  1. BG will once again challenge for a title. Owensboro and Christian will both be a tough challenge to even get there though..
  2. Always good to play a quality opponent in a scrimmage to help expose any weaknesses and adjust accordingly. The Tigers will be fine and a load to handle, especially come playoff time..
  3. Sounds like Male's going to be loaded this year. Them and Trinity should be a great game and those 2 are likely on a level of their own in 6a.
  4. Murray matches up with the Top 3, pretty much man for man, punch for punch. And, I don't think OB Catholic is too far behind, either.. They're a team that's going to put lots of points on the board with a great QB and WRs..
  5. They do occasionally get a transfer or 2, but, mainly kids from right there in town. Graves Co has had several kids transfer to Mayfield over the years, but, at the same time, they've lost some good kids who transferred to Graves. Goes both ways. I remember getting a couple of kids from Ballard one year, but, at the same time, we lost an all-state DE to Murray and the 2 from Ballard didn't nearly make up for that loss.
  6. This guy is just stirring the pot and not even a Mayfield fan unless they've changed their mascot from a Cardinal to an Eagle.
  7. 21-15 final.. All Varsity.. Neither JV team scored.. No kickoffs in the game as the other team would take over at there own 35 after a score. Everything else was just like a regular game. Milan got the ball 1st and had a huge pass play that went inside the Cards 10, but, it was called back for a hold and Mayfield held them to 1 1st down and then forced a punt. Mayfield took over inside there own 10 and Tragon Bright took the 1st play in for a score, only to be called back for a clip or hold, but, still got the ball out of there own endzone to about midfield, a couple of plays later, Arnett hooked up on a TD pass from about 35 yards out.. After a 3 and out for Milan, Mayfield got the ball back again and after a few plays, scored again to go up 14-0.. Milan put together a good drive and had the ball inside the Cards 20 when the Cards forced a fumble. Mayfield scored again to go p 21-0. Milan scored on its next possession and tried a fake PAT that was successful, 21-8 Mayfield. The Cards put together a couple of other drives that had them deep in Bulldog territory, but, once had a pick in the end zone and were turned away on downs on the other. Milan scored on a long pass play after the int to cut the lead to 21-15, but, were unable to get any closer.. I thought Mayfields D looked very good against the run, but, did give up some big pass plays. They've gone to a 3-4 front with 4 really good LBs that all swarm to the ball and they all tackle well. Very few missed tackles vs the run and while they did give up some passing yards, they had their moments where the coverage looked solid. Just need to get more consistent there. I thought the Cards looked sharp on offense.. Arnett is very accurate with his passes and makes good decisions when flushed from the pocket.. He's very mobile, as well.. I was very impressed with the RBs and WRs.. I knew Bright would get his, but, they're far from a one man show in the backfield. I thought 3 or 4 other RBs looked great, ran hard, hit the holes quickly and showed great balance and elusiveness and they're a little bigger in the backfield than what they've had in the past couple of years. They have 3 or 4 nice looking receivers. Again, you knew Kennemore was going to get his, but, they have other weapons as well that showed great hands and good route running ability. I thought the LT and LG were solid. The C had some trouble with a few snaps and didn't get much penetration against a good sized and athletic Milan front 4. The other 2 OL did an adequate job, but, will need to get better. Depth is an issue on the OL. They can't afford any injuries, as there's a big drop off after the 1st 5 or 6 kids. The kicking game will once again be solid as he was 4 for 4 on PATs and had a couple of nice punts.. Milan is a solid ball club. They dress a ton of kids, have some very athletic RBs and WRs, their QB can really zip the ball and they have good size in the trenches on both sides of the ball. They'll be a threat to make a deep 3a run in Tn this year. Overall, not a bad showing for the Cards at all, for a 1st scrimmage. After tonight, I'm optimistic about the season. If the OL can gel together and stay healthy and they can shore up in the secondary just a little, they're going to be very, very good team, who'll be tough to beat. I absolutely love the skill players on this team. Should be fun to watch all year..
  8. IMO, the verdicts still out on McCracken Co with a new coaching staff.. They'll definitely have some really nice athletes, led by Hughes and Cash Jones, who's a very good passing QB with some scrambling ability. I always thought Haskins put all his best players on the offensive side of the ball and kind of filled in his defense, which has always been their Achilles heal.. If the new coach puts his athletes on D or allows a few to go both ways, they could be really good..
  9. I was looking at the Tn HS FB site and the preview of Milan said they lost 19 srs from last years team, but, a lot of those Sr starters gave way to several sophomores by mid season and that this years Jr class has 30 kids, many with returning experience and that class is the one they have their best skill kids.. They're expecting a strong year this year, but, feel like next years team will be one of their best in a long time..
  10. The annual "You better look out for Covington Catholic this year" jabber.. What makes this year any different than the last 7 or 8? How many returning starters do they have? What did they lose? Do they have any incoming transfers? They may well be a team to look out for this year, but, it just seems like they have a lot of ground to make up to be in the same discussion with Highlands..
  11. That's what I said.. 2 different QBs from 13 and 14 teams.. Sizemore in 13 and Griffin in 14.. And, imo, Grifin was the better of the 2.. More mobile, more accurate, better runner and the WR corp was better..
