Saw in the baseball thread that Adam Shumate committed to Hanover. He was also recruited to play football. Will he be a two-sport athlete in college?

Football isn't his game unless he's going to punt. He is a pitcher and that's what he should concentrate on year-round .

Hard to tell a college football coach that a 6'3" or 6'4" 205 pounder who runs a 4.8 forty can't play college tight end. I understand Hanover's upper classman tight end was one of the top receivers in their conference last year. Not a bad fit.....

What position did he play for CovCath this yr? TE?

I also find it hard to believe Dave Wirth couldn't find a spot on the field for a 6'4 205 4.8 guy.

He didn't get much PT. He punted after the other punter got hurt.

 

If he gave up baseball and worked full-time on getting stronger and faster and quicker he could have a chance to get some PT at Hanover.

God bless him if he wants to do it. It would hurt his baseball career at Hanover.

I would think at $38,000 a year at school with the academic challenges that Hanover presents, he will focus on his studies. Since Hanover is D3 they can only offer academic and need based aid and scholarships. So to maintain the academic scholarships you need to maintain a 3.0 or 3.2 depending upon the scholarship.

 

The time commitment for college football is immense, adding an equally demanding baseball schedule would be very daunting. I know there are those who have been able to do it, but they are quite the exception to the rule.

Good luck to Adam. Hanover's field is top notch and the other facilities are very, very nice. Additionally, he'll be getting a great degree.

Coach Wirth told me he was their starting tight end all year. Don't know why, but I don't think they threw much to him, though.

Coach Wirth is a smart coach so there must be a reason. He's not averse to using a TE as we saw the previous season with Geisen who contributed a lot. In addition he would probably prefer to get a bigger blocker on the outside than a small WR. We'll see him use TEs again as there are some good candidates in the hopper.

Congrats to Adams, He should of been use more but hey we seen how far they got and by the way if any body can play two sports I would bet on Adam.

I'm not doubting that he can be on two teams, but I watched Brett Dietz star in football and be used very sparingly in his time on the basketball and baseball teams. He was one of the better athletes that Hanover has ever had. It is very tough, even if it is DIII.
