecting two hits, a double and rbi. Eighth Grade catcher Amanda Lloyd also had two hits and an rbi. It was a balanced team effort. “I told them after the game that we did what we needed to do. In this region this year getting the Number 1 seed is even more important,” stated Head Coach Tom Baynum. Tomorrow the Prom Cruise should be fun. :thumb: Karlie Shackelford

In an NKAC game that saw 17 players see action. Bishop Brossart cruised to an easy win over Holmes 18-9 in Covington. Seniors Molly Williams and Taylor Hardy led the offense that saw Williams go 3 for 4 with 3 rbis and a double, while Hardy went 3 for 4 with a walk and two rbis. to power 16-6 Brossart.
