PARK HILLS – Adam Shumate was not on the mound for his head coach’s 800th career win, but the Covington Catholic High School senior was proud to be a part of it.

Shumate, a senior pitcher for the Colonels, will have more years of potential wins in front of him after signing to play for Hanover College May 9.

 

Hanover is an NCAA Division III school in Indiana.

“It’s a great school with great coaches,” said Shumate, of Fort Mitchell. “They have a very nice facility and great academics.”

Shumate is 5-2 with 49 strikeouts in 48 innings this year for the Colonels. The 49 strikeouts leads Northern Kentucky.

“He pitches our big games,” said CCH head coach Bill Krumpelbeck. “He throws hard. He’ll be our guy when we go into the tournament. We’ll have to ride on his back and see how far we can go. We’re a young club so we look to Adam for leadership as well.”

 

Shumate is part of a young Cov Cath squad with a lot of juniors.

 

“I’ve been doing my best trying to get my team wins in big games,” he said. “We’ve been working well together and playing very good ball. We don’t have that many seniors, but the seniors we do have are all great leaders and we contribute the best we can.”

 

Shumate did not start May 6 against Highlands, a 15-7 win which became the 800th for Krumpelbeck. It was the 18th win of the season for Cov Cath, who is 19-8 through May 11.

“It’s a great thing,” Shumate said. “He’s been a great coach for a lot of years the way he really helps out pitchers. He’s a pitching coach and he’s great the way he teaches the basics.”

 

Krumpelbeck, the fourth-leading active coach on the state wins list entering the season, said 800 is just a number.

“That just comes when you’ve been around a long time,” he said. “I’ve been lucky to have some good assistants. Tom Eckerle and John Michels have been with me for 15 years. Those guys work as hard as I do.”

 

 

The Colonels are looking to win 20 games or more for the 25th straight year in Krumpelbeck’s tenure. The earliest they can do that is May 13 at Dixie Heights.

Jake Lankheit leads the team in hitting at .475 through 59 at-bats, adding two home runs and 23 RBI. Grant Schreiver (.442), Matt Rolf (.414) and Brady Reese (.411) are also over .400.

Then again Maile only allowed LexCath 4 runs in 5.2 innings of pitching then threw 5.1 innings of 8 hit but only 2 runs vs. Beechwood in earning the victory could be the #1.

 

Then again other than the LexCath game Michael Hellman has pitched and defeated with a complete game over ALL "A" Champions Christian Academy Louisville @ CAL and threw another gem vs. Cooper in another complete game victory.