  12. thats right.. regardless, they weren't the same QBs from both years..
  13. No, Olinger was the QB in 13 and he graduated. The WR from 13 moved to QB in 14 and he was just a better overall athlete than Olinger.
  14. I think the difference between 2013 and 2014 games vs Williamsburg was the Burgs QB, who was more versatile and had much better scrambling ability than the QB the year before. Plus, that Williamsburg team brought back 18 starters from the year before runner-up team, so, you have to figure they were a year older and stronger and experienced and the fact they were embarrassed the year before, so, they had a bad taste in their mouths. Add to that that last years Mayfield team as a whole was not quite as strong as the year before, especially on the defensive end, although they masked it pretty well during the season and really didn't face too many teams that had a very good passing game like the Jackets had. Now, as far as comparing the Cards and Colts, I thought the Colts looked much more impressive in B.Green than Mayfield did. But, in saying that, I think Williamsburg would have handled NCC, who was the beneficiary of a weak side of the bracket, but, were far from the juggernaut of some past Bred teams. They were barely a 500 team who Beechwood handled with ease, a team Mayfield beat on the road a week earlier in the semis.
  15. Murray is the beneficiary of a down Calloway Co program. They don't get a ton of their players, but, adding 2-3 good athletes a year gets you 6-9 kids who can play and provide some depth. Plus, the last Head Coach and the current one have upped their non-district schedule the past few years and that's helped them be better prepared for a playoff run. Even without these 2 factors, they always seem to have a quality line, a stud RB or 2 and several solid athletes. It'll be interesting to see if they'll open up the playbook some with the skill kids and QB they have or if they'll still play that ball control 3 yds and a cloud of dust type offense.
  16. Both teams always field a team with 4 or 5 really good athletes, but, when you are playing 15-20 kids, they're forced to play on both sides of the ball, on all the special teams and they can't sustain against deeper teams. If they merged and dressed 30-35 kids with those 10 or so really good athletes, they'd be a formidable 1a team. If they did merge, they may even draw a few extra kids that currently opt for S.Fulton, Tn and even a few kids from Hickman Co who doesn't have a FB team.
  17. 1) Trinity 2) Male 3) St X 4) Manual 5) Bowling Green 6) Highlands 7) Scott Co 8) Ballard 9) Desales 10) C.Hardin 11) Belfry 12) Mayfield 13) Pulaski Co 14) Henry Clay 15) Lex Catholic 16) Lafayette 17) Simon Kenton 18) Johnson Central 19) Boyle Co 20) CAL 21) Christian Co 22) Cov Catholic 23) Butler 24) Central 25) Anderson Co
  18. No way CAL is ahead of Meade Co, C.Hardin, Manual, Central, JHardin or Butler.. They are boarder line Top 15..
  19. 3A will have about 4 or 5 legit contenders when all's said and done.. Boyle Co, Lex Catholic, Central, Belfry with teams like PT, Corbin, Bell Co, ETown, Bardstown having a stronger than usual team on occasion.. Not sure 1A won't be the most competitive because I don't see that class having a dominant team year in and year out..
  20. In last 6 yrs, imo: 2009 - LCA was the best team w/o question. Hazard may have been 2nd best. Both from the east. 2010 - Hazard and Beechwood were pretty even that year. 2011 - Hazard won it all, so, I'd have to give then the edge, although Beechwood was very good that year. 2012 - Fairview and Beechwood were pretty even. The game vs Mayfield gave Fairview a black eye that year but they were a great power team all year. 2013 - I think Frankfort would have beaten that Williamsburg team. 2014 - I'd give Williamsburg a slight nod over Beechwood, but, it would have been close.
  21. I think 4 out of 5 years, Russellville should represent Region 1 in the Final 4, but, there will likely be a Crittenden team or KCD, Holy Cross or someone else that will have that great year from time to time and knock them off. Russellville will likely be an underdog to either Beechwood /Frankfort in most years, but, they'll have those special years where they have the line play to go along with the speedy athletic guys and when they do, they'll be a load for any 1a team to knock them off..
  22. What I'm looking forward to is to see how Beechwood, Frankfort or Russellville will match up with winner of the east. The last 6 years that Mayfield has represented the west, all I've heard is how Beechwood, Russellville or Frankfort was better than the team played in the championship. Well, now, these teams will get that shot to put up or shut up.. Personally, I think there was a couple of years that Beechwood was the next best team, but, imo, the other 4 years they weren't.
  23. I'm not quite ready to proclaim Hopkinsville a Top 10 team.. I think W.Central or F.Simpson either should be ahead of them.. I think Caldwell will be better than most are counting on and I do expect them to beat out PT for the 3a district title. Christian Co will be outstanding on the offensive end, but, the question will be, can they keep other teams from scoring 40 a game? It may not be a popular opinion, but, I expect O'boro Red Devils to unseat BG in the 5a Region finals this year..
  24. Maybe NCCs team was better in 2013 than they were in 2014 and that's why they hung better with Desales.. also, maybe the fact that the 2013 Desales team was there 1st title team and they're usually harder than the 2nd. More pressure and still some doubt.
  25. WVerona will be a player in the east and I expect LCA to be back to there old form and get back in the title discussion. Murray and OB Catholic will both be strong and give Mayfield a challenge in the region.
