  1. Not surprised by this score at all. Bellevue has a quality team. This sounds a lot like the game Bellevue played a few weeks ago against CovCath. If CovCath didn't get such a great effort by its starting pitcher, Bellevue wins that game. Congrats to NCC.
  2. How many wins does CovCath have at this point?
  3. Very well pitched game (or poor offense, take your pick) - I don't believe either team had a hit until the 4th.
  4. Last night was a good one for CCH baseball. The JV threw a no-no at Holy Cross and won 10 - 0, and the Freshmen won their first round game in the Frosh Regional against a very good Campbell Co. team!
  5. Yes. Last year, CCH came in to the seed game #1 and Holy Cross came in #6.
  6. It is almost freakish how similar the Colonels' results are from this year and last year. At this point last year, CovCath was 13 -1 and rated 18th in the state by the Coaches' Association. At this point, both this year's and last year's teams had beaten Holy Cross in a non-seed game by very similar scores (this year by a score of 6 - 3, and last year by a score of 8 - 3). At this point in the season, both teams had beaten Ohio power Hamilton Badin, NewCath, Conner, Ryle, Bishop Brossart, Simon Kenton and Cooper. This year's team beat Boyle County, while last year's team beat Louisville Trinity. Both teams' only loss - Dixie. So if you are looking for guidance, last year CovCath beat Boone in their first matchup by a score of 9 - 4.
  7. I believe that in order to predict the future, look to the past. These two played an early-season non-seed game last year. What happened then?
  8. From the Enquirer: "Holy Cross will certainly be pushed in its own district – the 35th – thanks to Covington Catholic returning eight starters and 21 of its 28 pitching victories....." Cov Cath lost 25% of its pitching victories from last year. Hard to say EVERYONE returns........ That said, just like last year, Cov Cath will certainly have the deepest staff around.
  9. The story has gone national, with coverage by USA Today, Yahoo! Sports, The Indianapolis Star, The Tucson Sun, among others. The USA Today story: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/preps/basketball/story/2012-01-24/Indiana-team-wins-with-big-comeback/52773388/1
  10. I think that credit should be given to the CovCath pitchers who were getting ground ball outs all day. Newport did not have a hit out of the infield until the fifth inning (although there were a few fly ball outs which obviously left the infield). Kudos to the Newport pitcher who kept the CovCath hitters off balance, and to the Newport fielders who made a number of impressive plays ( Newport was very strong up the middle -C, SS, 2B and CF).
  11. And you base that on what? Innings pitched? Wins? Strikeouts? ERA?
  12. Coach Wirth told me he was their starting tight end all year. Don't know why, but I don't think they threw much to him, though.
  13. Hard to tell a college football coach that a 6'3" or 6'4" 205 pounder who runs a 4.8 forty can't play college tight end. I understand Hanover's upper classman tight end was one of the top receivers in their conference last year. Not a bad fit.....
  14. Saw in the baseball thread that Adam Shumate committed to Hanover. He was also recruited to play football. Will he be a two-sport athlete in college?
  15. If I am not mistaken, last year four teams (2 east, 2 west) made it to the freshman playoffs. Even though CovCath and Highlands were in the same division, they both won their first round playoff games, so they played against each other in the championship game. Not sure if it is the same set up this year.
  16. What Freshman and JV results tell you is what kind of talent you have coming into a program. What that program does with that talent is what translates into success or lack of success at the Varsity level. The successful programs are those which get the most out of the talent they are given.
  17. CovCath has had four straight excellent Freshman teams. When the current Seniors were Freshmen, they tied Highlands for the best record in their division (losing to HHS 7-6 on a last-second play). They didn't get to compete in the Freshman championship game that year because they lost a coin flip to Highlands. When this CCH Senior class played Highlands in JV as Sophmores, they blew Highlands out. The current Juniors also had an excellent Freshman team (again losing a close one with Highlands). This year's CCH Sophomores had a similar story - losing in OT to Highlands in the regular season and losing a close game with Highlands in the Freshman championship game.
  18. You will not meet a finer man than TOG. He is a great example to those young men, giving good advice to them that goes far beyond the baseball diamond. It is good to see him recognized for his positive influence and his contributions to high school baseball.
  19. This post is wrong on all counts. At the risk of stealing TOG's thunder, I'll try to provide a recap: Warning had pitched a fantastic game going into the 6th with CCH leading 3 - 0. HC got hot in the 6th and started hitting the ball pretty well. When Warning left the game, HC had scored 4 runs and had two runners on base (1st and 3rd) with only one out. Shumate came in and got the first batter to hit the ball to the shortstop. The shortstop bobbled the ball and was unable to turn the double play, so he settled on getting the out at first. The HC runner who was on third scored on the play and the runner who was on first attempted to go to third on the throw from the shortstop to first. The throw from the first baseman to the third baseman beat the runner to the bag, but he was safe (from where I was sitting, I couldn't tell if the the throw was off line or if it was dropped). The next batter walked after a 3 - 2 battle (several fouls), and the runner on third scored on a passed ball/wild pitch (couldn't see which). The final HC batter of the inning grounded out for the 3rd out. Shumate's line for the inning: no hits, no runs, one walk, three batters faced, two batters retired. Michael Hellman pitched the 7th and did a great job, retiring all 3 batters he faced.
  20. Congrats, Indians. First regional appearance in several years?
